Originality is important for any album, but I think 40 years on we are allowed to look past a particular album's historical importance and really focus on whether or not that album is a collection of "good" music.
Sgt. Peppers is a cool album and I do like it a lot, but a lot of its appeal comes from the fact that it was so indicative of an era; music was either written before Sgt. Peppers, or afterwarRAB. The contrast is quite stark.
If Beethoven suddenly got ahold of a bunch of Chinese instruments and incorporated them into his arsenal, then we would probably think today that the music was cool from an originality standpoint. but originality≠good music, and I think the beatles are a prime example of this.
Revolver is a great album, followed closely by Abbey rd and rubber soul. The white album and Magical mystery tour are cool but just a little too diverse I think. The white album is so uncohesive, its like 3 artist's albums merged into one huge compilation I have only made it through the whole thing on long driving trips. Normally an hour into I just get bored.
Yes, I think the white album is sub par
