Very scary horror films

Oh and drag me to hell aswell... really scared after i watched it everytime i went up the stairs i had to run and check ganush wernt following me!!

I tried to watch this three times and it freaked me out. I always got as far as the first sighting of 'it' and turned it off. Eventually watched it all and have to agree it is quite scary.

I tend to love gory slasher films but hate psychological horrors. :(

Has anyone seen "Freakshow" (2007)?
It's a remake of the 1932 Todd Browning film "Freaks".
The things they do to the woman at the end of the film !

The whole film is frightening.. but yeah the end is...

But seriously its all about the noises.. the little creeks etc in that film, must have full attention and silence! :D

How come nobody has mentioned "Inside" - AKA - "a l'interieur"?
It's a very very good film and had me on the edge of my seet...it's not only scary but extremely violent and gory.

Here's the plot summary for those who don't know what it's about:
Four months before Christmas, Sarah and Matthieu Scarangelo were in a car crash, of which Sarah and her unborn baby were the only survivors. On Christmas Eve, Sarah stays home alone, where she grieves her husband and prepares to go to the hospital the next morning for the delivery. As night falls, a woman knocks on Sarah's door asking to use the phone. When she refuses, the woman reveals that she knows Sarah and tries to force her way in. Sarah calls the police; they inspect the home and determine the woman has left, but promise to keep watch over Sarah through the night. The woman returns and tries to take Sarah's unborn child, but Sarah locks herself in the bathroom. The strange woman torments Sarah through the night and kills all who try help her.

I have to agree with other posters when they mention the Changeling. OH got it by accident - he wanted to see the Angelina Jolie film - the Changeling - last time he was sent out to get the film :-) It was made in the early eighties and one of the best ghost stories I have seen.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but another ghost story I really enjoyed was "Ghost Story". It was Fred Astaire's last movie and an absolute gem. No gore or anything like that but simple and atmospheric (imo).

I loved the Exorcist 3 - fabulous film. I saw the Exorcist (1973 edition) when I was 14 and was terrified. Still scares me now but I don't think it would appeal to the younger viewers as even though I thought it was terrifying I think the are more "in the know" these days and it may not have aged very well.

Horror movies are very subjective. There are factors involved that affect how you view them... the age you were when you saw them, the environment (cinema or with lairy mates), and the genre of the horror film. Here's my 'expert' viewpoint on some of my faves...

(not in order of scariness or quality...)

REC - (handheld documentary style).. Brilliantly excecuted and totally non-Hollywood. No music, no heavily flagged shocks... just pure terror... and a final 15 mins of utter horror.

The Exorcist - (demonic possesion)... Done to death by so many inferior films, so often seen by today's teens as a bit of a joke. I find it chilling in the way the events are presented very matter of fact... disgusting, but great, effects too. Even a horrifying subliminal image to make you crap yourself.

Hostel - (torture porn)... Interesting story (quite believeable!)... but one for the gore-fans only. Quite stomach churning.

The Descent - (subterranean horrors)... Hard to watch because they are all lit by torches, but utterly claustrophobic, great all-female cast and some really horrible "things!"

The Legend of Hell House - (haunted house)... Quite scientific and interesting, with a creeepy score by Delia Derbyshire. Some utterly terrifying set pieces.

Paranormal Activity - (demonic possession)... A new entry which scared the hell out of me. Simple, effective and well shot.

and finally.... the piece de resistance....

The Haunting - (haunted house)... It has dated a bit now (made in 1963), but this black and white gem has some great performances and scary scenes using only sound and lighting to convey the horror.

Just a few, but I cannot express strongly enough how important sound is to a horror film. If you have a surround system, USE IT. If not, make sure the sound isn't too quiet.

Hope this helps :)))

Yes I did! That was exactly what it was meant to be, if you read the reviews it's not meant to be taken seriously. I thought it was really funny and not that scary at all.

Maybe, but if you had all the lights off and the volume loud that would help...

That bit after shes dead and she falls on the girl and all that dead body gunk comes out of her mouth.... So rank.

"Scared" is a state of mind. As such it can, if you want it to, be controlled by the conscious mind, thus ultimately making nothing scary. However, if you want it to scare you, or you're sufficiently weak-willed, then potentially anything and everything can scare you.

Ring (1996) if you can cope with subtitles, this Japanese horror is one of the scariest films I have ever seen. Not just during, but really plays on your mind when the lights go out. Don't get The Ring (2002) which is a below par american remake.

A surprise one for me was The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Again, another one that played on my mind afterwarRAB and gave me a couple of nightmares.
