^ If any of you change your mind, let me know. Also, it's never too late to get your name down for one of these (well, obviously it is after you've all been paired up), and it'd be cool to have another larger-scale trade, so just tell me if you fancy the idea. Don't forget, this one's gonna be officially-released compilation-themed.

I guess I'll kick it off anytime between tomorrow and the weekend. Let's say Thursday at the earliest.

YEAH WELL RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN.

BlueCadet sent me Dah Shinin' by Smif-N-Wessun. It's a good old East Coast Gangsta Rap album made up by some dudes from Brooklyn. The beats are the good old Biggie or NaS style kind, blastin bass and having an old school feel (expected since they are old school). They're very simple also. The MC's have great flow, very familiar with the era of rap it's coming from. I enjoyed this album, it's good to kick back to. I wouldn't say it's trying anything too daring, but they're making some good music. If you're looking for some classic Gansta Rap, this is an album to look for. I guarantee it.

I like a wide variety of stuff...but for the purpose of the trading post, I try to cater my offerings to the person I'm sending it too. I don't want to just send something random that could be way too far out of the other person's comfort zone, so I try to figure out what from my collection they might like, based on what they already like. :) I don't want to recommend something too similar, either, as in more of the same, but the goal is for the other person to like it, not be scared by it.

I haven't gotten around to listening to Beirut yet...will post when I do.

Alfred sent me this and well... just really wasn't for me. The song writing was sub par which I found kind of interesting seeing as how he's the son of Bob Dylan, but I guess talent may skip a generation. I'm being a little overly harsh, the guitar parts were pretty well conceived but they quickly became repetitive and never really built up on anything. One song in particular just sounded like a Two Cow Garage song but with the edges filed down and declawed. I guess my biggest complaint was that it just sounded too safe, one of the things I've found as I dig deeper with the Gothic Americana is that the songs have this haunting tendency about them leaving you feeling kind of nervous, like you're not sure if you should really be enjoying the song, almost a guilt. Sorry Alfred, I just did not enjoy this album, however I can be hard to please at times, so don't let it get to you, I hope you enjoyed your album.

Just stopping by to say I'm gonna see if I can get the next trade started on Tuesday. Remeraber, there's a theme this time as well! Looser than the other themes we've had, but if you wanna join in you have to ask your swap partner for an album by an artist or of a genre you don't know much about at all. That doesn't mean send your partner an album he/she'll hate either! If you can't manage to adhere to that theme, just send along any old album as per norm.

To recap, here's who's up for it so far...

And, again, it's not too late to join the party if you want to.

It would be a little tough to pull off. I can be done though, I may have to go download one to share haha. In any case I'm good with what the majority of the sharing group wants.

Edit: I just checked and I have a total of 6 EPs, 2 live, 1 Studio and 3 really old Demo ones that might be a tough listen for some. But I wouldn't mind doing that theme.

Just sent you some options (I didn't want to up an album you already heard), but choose carefully. All of them are really close to my heart and brilliant albums in my opinion. Although most of them might unfortunately take a couple spins. I really hope you enjoy!

King Geedorah—Take Me To Your Leader
FaSho sent me this DOOM side project a couple days ago. It took me a little while to post my reaction here because I wanted to give it a few spins before I posted anything about it. At first listen I have to admit I wasn't all that excited by it. I mean, I didn't dislike it or anything but it just seemed like a typical DOOM project that wasn't very distinct from a lot of his other stuff. I'm on my fourth or fifth listen now though and I have to say the album has really grown on me. I had planned on just giving it two or three spins before I wrote anything about it so the fact that I've gone beyond that says to me that this album is probably going to keep growing on me. My favorite tracks are "Krazy World", "The Final Hour" and "The Fine Print", which has just about the best beat of any DOOM song I can think of. Good stuff FaSho!

Right, let's get this thing moving again eh. Next trade's gonna start this weekend - who's in?

From what I've got so far, it's gonna be me, Mr. Unchained Ballad and NumeroNuevoDream. If either of you are having second thoughts, feel free to let me know :)

And before I forget, this one's from Anteater...

Jade Warrior - Last Autumn's Dream

I'd be lying if I said I listened to prog at all regularly. In fact, the closest thing I have to a prog album that I've listened to more than a handful of times is 10cc's Original Soundtrack. Nothing against the genre as a whole - it's just neither something I know a lot about nor something you'll catch me going out of my way to listen to. There are, after all, a few such albums I kinda like. The point is that in listening to this album that Anteater was kind enough to send my way, I was seeing it from the whole outside-looking-in perspective. Overall, I thought it was definitely worth the download, but not quite something I found consistently enjoyable.

Before I get into all that though, I'd best tell you exactly what kind of album folder I found staring me in the face upon downloading. 'Eclectic prog' was the tag the MP3s came with, and I suppose it's an appropriate one. As I said, I'm no expert here by any stretch of the imagination, but I can certainly say that there isn't one unifying sound to this album - much more a juxtaposition of slower folk, psychedelic and hard-rock to these ears, all the while united by the lead singer's fairly distinct, smooth vocal style. It seems to me like something that'll take more than the one listen to truly digest, wich is (partly) why it took me this long to get a review down.

As for what I thought of it, coming to it as someone who has virtually no prog to call his own, it was always gonna be a fairly difficult listen. That said, the only real weak point for me was Snake - the heaviest part of the album by quite a stretch, and just sounded a little cheesy to these ears. As far as the more up-tempo moments go, I liked the Demon Trucker a lot, even if it sounRAB like the band wrote it as a bit of a throwaway nuraber; a moment of light relief. The slower, more folk and psychedelia-tinged parts of the album were what made it a winner for me though - the picturesque and finely textured Winter's Tale and Lady Of the Lake in particular. The absolute peak moment of the album for me comes three songs in, that being the monolithic, slow-rolling instrumental Dark River, set nicely against an interesting, almost polyrhythmic backdrop.

Of all the prog I've heard then, I can say that this is one of the ones that's made the best impession on me as a unit of work. One or two parts of it weren't really to my tastes, but there are a few terrific tracks on this album that I'd recommend to anyone. So, yeah, cheers for this one Mr. Anteater sir  I imagine this one'll get that little bit sweeter from repeated listens too. Sorry it's taken me so long to say this as well.

Didn't the wall sell more copies than Dark Side Of The Moon?
I wanna say it's the fifth best seeling album of all time, or maybe just in the US.

FaSho sent me:

morrissey-years-of-refusal.jpg

This was a couple of weeks ago, and I've been fairly busy, for some reason not having reviewed this.

The album has become my theme music, I swear. I listen to it everywhere I go and there are at least two songs on everyone of my playlists, now.

That being said, my nuraber one song on this album has to be "Black Cloud."

Overall, I would rate it a 4 out of 5.

Is there anything else I should have added?

Good lass :thurab:

I've got a lot on my plate for the next few days, so the idea is to start the next one on Wednesday. Can't be bothered to think of a theme, so I think I'll just leave it unthemed, unless I come up with some brilliant idea for it in the near future.
