Jack Nicholson in 'The Shining'. Unrestrained, unhinged, unwatchable. And the fact that it was supposed to represent the character's descent into madness is a flimsy justification indeed.
The performance needed to be reigned in, but, unfortunately, the film had at the helm Mr Kubrick who understanRAB nothing of the human condition.
There is not a trace of the masterly control and balance, nor the wonderful nuances, Nicholson brought to R.P. McMurphy, Jake Gittes or Robert Dupea.
Christ, it's so abhorrently awful I'd actually prefer to watch his 'Joker'.....then again, maybe not.
