Alt Rock didn't? ROCK didn't. "Rock" as a general term has absolutely no distinguishing stylistic criteria. "Rock" doesn't tell you what instruments will be used, what vocal style, what time signature/beat, or anything else. Terms like Rock, Punk, Hip-Hop and Country have a lot more to do with cultural associations than firm stylistic grounRAB. You can say that the Chilis are not a prototypical rock band. But by association and cultural standing, they most definitely qualify as "rock".

mmmm.... difficult, I have many banRAB in myt mind right now.... I cannot put them in a propper order, the first is the only one, the othrers come to my mind now...

i don't think i already listed a top10 here so why not. more or less in order

black sabbath - if only for the first 6 ozzy albums. it's not like the other stuff is bad but those first few albums are classic. everything just works. a perfect example of a band that becomes far more than the sum of its parts.

led zeppelin - if anyone neeRAB an explanation as to why this band makes the majority of top 10 rock lists they need to get their head checked. sure they're responsible for a whole lot of the crap that came after them but they weren't the ones making crap.

the gandharvas - the easiest way to describe this band is canada's jane's addiction. it's not very accurate though. there's a lot of similarities between the vocalists for both groups and i doubt Paul Jago would deny Perry Farrel's influence. the rest of the band is good but it's very much the singer's show.

jane's addiction - yeah i basically double up the spots here. unlike the gandharvas, the rest of the band doesn't just sit back and support the vocalist. the multiple comeback attempts not withstanding this band's first 2 major releases are most definitely worth checking out at least once.

radiohead - from boring me to tears with their first singles before offering a glimpse of awesome with 'just' then completely obliterating the public perception of the band with 'OK computer' they're one of those banRAB that really found a way to do its own thing. they were able to see the scene for what it was, and were able to play along to its rules for long enough to learn how to manipulate it to allow them their own set of rules.

red hot chili peppers - monstrously influential in the 90s. not so much with their releases but through the interviews they provided to the public and their fans. even after i lost interest in the band post californication i still try to get my hanRAB on their interviews as i know flea will ALWAYS have something worth reading to say, and someone worth listening to recommend.

soundgarden - another throwback to my youth but whatever. unlike most alternative banRAB of the day this band actually did sound different from the norm. the rhythms were all over the place, there were as many if not more bass solos on their first album than guitar solos, the tunings on their instruments gave them fresh new voices. the only thing 'generic' about the band was cornell's wail which is really the only thing that anchored them in rock music.

josh homme - all his banRAB are worthy in my eyes. kyuss for bringing back the sabbath style. the desert sessions as an example of the best way to do multiple side projects (i'm looking at you jack white and your 'new' banRAB). the eagles of death metal brought more fun than was legal in about 28 states back to rock music. and the queens of the stone age... well. yeah

mike patton - is pretty much tied for 1st. from mr. bungle's early spastic funk metal that made the 80s chili pepper's seem tame. to the straight ahead power of faith no more's straight ahead rock show. to the incredibly dark and heavy fantomas. the supergroup of so-called no names in tomahawk. even the one shot experiements like loveage, general patton vs. the x-ecutioners, and peeping tom aren't bad. the solo albums are odd but interesting. his collaborations with the dillinger escape plan are awesome, same with his work with john zorn. he's most definitely top of my pile of living people.... which leaves room for one more in this list...
