Trying to root MyTouch 3G

I've been following instructions from this:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/26/how-to-root-the-htc-mytouch-3g/

But when it comes to flashing the recovery image, it just says "download recovery image" but it's grayed out. I've tried other flashrec's but it says "could not install recovery on this phone". I've been hacking at this since yesterday afternoon when I first got the phone. Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

I have a MyTouch with 1.6, but I tried it downgraded while on 1.5. I have upgraded since then. Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

Just trying to get the 2.0 firmware on here.

What recovery are you trying to flash and where is is grayed out at? This is the link for Amon RA recovery. I'm not a MT3G owner, I have had 2 G1's, a Behold II and currently an N1. I will try to give assistance if I can.

Ill get that info when I get home. But when you flash the recovery after you back up the one you have. Well that option is greyed out. I've seen in videos where it says "flash Cynogen 1.4" but I never saw that option, I believe that flash was 8715 but I'm not sure.

That's an old video, Cyan 1.4 is an old recovery. You will have to go with Amon RA which you have the link for or ClockWork Recovery.

That seems to be the easiest way to do it, but I have to be rooted before I can use the app it says.

So that link you posted above will be the one I'll need to root?

I just watched the video and I don't think it matters, 1.7.0 is the current image. When you download the Amon RA. rename it to recovery.img on your desktop before you transfer it to your phone. Then when you type /sdcard/recovery.img it shouldn't be greyed out.

Well I just tried it again, renaming the file to "recovery.img", opening the flash rec and typing in /sdcard/recovery.img and there is now "flash recovery" button, it just says "download recovery image" but I can't click on it, it's shaded. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong here, I'm going step by step but I keep getting stuck in the same place.

This is the flashrec I'm running.

flashrec-1.1.3-20091107-2.apk

It just says "Backup Complete" nothing else. I'm stumped.

You did format the sd card and download the linda file manager, didn't you? Are you rooted and just need the recovery image? You can download a free terminal emulator from the market, once installed bring it up and type su (enter) if it comes back with # you are rooted and can get the recovery image either with fastboot or through the terminal emulator.

If you have root you can do the following:
Download the 1.7.0 recovery image and rename it recovery.image
Copy recovery.img to the root of your sdcard
start the terminal app
type su (enter)
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

I did format the sd card yes, I downloaded Linda but it doesn't open on my phone. The app just goes black with a white bar at the bottom talking about advertising with a e-mail address, so I am using a file manager by the Adao Team. No I'm not rooted, I'm trying to Root so I can install a Hero ROM or anything better than 1.5/6. But basically trying to get rooted so I can install ROM's.

One thing I was thinking since it's grayed oud did you make sure that Settings>applications>unknown sources is checked. If so I will try to PM someone with that phone that might be able to help.

I watched the video and it just seems so straight forward, can't understand what's going wrong. Not trying to be a smart aleck, but did you look at this.

Reported Issues
Issue: I get Invalid Recovery Image or Flash Recovery doesn’t show up, it stays greyed out!

Solution: Make sure that the spell correction and auto completion are OFF in the Text Settings (Settings > Locale and Text > Touch Input > Text Input then turn off Prediction, spell correction, and word completion) of your phone. If not then it may put in spaces where they do not belong. (I had it put a space after .img and couldn’t see it so couldn’t figure out why it kept saying invalid recovery image, like you guys).

Other than that, just make sure it is on the root of the SD card (not in any folder) and that you are typing in:

/sdcard/recovery.img

and it should show Flash Recovery

Issue: When I download the FlashRec.apk it shows up as a .zip not an apk.

Solution: No problem. Do NOT extract it, just simply replace the .zip with .apk and then proceed with the procedure.

Issue: I get backup failed or flash failed when I try to use the FlashRec progam.

Solution: This is most likely because you already have a custom recovery image (OR HAVE DONUT), please use one of the unrooting procedures to get back to the original recovery image and THEN you can use this procedure.

I'm sure it's something stupid. But I can't seem to grasp what I'm doing wrong honestly.

I have a flashrec.apk which you said didn't matter what version it was. I type in the command "/sdcard/recovery.img", with the recovery image being renamed from that sapphire 1.7.0.img. I'm not using Linda file manager because for whatever reason it just stays black on the screen. So I'm running a different FM. It says back up complete, but does not give me an option to flash.

Another question, can I flash the recovery through telnet? That might be a way to fix the problem.

Don't think telnet will work for that. Here's another root guide and it says you need to use linda file manager, the others aren't compatable.

If you can't get linda, pm me your email and I will send the apk to you.

I tried that turn off the spell check and it worked! I didn't think it would make a difference but it did the job. I followed the rest of the steps and partitioned the SD according it, I am now rooted! Thanks so much for being patient with me. Now to find a 2.1 style ROM!

Glad you finally got it done. No this isn't a Hero rom but it's the most used rom out there. Has everything you need and more, not flashy but it just works.

Thanks man, I'm running this Eclair 2.1 but I can't download apps from the market, and that's a major loss. I will try the one you linked too, and will give my reviews after
