Transformers - will it be any good

I think what people need to understand is that the Transformers will NOT look exactly like they do on the animated TV Show. This is because, as it has been revealed in various interviews, including the Empire interview, is that they have to update them for now...make it look realistic, while still inkeeping with their recognisable and traditional looks.

Megatron's pics were leaked and people went apesh*t. Observe: http://www.themovieblog.com/archives/2006/08/megatron_pictures.html
These are, keep in mind, work-in-progress pics and the design may indeed be changed, (...mainly I think because of the uproar caused by fans).

I'm not sure about Optimus's flames on his body but it shouldn't really harm is character.

That aside, the story has to be good to make the movie enjoyable, CGI and special effects aside, the makers are apparently making sure the story works. It'll all come down to how deeply you feel about the franchise or how bothered you are at the changes.

There is a difference between "inkeeping with their recognisable and traditional looks" and what has been done however. It is, essentially, a film with nothing to do with Transformers save a couple of names slapped on some of the characters. Nobody expected them to look exactly the same, but the Citroen adverts demostrated that what looks like "Transformers" works on screen, and what is appearing on the film looks utterly different, for no more reason that Michael Bay's aesthetic tendencies of "more=better".

It won't be to any significant extent. Toy pictures have shown up and it's much the same design, they've been filming with a 50 foot Megatron prop that looks identical to the leaked design for nine months and the writers have said it is too late to make any changes now.

The script has already leaked and isn't good, and there's no box-office names as a draw. I think it'll loose a lot of money personally, and I hope people involved realise why.

Fair enough, I doa gree with you tho, that the dancing and ice-skating Citroen car adverts show that a Transformers movie is possible and I also agree that the design's for them have been messed up quite badly...they've basically wanted them to appear more alien than simply a car turning into a man-type-thing.

It's certainly dividing people, some say its good it's updated, some say it just isn't Transformers...it could very well end up being a flop. I'm keeping my hopes moderately high.

You are right though, it does seem to have very little do to with the actual franchise, save for some names from the series and aslo the lack of big name stars may hurt them but then again, it's Transformers and even if...say, Tom Cruise wern't in it, the movie name itself, will bring in the big buck/pounRAB...other currency... :D

Actually I think if it had had any big name starts on it, it may have hurt the movie. You know? Taken the focus away from what the movie is supposed to be about? (The Autobots/Deceptacons Feud).

It has? I've been watching this production quite closely for some time now, and I've not stumbled across that. Got any links?

BTW, I love most of the new designs (and we have had a LOT of designs over the years) except maybe Starscream and 'Tron. I've yet to be sold on them just yet.Nah. It doesn't matter what they look like, or if the movie sucks or is a masterpiece. It will make huge box office, mark my worRAB. ;)

Having read a few more threaRAB and seen a few more released pictures, I do have to wonder, why didn't they keep the design of the 'bots simple?...

I am quite excited about this film, regardless of the fan-boys having hissy fits, it's Michael Bay and Transformers meaning it's going to be loud and bold also it's errrmm set on July 4th. Very Independence day isn't it????

Of course they're supposed to be complicated.

The problem is that was a stupid decision, given a rule of design is that unneccessarily complicated things are ugly.

Again, it's not like the Citroen adverts didn't prove something akin to the aesthetic of Transformers worked perfectly well.

didnt i read somewhere it has one of the biggest movie budgets ever? something like 150 million?

of course, that doesnt mean it will be good, but at least we can all sleep safe in the knowledge it will look amazing!

im looking forward to it, and i think its right they made them look complicated, as a transforming robot would be!!

After reading some of the comments here I am feeling kind of optimistic that this will be pretty good movie for a saturday night. To be honest I hardly remember the "storyline" from the cartoons so I don't care how different it is.

I heard they got the guy who did Prime's voice in the cartoon for the movie?

Peter Cullen and Frank Welker are reprising their roles as Prime and Megatron.

Sadly Chris Latta (whose voicing of the treacherous Starscream was brilliant) is no longer with us. They have kept the Megatron/Starscream dynamic which was one of the best aspects of Transformers.

They could not have Megatron turn into a gun because that would involve shrinking and whilst that works in a cartoon/comic book it would look silly in live action. A Walther PPK is not especially firghtening in a world full of guns.

I always preferred Simon Furman's characterisation of Grimlock in the UK Transformers comics to the monosylabic moron of the cartoons and US comics. Grimlock is quite a topical character because he is much more "hardline" than Prime. I would love to see Grimlock make an appearance if there is a 2nd Transformers film (actually the third Transformers film techically).

It'll be loud, dopey, popcorn fodder; whether you feel that's a criterion of 'being good' or not is entirely up to you. If it's 'mindless fun' then it'll do pretty well at the box-office; if they forget the 'fun' element though, it'll tank big time...
