I think anybody would be very hard pressed to find a group out there that sounded as good as they did when the more or less started (an impossibility for many as they got old, I know) but as you say commercialism and earning money, largely takeover from the creative element in favour of dishing out stuff that they know will probably sell.

In fact the only group that I can think of, that sound as good as when they first started is Dream Theater (hahaha just had to stick that one in as I know they have many fans on this forum:tramp
