Sooo, I lost my job after 4 1/2 years of service and a few months later got a decently paying job which I then lost a few months later. The first job I lost due to the economy and the changes my company was making to cope with it and the second was a mixture of lack of previous experience, no training and their lack of organization (a little bit me and a little bit of them on that one).

Anyway I realized that if I was going to be a more appealing job candidate I needed to finish the bachelor's degree I started so very long ago. I have my AA and really only need a little over 30 credits to finish. Previous to my unemployed state I made too much money to qualify for financial aid and worked too much to have time for school. But now I am unemployed, my lease on my house was over, I thought, perfect opportunity, I will qualify for loans and aid and can live on that and unemployment and stay with a friend for a few months. Everyone said there is so much money for school and that was a great idea. HA!!

I can get absolutely no money for school, no pell, no loans so now I am back to square one. I went to the FAFSA website, did everything right they said I make too much money for pell but qualify for Stafford loans and shit. They disqualified me on the pell due to the last year's income which is non existent, pain in the ass but there is a form to fill out and paperwork to turn in to overcome that. So it should be fine, right? HA!!

Even though I got back into UCF my last semester I had shitty grades and it turns out they can put all my financial aid on hold. I have filled out an appeal but after talking to financial aid things look grim and school starts on Monday. From talking to fin. aid and a bunch of people it seems like I will have to cough up several hundred dollars of my own to take a class at the community college, get an A and they reapply for Financial Aid at UCF. I don't have several hundred dollars.

WTF do I do??

Come and live with me, all our schools are free

Try to make phonecalls, visit them personally(the ones who decide on that shit) and explain what your situation is.

You may have to start with the loan, sadly enough. You should be able to get enough (depending on how many hours you're taking) to charge your books to your financial aid if you hurry. Our last day to charge books to our financial aid is August 21st, but yours would probably be the week after since classes appear to start a week later. As long as you're enrolled in at least 6 credit hours, the loan is deferred until 6 months after you graduate.

Talk to unemployment about retraining programs.
Talk to the local community college about programs for dislocated workers.
And don't get shitty grades in the future.

ooooh, I forgot about programs like that. See if you're eligible for what's called Vocational Rehab. I'm on the military version, but there may be a civilian version as well. I'm at the campus right now, printing some documents and basically just chillin' or whatever. I'll get that answer before I leave today.

There appears to be a Vocational Rehab program for civilians who qualify as well. This may be a local/regional number, but the financial aid office at your local school will have a better number if this one doesn't pan out.

1-800-487-4042. Vocational Rehab. Mine pays for classes, fees, books, and supplies. Awesome, eh?

I can't get the loans either.

Coa, I got denied the money even though I said I was a dislocated worker but the community college might let it go but I still can't start this semester. I am no longer a 20 something fucktard so I will finish my classes this time and get good grades.

Push hard and try to get in spring semester. Don't give up. It IS worth fighting for. I did, and got more help than I thought I would. You obviously have a bit more of a challenge, but the money is out there (or it should be). And I have faith in you

I'm sorry darkling. That's a tough time. I hope you can hang in there somehow until you Do get some aid? I dunno. That's a tough one. Some people would argue to keep looking for a job. Others school all the way. I think you should do what you think is right. I hope things look better soon.

You can write a letter to FAFSA explaining that you LOST your job and currenlty have NO income.

In fact when you fill out your FAFSA there is a section for expected income for the next year.

What if my situation changes?
Some questions ask you to make projections; for example, you must estimate your family's income tax status for the coming year. If your answers to these questions change, wait until you receive your SAR, and then check with your financial aid administrator. You cannot update income or asset information to reflect changes to your family's financial situation if those changes took place after the FAFSA was filed.

The income and expense information reported on the FAFSA must be accurate for the past year (2009), not for the coming year. If your financial situation changes, check with your financial aid administrator.

So.......................................

I don't think you filled it out right the first time.

I filled it out properly but they made me do a follow up b/c regardless of your situation changing if you show that much money as your income it gets denied, granted if you fill out the follow up form you can get it but that isn't the problem. I talked to UCF today and the financial aid person said I wasn't at 70% (too boring to explain) but the bottom line is I can manage to cough up some money for Valencia (community college) by Spring term and once I finish that course they will reconsider unfreezing my loans.

Really, because when I lost my job at Dell, the next year I got a full Pell Grant, and I explained to them that I had lost my job. That's even counting my savings and 401K cash out. So thats weird.

Did anyone ever tell you "DUDE! You're getting a Dell!"

And D8, did you ever considered stripping? I hear they make good money. I bet you could get your first year paid off in a couple weeks
