Unpopular Music Opinions

Elliott*

Actually he was pretty popular before he offed himself, miss misery anyone? Plus no sh*t, it happens with any musician who dies even if they don't off themselves.

As for being an overrated Nick Drake i've yet to see where the comparison comes from and no one explains it to me. i've listened to Nick Drake's stuff and the only similarties i've seen is between Pink Moon and Roman Candle/Self-Titled and I wouldn't consider that a rip off seeing the similarty is something thats common through out the whole singer/songwriter genre which is the albums are acoustic.

Elliotts extremely talented, people don't appreciated his music enough. In addition to have one of the most pretty voices ever he was an excellent musician who was good at quite at all the instruments he played, and I have respect for someone if they play more then just guitar. Which he was also really good a, memory lane, angeles, and so on. He was a brilliant producer and arranged everything very well. I don't see how people can consider him a typical songwriter and listen to Figure 8 or XO.

While I love Bowie and think Queen is a damn fine band, I've never been as fond of "Under Pressure" as most people are. What I'm more concerned about is that you think Vanilla Ice's songs have any validity. Much more troubling.

I think Imagine and Plastic Ono Band are classic album, All Things Must Pass would've been good if it wasn't such a bloated mess.. Despite the songwriting, I'm just commenting on it as a finished article. As a full body of work it isn't very good.

I'm afraid The Beatles I have a big soft spot for is a bit cack on his own. I've never enjoyed a McCartney solo album. :(

:thurab:

Really overrated, though I'm starting to like Floyd a little more.. If only a little

I love me some Queen but EVERYONE has one big named band with a devoted fanbase that they just don't like.. No point in getting all uppity about it, it's just the way it is.

Listening to Child In Time by Deep Purple earlier today it suddenly struck me that Iron Maiden ripped off Approx 95% of all their ideas from this one song.

The gig was one of the best I'd been to in awhile The National/Modest Mouse/REM all we're amazing I think it's the most consistent gig I've been to. Marr just made comments about 'rather be in America (the show was in Vancouver, Canada)' and just acting like a prick towarRAB the crowd with his generic random name-calling. He has a pretty bad personality.

Anyway reading the last few pages of this thread we're like slamming my head into a window on purpose.

I share your unpopular opinion. I think most people that like them aren't that experienced with electronic music. Otherwise they'd recognize that their sound is nothing special. At least that's the impression I got when I listened to one of their albums...I'd heard it all before, it just sounded more polished and packaged for the masses. More pop. People like pop, so there you go. I guess that's the big deal...it's easily accessible.

I didn't say they stole from the underground, this is about influence. They took on and adapted both obscure and popular styles of the times. As for their roots being in the 40s and 50s, by that I'm referring to their focus on melody and song. So basically, putting the two claims together, I'm saying that they took the new emerging styles of the 60s but with the twist of putting them into their own retro pop format.

About being able to erase them from history, I say that because if you look at the music that came in the next decade and onwarRAB, for the most part it has its roots in the 60s but very rarely seems to owe much to the Beatles. At least I don't see how it would, anyway. I haven't heard all that much from the 70s that really sounRAB like it's descended from the Beatles. But plenty that sounRAB like it has descended from a lot of the other popular banRAB of the era.

Im not attacking here, but I would like to know why you describe them as sub par, he was no pop singer, but most rock singers aren't. I'm trying to get to the heart of the issue because to me, Rage was one of a handful of banRAB in the 90's who weren't doing the same thing everyone else was...until everyone else followed them in the late 90's.

Yes, the Hottopic-core idiots love him and buy t-shirts with his face on it but that doesn't make him any worse of a mucisian.
If you like grunge and hate Nirvana, you're just being a tool.

lol what? who are you even talking to?

EDIT: Oh, are you talking about the Elliott Nick thing? If so...

Calling him emo is pretty stupid, seeing as Smith is about as emo as Drake, which isn't emo at all. You've displayed your musical ignorance in that post, emo is a branch off of the 80s hardcore movement. Has nothing to do with myspace or cutting yourself, emo is Circle Takes The Square, Educate yourself, theres an education thread in the emo forum.

Elliotts music being shitty? He was a fantastic vocalist and songwriter, and one of the best acoustic guitar players i've ever heard (see: Memory Lane, Angeles). He arranged stuff beautifully and was a phenomenal producer, just listen to Figure 8 to see that even if the album does have some weak points his talent is still very apparent.

Congrats, you don't know much about music.

For me, only The Fall are better than Wire when it comes to post punk.

That said, I entirely disagree with your opinion about Entertainment, Urban. To me it's one of the freshest and most rewarding post punk albums, and I think Gang of Four's sound is anything but a borefest - they really did master their style, like boo boo said. Obviously it's a style you aren't into, but the album is top notch in my opinion (as is Solid Gold).

Take it you won`t be buying this then......
