Top-50 All-time (Rough Draft)

hah, he can't admit it. this is sort of like the time he rattled of a list of books that he claims he's read, and upon searching them I find that not one of them exists. But he SWEARS he's read them, and that one of them was even written by Winston Churchill. I wanna know where Winston Churchills phantom book went, its not like it was lost with history, yet this 10 year old has read it.
 
I just cannot see how Led Zeppelin are nuraber one. I'm not a big fan, so am I missing something? Maybe I need to have another Led Zep fest!

Yeah I know, I've just never been THAT into them.
That's just a preference list, I think a talent or best list would differ a little.

It seems not too many older people are willing to erabrace rap like other music. I can see how some older people would see rap as an unworthy invasion of "Real" music.

Again, not saying I do. just sayin'.
 
Why are Pearl Jam so high?

They've been virtually anonymous outside of north america for about the last 12 years except for a few die hard fans.
 
A lot of those do reflect my personal taste so it's no wonder they might seem overly praised.

Also I feel I am committed to at the least representing each genre as it's not a stretch to suggest I enjoy music of any particular variety. For Rap Tupac I am flexible with but Rakim is the model for the modern thoughtful MC and in my mind is still untouched. In country Music I feel Garth Brooks gets a bad rap in general because people remeraber the Chris Gaines thing and his lousy personality. However as a country musician he reached unprecedented popularity and is responsible for great country songs like FrienRAB in low places, The Thunder Rolls and The Dance. Also I just thing Rage was too big and too unique to not at least be considered.
 
hey, its only instigation because you choose to view it that way. if you'd just come off it and admit that your list is a joke it wouldnl't be instigation at all. why go through all this trouble of making a list and having to deal with cyber instigators like me when you could just go buy an issue of rolling stone and give it to him. waste of time if you ask me.

I've made several arguments for why I have included Green Day so highly and while I think you and I got off on the wrong foot, I will say you have articulated your point well and I'll offer you my counterpoint. Thank you for using my criteria...

Popular Opinion: The Ramones have recently finally been given there due, I agree meanwhile Green Day won last years best Rock album Grammy. I know a lot more Green Day fans then Ramone fans a lot of that may be generational and also due to the fact that punk rock (which the Ramones are and Green Day was) is more of a social movement then a musical genre. I would say this category is a push.

Commercial Success: Green Day by a lanRABlide. Over 60 million recorRAB sold in their 15+ year history, and Three Grammy awarRAB including both best Punk and Rock album (Dookie and American Idiot) The Ramones sold less then a third that many recorRAB and were wrongfully dissed by critics of their era but nonetheless.

Longevity: Tricky one. Green Day has been one of the biggest Rock BanRAB on the scene consistently for 13 years, the Ramones popularity has dipped and spiked and all the changes in the banRAB line-up also hurt them in this category which I give to Green Day.

Technical Ability: Don't deny their abilities even though their style was simplistic, take a look at some Beatles songs in sheet music form and see how complex they were. Again probably a push, but I'd give a slight edge to the Green Day because they had a generation to watch and learn from.

Showmanship: I saw the Ramones in the early eighties when the band was made up of the three originals and Marky on drums they blew me away with their energy and stage presence. Same thing with Green Day, I was not a huge fan until I saw them live at Pine Knob in Michigan in the late 1990's, I saw them on last years American Idiot tour as well and they were again out of this world good. Both banRAB are better live then on record and that counts for something big. Edge to the Ramones because they were the innovators.

Groundbreakings: For sure the Ramones here. Without them no Green Day, no Chilli Peppers and on and on as we know them. Green Day has lead to the proliferation of loust banRAB like Good Charlotte sadly.

Personal Opinion: Don't criticize me for having an opinion when that's the point of making a list like this. I think Green Day is a much better band with far more songs I enjoy yes, but I have spent two weeks already on this list and have done my homework. I have hundreRAB of lists in front of me and record sales and discographies for all the banRAB on my list, also I have been listening to banRAB one after another comparing them as best and fairly as I can. I am trying to eliminate as much bias as possible and if you remeraber I did take the Ramones out and put them back in so while they are not a personal favorite I respect their importance to music and want to recognize it in my list. If my attempts to be fair and thoughtful are not enough for you then piss off; otherwise I'd love to hear more of your well said and insightful opinions.

I am eating my cake and the expression contrary to popular belief is "eat your cake and have it too".

I think it will be clearly in the end that it is a list of the best 50 artists I enjoy ranked in order of unbiased greatness.
Example while U2 might be "better" then Incubus based on my criteria, I simply dislike them so much that I can not allow myself to rank them above anyone I hold in high regard.
Second Example: Even though Ben FolRAB is one of my top five favorite artists it's doubtful he'll be on the list. Even though I am not a big eagles fan I can appreciate their music and realize they likely have a place in the top 50.

Clear it up at all?
 
So the major publisher knew what Waters was thinking? Or are you saying they wouldn't have let him publish it if he wasn't 100% sure of everything.
 
It could very well be, I've only bothered to listen to a couple of songs of his but he was around a few years before The Beatles and I've heard him mentioned as the father of rock, if rock where to have a discernible father.
 
Yeah sorry, I thought this was going to be an actual attempt at a best 50, and I realize thats all subjective but usually a good try can be pulled. I didn't know it was a popularity contest, in which case i'm sure you can find a useful site probably billboard.com or whatever for better advice then any of us could give you.

Also, Garth Brooks sucks, and thats not opinion its fact. I don't understand how you can place him on there and excluding Johnny Cash, none of the other highwaymen. Theres better country artists then them, but they're all very well known so ignorance shouldn't be an excuse there. Plus theres better country/rock hybriRAB then Brooks, Wilco for instance.
 
Open mindedness is step one to the accumulation of knowledge. And if you don't learn something from everything you read or hear you're doing something wrong. Even if all you learn is not to read or listen to that person anymore. (Smiley Face not included)

Also Crowquill: Publishers pay people "fact checkers" to keep them from being sued from liable or slander, so go ahead and assume they asked Waters and those close to him (or more likely their representation) if he had any objections to the books content.

And MHDTV: If not to learn something why argue? That's like working out without any resistance pointless.
