I'll have to preface this post to say that I've considered many, many, many characters but ultimately my primary criteria came down to overall character development throughout the series. This meant that my scope often got limited to key or main heroes in a series since a lot of focus was put into their development.

Here's my list:

  • Captain N (Captain N: The Game Master): Captain N, aka Kevin Keene certainly has the least amount character development of my list, but he certainly deserves to be on the list. He's the only character I chose from the 80s because he's one of those true fiction heroes you have to love. He was always clam, cool and collected. Whenever the world was in danger, he was always there to save it.

  • Superman (Superman TAS): Superman is a very iconic character in the US. His symbol represents strength and protection. As a character, he was very well developed by Tim and Dini through the Superman: TAS. As his character development throughout that series as well as JLU, we slowly that he originally was the hero because he loved helping people, but later, he remained a hero to prove to the world that a person can truly be good without some sort of hidden agenda. To me, Clark Kent brings home a message that the world can be a better place if we try to be truthful to everyone around us.

  • Matrix (Reboot): Enzo Matrix may be one of the characters on this list that evolved the most throughout the his series. He started off as a pre-adolescent lucky-go carefree kid. Circumstances forced him to grow up real fast. He became something of a bounty hunter to bring home the one man who could save his home; Bob. The trials and tribulations Matrix went through to save his mentor, best friend, and would be brother in law.

  • Terry McGinnis (Batman Beyond): I have to admit, if I were to base Terry completely on Batman Beyond alone, he probably wouldn't make my top 10 list. It's the episode Epilogue in JLU that really pushed him into the top 10. Terry is a character that had a large cape to fill. Beginning the series as a down trotted thug on his last string and evolving to be the protector of the city is certainly a remarkable turn around.

  • Heero Yuy (Gundam Wing): Crashing down from space, hijacking an ambulance and threatening to kill someone who invited you to their birthday all in the first episode? Yea, Heero Yuy certainly grabbed your attention from the get go. Heero's saw a great improvement throughout the series though. He evolved to show that under that perfect soldier mentality he was actually a very kind person.

  • Serena Tsukino (Sailor Moon): Serena has to be one of the characters on this list that has evolved the most. She went from a cry baby to excepting the true nature of her heritage and saving the universe. Just the difference between seeing her for the first time to seeing her final fight with Queen Barreyl really showed evolution that was so extreme it was like the difference between the darkest night and the brightest day. Beyond that, her depth of compassion is almost unfathomable. This is easily seen best during the final bout with Mistress Nine.

  • Naruto Uzimaki (Naruto): Naruto, much like Serena had a lot of room to grow. He started out as the laughing stock of his peers and evolved into the would be savior of his village while all along chasing the dream of becoming Hokage. His drive has inspired many along his way including some that could have been mortal enemies, such as Gaara.

  • Light Yagami (Death Note): The depth of Light's character is just something never seen in animation before. He's a character who has literally knowingly signed his death certificate for the ability to attempt to clean up the world. He is both the good guy and the bad guy in the series which makes for a very fun and very suspenseful thriller.

  • Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass): Like Light, Lelouch has practically sold his soul for a power that allows him take control of the destiny of the world. Unlike the world of Death Note, the world in Code Geass has been largely consumed by an oppressive empire. For the sake of his little sister, Lelouch embarks on a personal war against his father. He ultimately sacrifices himself to bring about a world where his sister can prosper.

  • Yusuke Urameshi (YuYu Hakusho): Yusuke is another would be life time thug that was given a chance to make something of his life when he, out of no where demonstrates a strong sense of good by loosing his own life saving a child. How many series REALLY start with the main character dead? Throughout the series we really see Yusuke evil from a punk kid to a full blown hero. The depth of his growth is seen when his mentor, Genkai dies and leaves Yusuke to fight the good fight.
Note worthy Series (No Characters for this poll):

  • Justice League: There's a lot of good characters and good character development throughout the series. Ultimately I decided not to include anyone from this series. There were great characters in it, but the simple fact is I don't think we saw nearly enough character development to justify a top 10 rating.
  • Batman TAS: Obviously a master piece and I'm sure we'll see a lot of Bruce Waynes / Batmans on this list, but Batman was never one of my favorite characters.
  • Dragonball / Z / GT: There's a ton of good characters in this series but I tend to think ULTIMATELY some of the characters got stretched out too far that the characters became too predictable as the various series treked on.
  • Bleach: DBZ factoring is causing the same problems with this series.
  • Super Mario Bros Super Show / 3 / World: I highly considered throwing Mario on the list. Even though he's a long time favorite character, there just wasn't enough depth to the characters in the series.
  • The Real Ghostbusters: I thought about trying to work one of the Real Ghostbusters in sine the series was so well done. The truth is I really dont see any signifigant quality that holds one character above the other.

Well I sent you a P.M but I'll write it here too, could be some changes though. Depends on what I watch I guess :)
10. Iago-Aladdin: I was a fan of this guy forever, he just cracked me up with every thing he said and did. He had some great character development too from Return of Jafar, switching sides, was very diffacult for him to do. You got to really see why we should feel bad for him, that Jafar guy was pretty evil.

9. Speed Jr-Speed Racer Next Generation: He's got a good heart, good racing skills and a sense of humor. He's pretty smart when it comes to stopping evil villains, some how always gets into trouble. I enjoy watching his every day adventures, fun :)

8. Yusei Fudo-Yugioh 5D: He's got to be my favorite of the Yugioh main characters on Yugioh. I just love his character model, very cool looking. He knows kung-fu, can take down a man very fast. He's shown fear and doesn't just duel on luck, love his deck too. He's just awesome.

7. Little Yugi-Original Yugioh: Every one always says the pharo is the best, while that guy is awesome too I can't help but to like this guy more. He's not too serious, still does a good duel and is a bit comical.

6. Gohan-Dragon Ball Z: I think this guy was my first ever favorite anime character. I just loved every thing about this guy, he really amazed me in the Cell saga.

5. Zorpox-Kim Possible: I love Ron, but Zorpox for me is better in a way. I love his evil laugh, how he was made in Bad Boy, he didn't start out evil right away but developed slowly and went blue and evil. It was pretty fun to watch. Than he came back in Stop Team Go, dispite his small return he was still the best thing in that episode, made it an epic win. We got to see his mad monkey kung-fu skills in action on the villain, his mockery of her was awesome too. I just wish they'd have given him a TV movie, that would have been a much better way to end the show than what we got. I still enjoyed the ending though.

4. Dark Danny-Danny Phantom: Hey'll always be in my top spot. Every thing about him is just brilliant. I like Danny Fenton/Phantom too but this guy out beat him, his evilness was just too much fun. I loved the way he looked and the guy who did his voice was another plus. Even though it was just one TV movie, the people behind it did a good job. Like Zorpox I wish we'd gotten more, but oh wells, still fun to watch when I can.

3. Stewie Griffin-Family Guy: No matter what, he's always awesome. Whether he's evil, doing kung-fu or using his inventions, this kid is just the best Family Guy character ever. I also love his adventures with Brian, that's another plus.

2. Dale-Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers: This guy cracked me up. I felt bad for him, the way the other rescuers treated him at times. At least this guy new how to have fun, honestly I feel they were just jealous of him

1. Sheen-Adventures of Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius: He's very funny, likes to have fun on adventures while his friends are so serious.

This really wasn't in order, just the way things poped into my head at the times. Also, couldn't fit all the ones I wanted to like the original Ron Stoppable on Kim Possible or Danny Phantom/Fenton or Ben Tennysion from Ben 10 AF. I can't belive I forgot Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, how could I? He's always been a favorite of mine since I was little. Oh well, its too late to chance =/

Wow, there are so many characters and so many different opinions. Are you sure you only want 10?

1. Donald Duck (I've grown up with Donald more than any other cartoon character and I watch his shorts all the time)
2. Scooby-Doo (Scooby-Doo is my favorite show all time and Scooby is one of the best cartoon characters ever)
3. Goofy (Probably the funniest of the Disney characters and that says a lot)
4. Bugs Bunny (What's up dock?)
5. Mickey Mouse (Remember, it all started with a mouse)
6. Yogi Bear
6. Chernabog (Fantasia is my favorite movie and Chernabog is one the most intense villains ever.
8. Top Cat
9. Squidward (My favorite Spongebob character because of his sarcastic attitude and dry humor)
10. Izzy (TDI) (TDI is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows and Izzy is the most entertaining character. Noah is my favorite from the series, but I know that he wouldn't make it anyway. Izzy has a small chance.

I might have changed it if I was picking 20, but I wanted the latter 4 to have a higher chance at making the list.

Lelouch (Code Geass)
C.C. (Code Geass)
Haruhi Suzumiya
Katara (Avatar)
Azula (Avatar)
