Top-50 All-time (Rough Draft)

boo boo

Put the super fanboy cape on my back. Regardless, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis were Pioneers of Rock and Roll, but neither has stood the test of time very well. How many people did you know growing up who had any of their CD's? What they did was pave the way for future artists to take the music to a new level. I suppose you could debate their place as being along side or ahead of Zeppelin under circumstances, however if I am going be accused of recreating a list I can't stand idly by and let you roll off Rolling Stones Immortals list almost verbatim as a counterpoint to Zeppelin inclusion amongst the top 5 or 10.

I am a huge Velvet Underground fan, but they borabed during their existence. Warhol's ego alienated rock and roll fans and overshadowed the amazing groundbreaking music they were producing. It's was only years after when their sound was clearly starting to influence new banRAB that the finally got the recognition they deserve. Still however four albums and only two real memorable ones. Not sure I could justify them over Zeppelin, or the Who, Pink Floyd or Bob Dylan for that matter.

Buddy Holly may be at the top of this list had he The Big Bopper and Richie Valens not boarded that plane, however tragedy did strike. And while rock and roll teaches use that it's better to burn out then to fade away, such a limited discography prevents him from really being a top 25 candidate in my opinion.

I appreciate the way you argue your points, and while I disagree I feel your criticisms are valid and thoughtful.

RE: The Ramones

They have one song. All of them. They all sound the same. Green Day is the largest act of the last decade.

Opinions are what they are, don't scold me for following popular opinion by selecting banRAB you consider cliche among the best ever and then scold again when I go outside the box and put Green Day so high on the list in favor of the Ramones who I personal enjoy but feel are very overrated. I would rather debate the topics then have you act condescendingly hypocritical. I know what I typed, just respond to it if your wish to, don't interview yourself please.

Sorry about the Arlo\Woody Guthrie thing that was lame. At least i didn't say Bob Segar though right? And I agree folk music is under represented, but at this time I am not in my mind qualified to properly select representatives. That's why I am putting it out there for public scrutiny and improvement.

The Ramones never got popular until very recently, but now they're extremely popular. They frequently appear on greatest banRAB lists, normally I don't use that because in alot of cases it doesn't mean much, but vh1, rolling stone, Spin put them as nuraber 2 following the beatles and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, though lately that doesn't say much.

They're influence is huge, Metallica, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Tom Waits, the ORABpring, Rancid, Guns and Roses, L7, Bad Religion, Motorhead, the Queers, Rooney, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pete Yorn, the Pretenders, Garbage, Bad Brains, and Megadeth. Plus they're one of the most influential punk banRAB ever, and arguably the most influential pop-punk band. They were a huge influence on Green Day, their kiRAB were named after them.

The only reason he gave for inducting them that I saw was

Really, the only points are, that history may be kind to them, complete guess work, people having strong feelings about them (which doesn't mean much at all, most popular banRAB people have strong feelings about) and of course, they're popular. Well that is the only actual reason, and lets look at some popular artists shall we? 50 Cent, Jessica Simpson, Pink, Fergie, Fall Out Boy, Simple Plan, Beyonce, do I need to go on? Popularity doesn't mean shit.

Popular Opinion: Well, I see the Ramones bashed for being too 'simple' but for the most part people like them alot.
Commercial Success: I don't know about awarRAB, but lately they've sold alot of albums. I'll grab their album sales if you want me to.
Longevity: Over 30 years and still respected and loved.
Technical Ability: Not very, but this punk not metal.
Showmanship: I've read one interview with Joey Ramone, it was interesting I don't see why interviews matter I mean what does it have to do with music? Look at Nick Drake, I guess showmanship wise he would've technically sucked but does that make him bad? No. The Ramones were amazing live from what i've heard/seen.
Groundbreakings: I already posted about how influential they were, they weren't a super original punk band there were others doing similar stuff but they certainly were one of the best at it.
Personal Opinion: Well obviously they fail that, which is probably going to be the problem with this list.

With the exception of Personal Opinion, I think the Ramones have Green Day beat in every category.

Prog too eclectic to be generic? Please explain why most of it is so boring then. and technically solid usually means technically boring. His guitar tone seems to waver between highly distorted but not quiet heavy usually and those two things together usually equal hurt teeth. And his solos have no feeling.

And gee, all you can bash about the Beach Boys is there lyrics. Major flaws there, especially coming from an elementary schooler who has no idea what a metaphor actually is. But hey, least you got dictionary.com

They're not even the same damn chorRAB.

Also wasn't it supposed to be a ripoff of Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla? No wait, its a ripoff of Louie Louie, or is it ripoff of Debaser? Hmm.

Yet another example of desperately trying to discredit a band, when you can't even decide what f*cking song they apparrently ripped off.

just because john lennon has an opinion about elvis doesnt mean it makes his music better. he (elvis) was a pop icon who didnt write a lot of his own music. im glad that he inspired john lennon, but thats about it.

leave the critics to their critiquing and the singers to their singing.... they already get to be musically talented and get the super hot chicks, leave us with some kind of dignity. ;)

Not by my local papers, or any other professional reviews I've seen. Still, KC>RATM because the categories it won are more important. Which is of course the flaw in this rating system.

Re: Simon and Garfunkel

I know I know, I just can't take anyone else off yet. Maybe the Ramones can go.

Also I don't know if Genesis belongs on this list...Any thoughts?

BTW: I doubt I'll ditch 311 because of the significance they hold for me personally and the fact they have been making good music for 15 years in an era of johnny-come-latelys

Keep the comments coming!

you just showed them for me. over 70% of the country made up of whites. even if 100% of the 12.8% of black in the country purchase rap it still wouldn't compare to the amount of white people that purchase it.

edit -

here is a link with links to various sources backing up this claim... one even suggesting 70% of the music is purchased by white consumers.

Google Answers: gangster rap audience

Look, Simon & Garfunkel is vastly more talented, influential, succesful, they're more critically succesful, and they are still incredibly unique than Green Day. Done deal.
