Well, let's put it another way... if the pressure inside the pipe was LESS than 2K PSI, no oil would escape at all... Given the pressure is fed by the pressure of the earth on the oil source, which is far deeper, it could very well be around 9K PSI. Hence why all the attempts to cap it have failed.
 
i was referring to the BOP itself, at a depth of 5000 ft.... not to mention that thats the seafloor its bolted into.. so an additional 13000ft of depth.. you're counting the earth's crust and not actual water pressing down on the BOP.

i'm not a petroleum engineer though.

Why are they saying "we need absorbant booms", but when you tell them you have the ability to make 20,000,000 feet they lock up and disappear?

My mistake.

Although many of my statements still stand. BP wants to try something, so they start with the easiest solution that may work and has little risk of making the situation work. This, if successful, gives them more time to engineer riskier solutions that should be more successful.

have you actually broke down these genius ideas they've had? Let's put a giant lid over it and call it done. That didn't work? Fuck. Let's try to get a bypass hose in there and divert as much oil as we can to that. That didn't work? Fuck. Let's try to dump a bunch of shit into the pipe and hope that blocks the leak.
