Ultimate Guitarist Poll

What are you talking about?... One of the first african american guitarists?... That's just retarded, do Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and hundreRAB of blues guitarists not ring a bell?

It has nothing to do with his race.

Technical ability isn't useless. What's useless is a guitarist who thinks he's the greatest solely because of his technical ability.

When you think about it, technical ability limits what you can possibly play. You might be able to think of a great melody in your head, but unless you can actually play it, you have a problem.

Of course, some people will never be limited by technical ability because what they want to play isn't difficult. In which case, technicality isn't as relevant to their playing style. But either way, technicality isn't useless. It's just less important for some people.

This is about technical skill, and you added Kurt Cobain.

Hmmm......

Most of your options suck too, i could name more worthy players for such a poll, in fact you left out a lot of technicaly skilled players for guitarists who arent very worthy, such as Kerry King, whos a very sloppy soloist, his rhythm playing is tight, but his soloing is very sloppy...And he lacks versatility.

I'm sorry, but Cobain wasn't necessarily good. Just because he's dead now, doesn't make him a legend. Have you ever tried to play one of Nirvana's songs on guitar? They're just very easy to learn and play.

My opinion of the best guitarist ever is going to Buckethead. He's different. He's mysterious and that's why I love him. He hides his true identity because he doesn't want to be known for anything else besides his music. He wants people to only see him for what he's good at. He's an EXCELLENT guitarist with a totally unique style.

Simplicity is one of the major rules. Just as important as being technical, at any level of talent, for that matter, as a musician. Opinions & personal views, etc, Are just as important also. To songwriters, producers. The music industry altogether. To succeed as an artist, One must possess the talent & mature always. As a musician/Artist. Within any era of the music industry past & present. (keep an open mind/be versatile).

No doubt! Prince is one of the most talented musicians of all, I do not remeraber exactly how many instruments he has mastered. It seems that it was around 13 or so? Let alone he is the producer for his own music & other artist as well. I always think of Stevie Wonder, when relating to Prince for some reason?

My favourite guitarist would be someone like Greg Ginn from Black Flag or Tom Verlaine from Television but since we're talking the best technical guitarists I would be temped to say Wes Montgomery, not the most amazing some might say but in my opinion he is amazing.

Once again boo-boo, you have missed my point. i'm not saying that people who read music perfectly dont play with emotion. I'm saying that no matter how well they read, they will never be able to sound exactly like certain guitarist/other (such as Gilmore or Santana). The tone is in the fingers. And its tone that seperates guitarists like that from everybody else. Thats why guys that read perfect are usually unknown and hillbilly guys who couldnt read Dr. Suess become internationally known and respected. That is what makes a great guitarists, thier TONE. Not thier ability. I have a strat and can play SRV and Gilmour, but i cant SOUND like them. No matter how close i get my electronics/effects like thiers. NO ONE CAN.

I'd say Jimmy Page is the greatest hes my idol and well hes the most versital one out of all of them, David Gilmour is the best slow player and the one who put the most heart in his solos. I think Stevie Ray Vaughn is the best blues player even better then BB King and all of them. And I don't like Eddie Van Halen or Slash, because they are just punks compared to Page and Gilmour and others I think.

Yes it is. but hopefully it's not a forum for the same argument again and again and again and again and again. Especially with a pointless topic like this.

I'd say Hammett isn't that great. But Hetfield is very good. I like the rhythm work in Metallica, and as far as I know, Hetfield wrote all the rhythm and acoustic parts in Metallica and a chunk of Hammett's solos. Not to mention, Hammett had nothing to do with Kill 'Em All either. By the time you take out all the stuff that Mustaine, Hetfield and Burton wrote, I don't think Hammett wrote that much.

I might be wrong. But it is hard to tell, because credits are never very specific as to who wrote what. I haven't heard his stuff in Exodus though.

First off I hope I'm using this quote thing right.
On your comment about what makes Keith Urban country, besides the fact that he's won numerous country awarRAB, is regulary played on country radio, and all of his videos are played on GAC and CMT I really can't explain.
Now what I meant by him being one of the greatest guitarists is that in country music I think he is one of the best. I think he's pretty good for not being even 40 years old. Personally I don't believe there is one great guitarist, because there are too many, and there are too many genres to choose just one person. Take a listen to Better Life by Keith Urban and listen to his guitar solo towarRAB the end of the song.
