The app installs fine... it just won't connect without the APN set for internet.com.

well that makes total sens because this app is regulated by RIM and anything that goes thru rim's servers besides pin and push is blocked on this plan so u guys are outta luck facebook app is not gonna work no matter what. sorry

Eek.. it has nothing to do really with being regulated by RIM. The application requires TCP access to the 'net, which is provided by the Rogers internet.com APN (which we can't use, since that's for application data, which is a no-no). This is applicable to applications on the BB that need TCP, regardless of whether or not they were made by RIM.

Some apps work on the $15 plan because they can be configured to not use TCP, therefore avoiding the internet.com APN. Others are limited only by service books (Google Talk and Yahoo, for instance). This was explained over in the giant thread on HoFo.

But you're right. It doesn't look like we'll be seeing the Facebook app on our BB's anytime soon. Personally, I'm just waiting for Rogers to step up to base with the rumoured new data plans, which should be sometime this or next month. The $15 plan is fun... but I do need my SSH client and such...

Just a FYI.

are you seriously trying to explain to me how the loophole works when im the one that wrote the whole tutorial thats on the first page including providing the service books for gtalk and all ? LOL
what im trying to explain to you is that the facebook app goes thru the blackberry servers if on a BIS/BES plan no matter if made by RIM or not as you said but if they are made by rim they GO THRU RIMS server.
It works on internet.com apn because it thinks youre not on a BIS plan.
anyways please re read my answer and check out my whole tutorial before trying to act all allmighty lol jk

take care

No... I was sharing a bit of light on the actual specifics of how the loophole actually works.

If the app needs to use the TCP stack (whether on a BIS/BES, or using the carrier APN), it obviously won't work. This is true whether I'm using the Facebook App, midpssh, gcalsync, etc. Whether or not the Facebook application connects through RIM's servers / was developed by RIM is quite irrelevant, since if there's no TCP connection available, it won't work. That applies to -any- application requiring the mobile data service that is outside of the blackberry.net push and im apn. HTTP connections are fine with certain apps, as you know.

Yeah. And as I said to confirm... it's completely useless to us on the $15 unlimited plan. I'm not denying that.

I have read your tutorial. Before that, I had been following all the threads regarding it over on HoFo (I lurk there a bit more often than I lurk here on the stacks, especially after my 7280 died a few years ago ). I don't know why you're pointing me to read it, as it doesn't address how/why the loophole works, just how to take advantage of it (which is fine by me ).

I hope you didn't take offense to my post, since none was intended. As I said, it was just a FYI.

i did think you were trying to be a smarta** but apparently not so no no offense taken and thanks for shedding light as you say lol

as of today my opera stopped working, i have toggled all the settings..... anybody else had this problem?? could rogers have found a block?

Toggling wireless on/off, a soft reset, or a battery pull should resolve this problem. Happens every few days when you're doing this...

I finally got my hands on another SIM with data enabled, and I notice that RIM has AIM and MSN apps now, but won't allow them to be downloaded from the web, you get a page that says they have to be OTA install.

... but when I stick in my Pay-as-you-go SIM and try to go to the RIM download page, I get a "Browser Incorrect" message, just like if you try to view the page in Firefox, even though I'm using the BlackBerry Browser!

I've tried with both the BB Browser ("Do More") and the WAP Browser ("WAP Browser (Rogers)"). What gives? I figure these apps must work under the $15 plan, if only I can download the fricking things. I can view other pages just fine, RIM's page just refuses to see my BlackBerry as a BlackBerry.

Khalnath, you can only download OTA from the BlackBerry website with a proper BlackBerry Plan. Period. And for the record, I spent a lot of time and effort getting the RIM MSN client and the appropriate Service Books and it doesn't work anyways on Rogers, nor on Telus. Bell is the only provider that has an agreement with MSN in place.

I don't have any personal experiences with that, but I don't see any reason why you couldnt. Even if you get Windows Live Messenger and its Service Books, it still won't work.
