Unexplained shoulder pain

There's a huge pain in my right shoulder that comes and goes at different times. It doesn't seem to be a muscle that is near the surface, as I can't massage it and feel the pain that way. It happens sometimes when I simply move my right arm. When it happens, it hurts so bad that it makes it impossible to do anything with it. It would be easy to attribute it to using it too much or lifting something heavy, but this whole thing started when I was doing the least strenuous activity of all---I was sitting in a chair and watching TV! The pain just started up and kept getting worse! I tried moving my arm to different positions, but it only got worse. Then it eventually got better at that time, but the pain has flared up again at different times and then it goes away.

My inability to tie the pain to a particular cause is kind of frustrating since it doesn't give me a direction in which to come up with a solution. Does anyone here know what could be causing this kind of pain?

What type of shoulder pain is this? Does it occur when you are making certain types of movements?

I had some unexplained shoulder pain about 1 1/2 years ago. For me, the pain was worse when I made movements at or above shoulder level. I also started developing bicep pain as things got worse. My diagnosis was a Shoulder Impingement with bursitis/ tendonitis. Turned out that my shoulder was subluxing (coming a bit out of socket) when I moved it and pinching the tendons between my arm and upper shoulder bone.

I will say that when I started having the problems, my doc said to ice it and take Tylenol. Ice and/or heat + an anti-inflamatory seems to be the first standard thing to try. My next treatment step was PT.

Actually, what I have sounds alot like what you describe. When I move my right arm across my chest to my left is when it hurts the most. And it does have a sort of "pinching" feeling too, like it is a tendon being pinched. Nothing in the bicep area though.

Do some research on Shoulder Impingement Syndrome. The pain with the upper movements is classic with that. If that is really what you have, then there is a good chance PT may help. Also, a Cortizone shot helped me. It was also diagnostic of the problem. Unfortunately, because of the subluxations I had that caused my impingement, the PT didn't work well so I ended up with arthroscopic surgery. Shoulder is doing fine now.
