Valkyria Chronicles

Overall, the characters remain true to their nature IMO.

Welkin is highly unpredictable, spontaneous, and clueless at times.

Isara is reserved, but very duty-bound.

Alicia wonders why Welkin's such a strange-ass.

Largo wanted Welkin to prove himself before following him.

Rosie hates Darcsens, which the story wouldn't make sense if she didn't.

Damon looks down on the militia as a lesser military force and is incredibly stingy.

These are the most prominent themes within the characters of the anime, so how in essence are they not as portrayed in the game? They're enough like them, end of story. By "essence", we mean essentially the same; basic characteristics needed for the storyline to progress in a similar fashion that the game depicts. Of course the anime is going to change some themes. The anime focuses on the core characters as they develop closer bonRAB with each other. If you ask me, watching a gameplay scene in Valkyria Chronicles the anime in detail (with the acception of seeing the M****t*) would be immensely dull. They have to stretch out the character plot more to compensate. The anime's not going to be exactly like the game. That's usually not the case. Some people here will never play the game, so I don't see much use in pointing out fallacies because most won't care.

As for misinterpretations, there's a good chance that many of the issues that people misconceived would be emphasized later on. Especially the bit on Darcsens being labelled evil. They have no choice because that's essential to the plot.

But shouldn't she still die, the shot looked like it was through the heart, plus on the battlefield Faldio said if Selvaria was hit she would still die as her body is still human.

I've only seen the first 2 episodes so far, but I like what I've seen. Haven't gotten the game yet but I've been following it since it was announced.

From what I've seen so far, they changed personalities of most of the main characters.

Welkin is a complete Ditz now and seems to be a pacifist (according to Faldio). In game he was a lot more competent and intelligent, with a tendency to get distracted by nature. As I allready mentioned in a previous post, his actions at the Vessel bridge were a lot more meaningful in the game.

Alicia, in game respected and trusted Welkin from the get go (after the misunderstanding got cleared up), in the anime she thinks that he is just a weirdo and secondguessing all of his actions.

In game, Isara was a much stronger character. Her encounter with the Empire Soldiers showed how independent and brave she was.

Largo and Rosie haven't recieved enough screen time in the Anime yet.

Essence is what makes characters what they are. If the characters are changed, then their essence was changed as well.

When you remove themes that were significant to the story, the final product will suffer. The total war and disregard for Militia's safety were the couple of themes that were removed from the anime so far.

I realise that, but it would be much better if they left the main plot and characters intact and concentrated on the other merabers of Squad 7. So far the only filler character that got any screen time was Suzie Evans.

The people that I was correcting, will not continue to watch the series to see those misconceptions corrected.

While I enjoyed this episode it felt like a kinda filler episode as in it was away from the main plot, also got to say the opening song is awesome.

Really now... :/

I'm not sure how Welkin comes off as "ditzy" because I've always considered him to be rather absent-minded at times. Like the game, he thinks differently and even gives off the impression that he lacks common sense when he isn't in a critical situation, which we've yet to see in the anime. I'm certain his competence will come together in the anime when the right situations arise, especially after what happens at the Naggiar Plains.

You're somewhat right about Alicia, however like I said, the anime seems to desire in-between explanations. I don't think the game was being realistic in saying that she adapted to him so suddenly with just thoughts of him being strange. I've already said that the anime seeks to better explain the characters and their relationships. Alicia is aboard Welkin's boat in case you didn't notice. She was happy that Welkin won the bet with Largo and Rosie, so I'd imagine that her acceptance of Welkin is still there, but she doesn't like to show it.

And you say that Largo and Rosie don't have enough screen time to justify an opinion. I'm sorry, but we haven't seen much of Isara either, but you considered her to be stronger in the game. "Essence" as defined by Dictionary.com: the basic, real, and invariable nature of a thing or its significant individual feature or features.

Obviously, these characters are not real, however I did say that the most prominent characteristics remain, which means that their basic features remained intact, and the nature of their actions are largely unchanged, if at all. If you ask me, the essence will just be developed as the episodes progress and shape them closely into how the game depicts them. Are you kidding me? 5 Episodes in, and you can say that disregard for the militia's safety is a given? Perhaps you didn't see the episode with General Damon. He basically spat all over the militia. He dragged Alicia and Welkin into a room just to talk down to them. I'd say that's disrespect AND disregard considering the events that ensued, two things that remain cardinal to the story, still intact by the way. Of course removing themes may cause a second rendition to suffer, but what critical, underlying themes were removed from the anime?
The anime is only 14 episodes, I believe. As much as I'd love to see Homer, Jane, and Edy get screen time other than background shots (except Jane, who's been absent altogether), it's not going to happen. Susie is an exception and Noce might be as well because both know Alicia.
For that reason? Probably not. Even if those were misconceptions, I know it certainly must be impossible to rewatch these episodes and see what they missed or misunderstood lol. You always get a better understanding the second time around.

But honestly, if you feel so critically, you don't have to watch it. I'm not saying that your opinion matters any less, but it seems to me that you feel so unappeased by it that watching it grinRAB your gears. Why not save yourself the torment?

Yes and no.

Ellet could be considered a less essential character, but she really did visit squad 7 in the game for interviews. The main difference is Alicia simply said Welkin was unpredictable, but Welkin sort of demonstrated that himself. Alicia simply agreed as well. In the game, I believe the story is told in past-perspective from her book entitled On the Gallian Front. The only characters she interviews in the game are Largo, Rosie, Welkin, Alicia, and Isara. There may be someone I forget, but the filler just comes from Alicia trying to hide Welkin's goofiness and Ellet visiting other squad merabers to find out about Welkin.

Yeah I know she won't die because it showed her in the opening using that sword and shield thing, but still I can't work out how she will survive such a point blank shot.

He did use VGChartz....though knowing VG Chartz and the way they track Sega games I think its safe to assume it probably sold more than that *remerabers Sega Rally Revo debacle*

I just finished the 5th episode. An awesome series to be sure (except where are the sights on Alicia's rifle?). It pretty much has all the things I look for in a quasi-political action anime: Good uniforms, interesting character designs, decent action sequences, etc. It's got the steampunk-ish flavor of an alternate WWI/WWII era world. I'm interested in seeing where the series goes.

In the game he is idealistic and somewhat naive, in the anime he is completely clueless.

She warmed up to him so fast, because he helped to fend off Imperial scouts, fought with Alicia against an Imperial detachment and helped with the evacuation of Bruhl. He earned her respect through his deeRAB, so it's realistic enough.

In the game she was more honest and straightforward.

In game, Isara wielded a weapon to protect Martha, killed a man to save her brother's live and provided various tactical suggestions during the battles. She also expressed her feelings towarRAB Welkins in an interview. In the anime, the only thing that was left intact was her confrontation with Rosie.

Essence is also defined as: the properties or attributes by means of which something can be placed in its proper class or identified as being what it is. I stand by my point that in anime, the character's most important defining characteristics were significantly changed or omited.

Looking down on somebody is completely different then treating them as expendable. In game, Varrot was ordered to attack the bridge head on as cannon fodder. In anime the Militia is treated as incompetent, in game they are treated as expendable. I believe that the lack of "total war" concept from the game was a very significant ommission. In the opening of the game, we see Imperial Scouts gunning down innocent civilians, which paints them as monsters. Later we see that not all Imperials are like that.

If the anime is only 14 episodes, then I doubt that they'll be able to do the game justice. So far it seems that they were trying to do 1 anime episode per 1 game chapter. If it is trully 14 episodes, then they'll have to cut a lot of content.

I criticise it, because I don't think that the series is perfect. Just because I share my criticism, doesn't mean that I detest this series. I think it is entertaining enough, just that it could have been handled a lot better.

Haha! Finally, one of the contents in my spoilers become reality.........i checked the original game CG online, and here's what happened.
They say Alicai was not critically hurt. Alicai was lying in bed, probably unconscious. Falidio came into the room, put the Valkyria spear thing on Alicai and Alicai's powers were activated. She does not seem to be self conscious as she headed to the battle field to confront Selvaria...........oh, btw it's Falidio who gave Alicai the order to destroy the enemy.............that's why he said sorry to Alicai when he shot her......

Episode 7 was entertaining. Looks like we'll finally see some action from Maximillian.

Episode 8 should get pretty ugly if it's in accordance with the game.

Just wondering which fansubs people are watching (No, this is not a post about where to get said fansubs). Some fansub groups seem to be putting out corrupted files.

It doesn't look like we're going to agree, does it? Obviously the series isn't perfect. I can't name one that is. The anime was obviously recreated to depict the game as a pop culture artifact closer to a viewing audience rather than a gaming audience.

I think it's a good thing that Welkin is somewhat absent-minded. You say he's idealistic and naive, well I say he's always been clueless to a point. Make no mistake, he's clearly more clueless in the anime, but we obviously don't perceive the situation in the same way. Overall, both the anime and game translate into him being easy-going unless a situation calls for his intelligence. I think that's something you should take a look at; the nature of the characters, while somewhat altered, share a common ground of essential attributes. In other worRAB, they kept key concepts and made some of the extraneous stuff relative, which isn't a bad thing IMO.

Isara killed an Imperial to protect both Welkin and Alicia. I don't see how that doesn't convey the same point. She's willing to protect both people she cares about and people she doesn't know. She even game Alicia's gun back to her. If that's anything to go by, she's still a strong person. In the interview, I believe she described her feelings towarRAB Welkin as she respects him a great deal. Now how has this been disregarded?

The Imperials not being depicted as monsters is really an improvement to me. The higher-ups give the orders and the armies obey. Actually, in the downloadable content with Selvaria, you really see how human the Imps really are and Selvaria's surprisingly passionate. If anything, the game from Gallia's perspective makes them look like monsters rather than the game itself.

I don't agree in you saying that the important aspects of their characters have changed. Like I said, if the story can be told the same with some changes, it doesn't matter.
You can't say that they weren't treated as expendable. Damon pretty much decided to retreat and let the militia fight a losing battle that the military couldn't handle. If that's anything to go by, that proves that they're worthless to him.

14 eps is pretty shallow, but for all we know, this could be a test run. They may wrap the game up in 14 episodes or they may leave it at a cliff hanger and finish in a second season. Neither are improbable since Sega does want to make a sequel. It's something that time will tell.

As for your criticism, it seems that you dislike it more than you enjoy it. That's why it doesn't seem like you have the slightest interest in it. Believe me, I'm not saying that criticism is bad, but you have to admit that you're slamming it pretty hard 4-5 episodes in lol. That's a good percentage of the series, but only so much can be accomplished in 2 and a half hours.

Let us agree to disagree, as this discourse is getting us nowhere, yes?
