Underage Nudity Being Shared On The Gnutella Network - Porn and Laws

Thank's for that Virtualcoder. Can you give us a link to the newspaper? If 20 guys in one county are getting arrested a month I'm wondering why its not being done everywhere. Maybe it soon will be. But as of now there is nothing going on in the Los Angeles area.

Thanks for that Peerless. Buy what? What is d00d (d zero zero d?)? Can the "a" in my example be discovered?

Even if you had the theoretical victim's computer, intact with everything the same
as when he had it, any IP address you got using it would still lead to you unless
you also tapped his internet connection and used it too. The ISP is who controls
the IP addresses, not the hardware in the computer, and your window of
opportunity would be pretty small depending on how often the ISP sets leases to
expire and how quickly your victim hooks up his next computer to the same
internet account.

Actually having the hardware could make it possible to impersonate the other guy
but you would have to use the same physical connection and do it before he
registers a replacement computer with the ISP. In other words, you would have to
get close enough to be caught in order to try it.

Ditto Australia, if you have kp on your computer you'll be charged with possession of kp; if anyone has uploaded it then you can add trafficking.

all things considered your worst fear should be the reaction of your significant other, if there is one...and that's if they are keeping track of what you are doing...

if the file is still listed as being there in your OS (i.e. you haven't deleted it yet) then some sort of data eraser set to overwrite the file multiple times should be OK for your situation....if you have already deleted it then defragging and then filling up your drive to the max should remove the data from 'easy' retrieval....

if this is a first time, one time, occurrence then forensic analysis of your HDD would prove that....

darin's boot and nuke is also available in .ISO format which can be put on a CD and booted from just like the floppy file...if you are that paranoid and want to follow that route then be aware that you do have a project for yourself...backing up all important data...doing the boot and nuke...then the reinstall of your OS...make sure to have ALL drivers available for use and install your chipset drivers just after you boot into the clean OS the first time then reboot and install other drivers...the chipset drivers are MotherBoard specific and tell it how to operate with the OS...

I would suggest that the first thing you do after getting basic drivers and such installed is to do a full update on the OS, then start installing the programs you wish...then upon completion of all the dirty work defrag the drive and go on with life....

ukbobboy01 said: "I would've thought that the FBI should be out catching terrorist and organised criminals rather than busting a kid, barely out of his teenage years, for downloading porn".

The FBI is no different than any other law enforcement organization. Their agents are promoted and slapped on the back for one thing and one thing only. Arrests. If they can arrest some 16 year old kid for looking at a naked 17 year old kid then they will. Oh they'll claim its in the name of ....bla bla bla... but in fact arrests are the name of their game.

Prosecutors are the same - they are interested in convictions alone - forget common sense.

Why do you think a girl was arrested for SENDING a nude picture of HERSELF to a boy who was ALSO arrested? Ruin a kids life? Who cares as long as the law enforcement officer gets a check mark on their score card.

I, too, question how the FBI knew about the file, and why they took so long. Indeed, they risked not finding anything (young nerds frequently swap out drives).

Then there's no telling who got p'd off after their kid downloaded a nasty, and then called their friend - the Senator, A.G., judge...

Yeah, there are parts of the files that are left on the HD, and therefore are recoverable. That's like file recovery progs work. Only if you use a shredder, you are shure about having no traces left on you HD (If you use a good one).

For the people that do collect illegal porn. They need help. For the people that make it they need to be hung. I don't care what it is you have on your hard drive If you don't want to be seen, tax returns or pictures of your wife. The only sure way is to smash it into dust. I don't care what software you buy The FBI can undo it.

Firstoff: Keep the paranoia down. You don't archieve anything by acting hastily.

Second: You began downloading files. Get rid of your incomplete folder with one of the data erasers Peerless mentioned. Best also get rid of your download folder. Then erase any of your LimeWire config files (so log files and similar disappear).

Third: The chances of you getting caught when you did it only once and didn't even finish the download are extremely slim. No need to get careless, but also no need to get paranoid.

@all: Please correct me, if anything above is wrong, or if anything could be done better.

An important quote from that report: "Although internet usage and the volume of content continue to rise globally, we are not seeing a proportionate rise in commercial child sexual abuse material which instead appears to have remained fairly static over recent years," said Peter Robbins, chief executive of the IWF.

The very idea that the state requires you to become involved as an informant or else be
falsely branded a sex offender is utterly unconscionable.

In states where prosecutors are elected the danger that a prosecutor would commit such a
crime is very real and has been reported to occur more than once in the past few years. None
of these cases were as famous as the crime committed against the lacrosse players at Duke U,
but that is mostly because this is the kind of thing that is typically done in the dark, out of the
press and public scrutiny, as both the falsely accused and the criminal accuser want it that way.

Currently there is no safe way to submit an anonymous tip, and if you try to do so while
maintaining your anonymity you face the strong possibility of the above crime being
committed against you. Not all prosecutors behave in that way, but in governments where
they are rewarded for doing so, some will indeed do so and are criminal enough at heart or are
so blinded by the horror of kiddy porn that they feel no remorse for their crimes.

Until that situation changes for the better I suggest that one either jump in or jump away. If
you want to be an activist then go right ahead and take your chances. Just be sure they always
know you are "on their side" even if it becomes obvious you inadvertantly turned in another
innocent victim of a mislabelled file, or you may end up on the receiving end along with your
victim. In light of this ridiculous situation the most responsible and safest course at present,
if you accidentally downloaded a file of that kind, is to delete it securely and move on.

As always, I suggest in the strongest terms that it is best to avoid sharing incomplete
downloads and your downloads folder. If what you share is always under your complete
control than this horror story can never happen to you.

I have always advised the developers of gnutella programs that automatically sharing files
before a user can check them is dangerous for many reasons but they always dismissed such
warnings because "it's good for the network". Well, now some years have passed and we have
seen some of these false prosecutions, many examples of RIAA extortion against people who
didn't know what they were sharing, the rampant spread of worms and spammers taking
advantage of inadvertent sharing to flood the network and accusations levelled against the
developers themselves of inducing copyright infringement by causing this inadvertent sharing.

Perhaps now they will take another look and think it through this time.

Well, I said every couple of months. But probably every six months is more accurate. It's Polk county, FL and we hear about it in Orange county, FL (Orlando) next door. The last article may be dead on the local sites but I found the abc news article on it. Reading it is going to freak people out but I will post it. The thing about it is that he catches like 20 people in ONE county. What the f are these guys thinking? Some of those old guys are truly sickening, but I can't help but wonder about the young guys, one of the ones here is only 17. Was he just being dumb? Would this have been a problem in a few years after a girlfriend or two? His life and his familys life is basically destroyed. I can't find the article, but the sting before this one of the guys actually killed himself. The idea of the pictures put a knot in my stomach, but so does the idea of a 17 yo old boy facing that kind of personal destruction for being stupid. Anyway, here is a link.

ABC News: The Many Faces of Child Porn Suspects

I am sure they is working on another one as we type.

Sometimes formatting has a bad sector check that overwrites all the sectors with a test pattern.
Even so, a pass over free space with a secure delete program would be a good idea to make sure.

LimeWire still can't ban child porn. The people who share it willingly will just change the files minimally and the ban won't work anymore.

In gnutellaforums, everyone who talks about where to find childporn is banned as soon as a moderator sees the post.

(but I can believe that there are adults who would harm children that way. If there weren't these sick people, then child porn would simply not exist.)

What Phex does to keep child porn from spreading is having a "nasty file filter" which is on by default and hides files with keywords which suggest that the file contains child porn. Luckily a brave user (who wants to stay anonymous) supplied us with a list of keywords to ban.

But you won't ever be able to completely "resolve" the issue without curing society, which means that society must stop destroying people psychically to the extend that these people feel the need to harm children to keep their own damaged psyche from breeaking. Sadly our world currently goes into the opposite direction and produces more and more psychically broken people.

Every war, every famine, every mobbing in class and every destruction of jobs creates psychically injured people, and a tiny minority of these break down so far that they harm children sexually to feel strong.

Besides: Many more people harm children in nonsexual ways. And often these are the religious "good guys" who want to impose their morals on the children. That's abuse, too, and sadly it's still tolerated and even supported by many.

As I posted this morning ( The post was deleted by mistake, right? ),
There's no point in contacting the authorities now because you have no evidence to
offer them and they cannot do anything. In fact, since you deleted it they just
might decide to seize your computer anyway just to cover their own sorry asses.

P2P is not a good source for tips anyway. The police pretty much have to patrol P2P
directly because then they can save evidence [such as IP addresses plus hash plus
exact time all together] as they find them and can then get warrants right away.
Working from a tip, they would have no choice but to go to the P2P network and
retrace your steps in hopes that they may find the bad file again. Since a tip is just
hearsay, they cannot go directly to a warrant and the chaotic nature of gnutella
means they might not be able to find it even if your tip is detailed and accurate.

As for wiping away traces of that one you almost downloaded, a defrag will be
good enough because your disk is already carrying a lot of data and defragmenting
is likely to wipe all the free sectors which once held the recently deleted file. You
should also be able to wipe free space with that nuker program, if it's anything like
the other good erasers you can get for free. That should be much more than
enough security for you.

Check both Arne_Barbe's post in this thread, also Peerless. In fact, do a search for previous posts by Peerless, he has recommended the best cleaners to go for. Not sure if it's in this thread or not.

Not much we can do about the secret tagging. Bitzi is a good way however to check the validity of a file. Bitzi site recently has been under problems, so hopefully it will be back to normal soon.

I did some research about "9 year old porn" limewire does not contain this but has some files named it.. it is trying to get peoples attention which is sick and wrong... a file is stuck on my computer now lolz... anyway ive deleted all the rest.. which were nothing. I think that police need to look into this wrong pornography !

An addiction like that wouldn't go away just because you get older.
Do you still want that addiction after you turn 18?

Keep searching and downloading that stuff, and you can be sure that some cop
will eventually find you. The gnutella network is not anonymous enough to avoid it.

hmm...I doubt it. I still think any computer can be traced if worse came to worse so still be careful but highly doubt the police will even consider it. It happens!
