Who would suggest to replace those four in the top 10. I am pretty sure I'll be keeping Clapton there as I feel you greatly under rate him as a 20-40 guy. Still I respect your opinion and would like to know who you would bump up and why.

Paul McCartney however wrote a song about HIS F*CKING DOG.

Yeah, a tribute to one of the greatest works in western literature, that is so much more pathetic than writing a music hall love ballad to an english sheepdog.

I feel like this is an argument that can only be made from a biased perspective. Efforts to put criteria in place have proven to be a flawed premise as even the definition of each measure is subjective.

Therefore I'd like to scrap the Criteria and instead recommend people just make arguments for banRAB they believe are great based on the reasons they love the artist. I would suggest maybe making a top 50 list for the forum 6 months or a year from now. This place is inundated with lists right now and the diversity is only weakening each individually.

I don't disagree with anything you said, I just don;t think your points really address my reasoning for Zeppelin's place on the list. And Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry are not exactly on the tip of the average American's tongue when you ask about favorite musicians. I don't question their impact on other Musicians but that's only one criteria same as record sales, The groups at the top of my list do not come up short in any of the categories.
 
You're telling me you can't find one reason that the ramones and green day and comparable? I can think of about 6. Actually Green Day might be more comparable to the Ramones than any other punk band of the past.
 
I get so pissed off when I see Green Day thrown in among some great punk rock banRAB. Green Day does not deserve the acknowledgment that people give them. What pisses me off the most is when people class them as punk rock. They should be labeled as crap rock.

true. But i think in order for it to work it has to be a group effort, not chosen solely by one person. I think thats why this fell apart, and why ethan polls work better :)
 
I think there is a reason that many of "cliche" greats have become so. They are more widely relevant and influential.

I know your opinion on Dylan is one that is widely shared by folk fans, however Dylan transcended folk and wrote amazing rock songs as well which is an almost unanimous contention among popular opinion in the music world. Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie while perhaps expressing their music more articulately and skillfully did so on a much smaller level and therefore rarely garner the type of attention that would put them on similar lists.

I resent your contention that the list is cliche and would be delighted to argue it point by point on occasion if the thread keeps your interest.
 
This list is a recreation of other Lists. That's what all lists are after the original. They are templates to use mixed with critical thinking and evaluation as well as surveying of the music community and it's fans to improve. Just like all automobiles are a recreation of the model-T and all wheels a recreation of the stone original.
