We have a problem with our 1992 Honda Accord- the fan comes on automatically- why?

We own a 92 Accord. It's a great car.

Recently, we had the a/c recharged. There is a minor coolant leak somewhere. But it's not anything major.

I know that during the summer months, cars tend to overheat more. Why is that? Is it because of greater usage of the air conditioner in the cars? Is it because of the hotter temperatures in the air itself?

Up until a couple of weeks ago, the electric fan never came on when the car was not running. But ever since we got the a/c recharged, whenever we drive the car, after we stop and turn off the ignition, it often cuts on the fan. I didn't realize that the fan could cut on with the car not running. Why does it do this?

By the way, the water pump is brand new on the engine. I have noticed that the coolant temperatures have been slightly elevated, especially after driving long distances. I pay attention to the temp guage. But thus far, we have not had any problems with the engine overheating. It just concerns me that the fan has been cutting on even after I take the key out of the ignition.

Take it to a RADIATOR SHOP and have it checked. Summer temps. should not make car run hot. The fan is an electrical problem and can be fixed at shop when getting rad. fixed

I'd be wondering if the anti-freeze is worn out or not mixed probably and I'd be checking it with a proper anti-freeze tester that you can buy for around 7 bucks or so at walmart etc.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way the fan is engaging due to the engine being quite hot and yes outside temperatures affect the engines running temperature and especially if it's hot out and you're running the A/C system. Also many think that the anti-freeze is only for the winter months but the anti-freeze is also for the hot temperatures and you shouldn't mix the anti-freeze with regular tap water you should mix it with distilled water and don't mix it more then 50/50 ever. If you've not changed the coolant in sometime or since you've owned the vehicle I'd change it and start from there.
