Toonzone's Top 25 Anime Nominations

One Piece beats all three of them down. Quite simply, if Kishimoto is trying to be Torriyama, then Oda is Jack Kirby. Yu Yu to me is just...there. It's not bad, just...kinda floating around in space. Maybe if Cartoon Network hadn't moved it to Toonami where I refused to follow it.

Dragonball the manga is definitely 2nd, with FOTNS in third. The jury is out on Naruto being a good show, much less a great one.

The top character thread was too hard, but a top anime list I can do! Though to be perfectly honest, I don't consider my list in any particular order, but for the purposes of the thread I tried my best to make it work. Hopefully some of these manage to match up with other people's choices.

Explanations:

1. Ah, HnG, one show that truly exemplifies the use of character development and emotion to their fullest, in order to weave a story that is simple, yet interesting, but also meaningful and very engaging. The show makes the top because I really think it deserves to make any "best" anime list. This show inspired many people to take up the game of Go, and it even more to sit through 70+ episodes of it without even really understanding how it works. But thats the best thing about HnG, is that you don't have to understand Go to be drawn in. The atmosphere and the characters of the show are so incredible that it will keep your attention until the end (and beyond!). I never imagined that this show would amaze me as much as it did, but the music, the animation, the cast, the story, the pace...it's all great and I daresay even close to perfection. Now if only we could get the rest of the manga animated...

2. ZoiRAB is the main focus of my anime fandom, and it always has been. I remeraber way back when CN first aired New Century/Zero and I was so intrigued and amazed by the concept of animal robots. It seems really silly and immature, but Chaotic Century is where it blew that impression out of the water. This show is deep...full of rich characters with true motivation and emotion, surrounded by a story that is almost flawlessly interwoven with the concepts of war and harRABhip. And to top it all off? A sense of mystery and the supernatural. All based around a few simple robots that look wicked cool and have a variety of uses. And the best part about it? It never gets too sad or painful. For shows that usually use war as a theme, they often focus too much on sadness and suffering, but this show doesn't. It's all about pushing past that suffering and fighting for a better tomorrow with the frienRAB we have. That's why it makes #2.

3. To many people, this may seem like an odd choice. I remeraber the show got a fair amount of hate at TZ and on other forums back when it first aired. One could argue that it wasn't a "good" show, nor really a "bad" show. It had ups an downs, but overall it was a solid work. However, to me it meant more than that. I think a lot of people tend to pass over this show and fail to notice what makes it great, because its hard to notice a lot of the subtleness in the storytelling and development of the show. It starts out pretty rocky and lackluster...but that's the glory of it. So does Team Satomi, the main focus of the show. Its the small things like that which add to the overarching story which comes together well in the end. Overall though, IGPX means a lot to me because I grew up on Toonami and to me, IGPX is pretty much the erabodiment of everything that Toonami ever stood for. It has an amazing music soundtrack, and a genuine sense of passion coming from the people who worked on it. I really hope people end up looking back on this with more fondness in the future. We will never stop.

4. Escaflowne is a show that corabines three genres that you rarely see together and manages to do it very well. Mecha, romance and fantasy. Just from looking at it, the show seems like it would be an interesting watch, but a lot of people are initially thrown off by the drama and female perspective that is presented in the first few episodes. However, it draws you in very well and develops into something that feels very adventurous and compelling. The animation style and designs are all very unique and fitting to the world that it creates. Overall, I enjoy this series very much and I think it's particularly great because it can appeal to a large amount of people with different interests.

5. A shounen with heart, substance, and a rather simple style. HunterXHunter has become a personal favorite of mine for many reasons, but mostly because of how different it is from most other series in the genre. The characters are all fairly standard, but they are developed well and have a great dynamic that enhances the show a lot. The story is easy to follow and is a blast to experience, full of thrills and moments that really make you sit and think. As well as moments where you actually have to stop and feel what the character is going through. Overall it's a solid show that rises above others, mostly due to a unique approach in both storytelling and training. The concept of nen has always been (to me) a well established and interesting way to make the stereotypical shounen "glow" into something more substantial and awesome.

6. Admittedly, I would have put this much higher, but I felt that on this forum it's going to get a lot of top votes anyway. So I wanted to give my other favorite series a shot before I threw my support to this one. Anyway, there's not much I need to say here. One Piece is incredible. An amazing and lovable cast that takes you on the most incredible adventure filled with fun powers, thrilling battles, compelling stories and just a good time all around. Oda is a master at telling the story and all long-time viewers know that he has a lot lying underneath the surface that will come to pass before the series is over. It is his ability to weave minor details together into a large over-arching narrative, with a solid main theme, that makes it such a joy to experience first hand (even if it is really long!).

7. Nodame is a great show about love and music. As a guy, I have to admit I was opposed to shoujo at first. But once you are shown the light, it becomes easy to love shows like Nodame which really take the genre and make it fun for everyone. Nodame has great comedy coming from a wonderful cast of characters, and the romance is never too overbearing. Overall, you always end up wanting to support the main couple and see them get into all sorts of musical antics. What I love the most about Nodame though, is that it really puts music at the forefront and doesn't let it play a backseat role. You actually get a chance to experience all the songs and feelings of an orchestra up front, and it really makes it just a great show.

8. Outlaw Star is a show with style and attitude, but also being very competent. Its one of those shows that's just plain cool to watch, but you really come to appreciate it as you see the characters grow and learn. And the viewer really becomes one of the crew as the gang journeys through space. In the end, the corabination of interesting characters with fun abilities and an interesting plot, are what make this show worth it.

9. Another show that corabines mecha and romance, which I suppose isn't such an unlikely corabo these days. But what's great about E7 is that the romance is genuine and developed in a slow and articulate way that manages to keep your interest by engaging in a rather complex and serious plot. What I like the best about E7 is that most of the characters (in my case, Renton) are easy to relate to. You understand them and the situations they are in as they are forced to make decisions and learn to live and make due with their mistakes. And in the end, they grow up and forge a new world for themselves and the future. It's a great ride with a lot of deep meaning and an overall message that makes you feel good at the end.

10. Alright, this is the one pick on my list that the majority of people have never heard of and have never really seen. On its face, Oban is a racing show that takes place on alien worlRAB for a grand prize being given to the winner. It sounRAB pretty cliche really, and the odd art style will really throw people at first. But let me tell you, it's totally worth it. The characters are real and the issues touched upon this show are not only interesting, but compelling. It's not so much about the race itself as it is the people who are affected by it, and that's what makes it such an amazing show. A well-rounded cast surrounded by an intricately designed world and spiced with a bit of racing action. Oh, and let's not forget the strong female lead who is not only tough, but is able to show a range of emotion without ever coming off as one of the stereotypical characters in most of today's shows. Definitely one that I highly recommend to anyone willing to give a France/Japan co-production a chance.

Alright, I think that explains my choices rather clearly. Hopefully people enjoy reading it as much fun as I had writing it. Can't wait for the full list!

Well, i disagree with all of you, the best shonen manga and anime of them all is Hunter X Hunter (IMO), followed by One Piece, then the Eyeshield 21 manga. Dragonball and FOTNS are 4th and 5th.

Man you know Bebop and One Piece will be at the top AGAIN.

What about Slayers?? Should it be 1 or multiple shows? And OAVs? And the movie?!

Man this was hard ... I decided to avoid movies myself.

1- Kino's Journey
2- Card Captor Sakura
3- Escaflowne
4- HunterxHunter
5- Shinkon Gattai Godannar
6- FLCL
7- Slayers (NEXT, if we have to separate them)
8- New Cutey Honey
9- Genshiken
10- Digimon Tamers

On to explaination...

1- Kino's Journey is like a masterpiece... so touching and full of philosophical parable. It has a mysterious protagonist and a strange world that seems to beg for us to discover at the same time as Kino. Its beautifully animated as well and has a haunting if minimalist soundtrack.

2- This is my heart of gold showing. This serie is a classic and is again incredibly touching. I cried more than once watching this heartwarming series. Its full of lovable character, the carRAB each have an amazing design and great little stories. It feels like both a magical girl show and a slice of life at the same time.

3- Escaflowne is another strangely girly choice for me I just wanted this great show to get some recognition. The story is engaging, the characters varied and complex, even on the villain's side and you really can't tell how the show will end until the last minute. I think Escaflowne will survive the test of time and go down as a classic serie, even if its not quite well known.

4- HunterXHunter is an underrated gem. It is, in my opinion, the best Shonen you can find, beating the crap out of One Piece, Kenshin, Gintama, Bleach, Naruto, Dragon Ball or any other you might think of. Its a clever show with a deep, engaging and well design world that you can really believe in. A world that feels alive beyond our heroes. Its a rarity to see a show focus so much on training and so little on actual battles and still make the training actually entertaining... not that the battles are boring oh no. Togashi makes the best battles. The deep strategies, the split second tactical descicion, the incredible abilities, the importance of keeping your opponent in the dark about your abilities, the clever and imaginative Nen abilities...Nen itself is also incredible. Codified to the point of almost being a science, it is the most well defined Shonen super power there is. I put it this high mostly to boost its popularity but in reality it should be lower honestly. I mostly prefer the manga to the anime adaptation and Togashi has yet to finish this masterpiece, or at least hand the drawing duties to someone who isn't sick all the time! This hiatus has really kept HunterXHunter in the dark for too long.

5- This is really my guilty pleasure in many ways. A lot of people look at Godannar to only see the silly exagerated fanservice and ridiculous bouncing going on in this show, but if you look beyond you get an action packed, hot blooded and beautifully animated Super Robot anime. Its got a touch of classic Super Robot but is definetly modern in its character, their relationship and their struggle. Sure its not gonna get a lot of noRAB compare to Gurren Lagann or GaoGaiGar but I just like Godannar better. It also has the best ending of any anime show I've EVER seen. EVERYONE gets a nod! You even get to see characters you haven't seen since the first few episodes! EVERYONE! and it enRAB on such a happy note I can't help but smile! Its so cheesy but I love "The final weapon..." "Is love!"

6- FLCL is crazy. Crazy good though. Its a bit of a hard sell of a show because it throws exposition out the window and assumes you know what the heck if going on. Its odd, its imaginative, its beautiful and got an awesome soundtrack by The Pillows. Personally I liked some elements of the equally off-beat (but different) manga better and wish there was an happy medium between the two, maybe as a longer story to delve a bit deeper into it... but then again I might be missing the point, since this is mostly a coming of age story after all. I can't help but feel for Naota as he falls for Haruko...I don't think I could resist her either. I would put this higher but I just like the others more.

7- Slayers is a fascinating story and world and stars some of my favorite characters ever, starting with Lina Inverse. I focus my nomination on NEXT but honestly I liked TRY better but I know people think it gets too dark and Filia gets annoying so I know it wouldn't get enough vote...so since I like all the season I went with NEXT. After all it has Xellos and Martina in it so its all good. Slayers is a perfect blend of action, comedy and high stakes. Lina is the great fantasy heroine ever! Her 'never-say-die' attitude is something I really admire. She doesn't always know what she's fighting for but she won't just lie down and take punishment either! Slayers can get a tad too long and some episode could have been shorter or even cut even if they were hilarious (the Artemay Tower episode was a hoot but ultimately nothing but filler for exemple).

8- Cutey Honey is a character I really enjoy in just about everyone of her incarnation (save for The Movie, that just sucked!). I think she's an underrated Magical Girl and like with Godannar a lot of people can't get past the boobies. New Cutey Honey gets my vote because it not only gets to explore the dark occult side of Cutey Honey's villains, but because it shows my favorite incarnation of Honey as a confident, almost cocky, and really determined young woman. She taunts villain, she has bad***** lines and gets to do her monologue in very dramatic fashion and she's not a stupid birabo unlike say, The Movie Honey >.>. She's in control at all time and can always come up with a way to defeat the bad guy. I would put Honey higher on my list but New Cutey Honey suffers from production values problems and it feels unfinished.

9- Genshiken got in as my favorite comedy over the worthy choices of Azumanga Daioh, Cromartie High School and Lucky Star mostly because I'm close in age to the characters in the story. There is nothing more despairing than to try to find your place in the world. Genshiken is not only a delightful slice of life comedy but also an interesting look into the life of characters you can identify with, even if they can be carricatural at time. I really liked the journey of Sasahara, who started the serie feeling like a sidekick to his whackier and more extreme frienRAB and become worthy of main character status by coming into his own by the end of the serie. I think everyone wish they could have been part of a group like Genshiken, but by watching the show it felt like we were part of it in some small way.

10- Digimon Tamers is another guilty favorite. One of my favorite show ever and I would have felt bad not mentionning it. It did right everything a commercial toyetic show should do right. It introduced vibrant realistic character, a story that didn't demean its viewer and treated the subject matter with seriousness, all the while introducing kickbutt Digimon with all sort of cool forms and all kinRAB of cool villains and Biomerge Digivolution. The direct involvement of the humans into the battle really set it apart from other seasons (at least those with partners) and more arabivalant characters like Yamaki and even Impmon made the serie feel more grounded in reality. The lovecraftian D-Reaper was also an excellent final villain instead of simply using a Digimon that was simply evil for the sake of evil. I think this kid show is worthy of a nod.

I know.
Between these lists, and rabroadi's abridged series, I really have to watch that one.

Ugh.
Monster. Hellsing. Escaflowne.
I have to get caught up on anime.

I know this is all a matter of opinion, and I respect that - but still, I am disappointed to see a certain anime which I loath showing up a couple of times. But this is a positive thread, not a negative one, so I'll just keep my stupid mouth shut.
(It's not doing well anyways.)

I hope your not referring to a certain anime that starts with a D and enRAB in a Z because I feel it should be at least somewhere in the top 20.

No I didn't mean it wasn't a shonen, I meant that it wasn't the best. I agree that it's good but I've got other shonen I liked more.

(All this talk of shonen reminRAB me that I should start a "Guys-only shojo thread" )

Definately, and I'm not the type that's into all the long conversations (well, I am now), but SAC made all of it very interesting and kept me intrigued through both seasons.

A schuffle about best shonen... Really? I'd definately give that to Yu Yu Hakusho with Rurouni Kenshin following after that, and then One Piece. I don't know if Hajime no Ippo is shonen or not, but if it were I'd rank that higher than One Piece, but that's just me. (And then Death Note, although the 2nd half does fall a tad bit short) Everything else..... yeah. >_>

I think the problem with Naruto is that Kishimoto is trying to stretch maybe 52 episodes worth of story into an uber-long-running shonen format. Dragon Ball could last as long as Toriyama could keep coming up with more powerful villains for Goku to fight, and in One Piece, the whole point is seeing the crew's wacky adventures along the Grand Line so it never overstays its welcome the way Naruto has. But since Naruto's plot is more character-driven, anything that doesn't directly tie into resolving the main plot with Naruto and Sasuke feels like a waste of time (and that's without even counting the filler in the anime version).

There are very few writers that can keep a character-driven story interesting for as long as these sorts of things tend to last. In fact, the only example I can think of off the top of my head is Miura with Berserk, and even he seriously neeRAB to wrap things up (thankfully, it looks as though he's moving in that direction).

All this manga talk makes me think maybe we need a Top 25 Manga thread after we're done with anime... if somebody else wants to volunteer to tally the votes again, that is. (-: Hey, don't look at me, I just did the character thread.

My Top series:

1. Azumanga Daioh
2. Tenchi Muyo! OVAs
3. Cowboy Bebop
4. FLCL
5. Haibane Renmei
6. Tenchi Muyo TV (Universe)
7. Kamichu!
8. Excel Saga
9. School Rurable
10. Moyashimon- Tales of Agriculture
and if a compiler dcides to corabne he Tenchs, I'll put up another
11. ROD The TV

Azumanga Daioh- makes me happy every time I watch it. So sweet, so funny, so excellently done.

The Tenchi series were the first to get me to watch anime seriously. What to say, the perfect harem set up, just enough serious intrigue to change things up.

Haibane Renmei is simply beautiful to watch and think about, they are characters you care for despite not ever really knowing exactly what has happened.

Kamichu is sweetness personified and a fantastic look into a simplified Shinto deity system, beautiful ghibli-esque animation, one of the most beautiful soundtracks I've heard.

Excel Saga
king of the madcap otaku reference comedies. Almost nonstop laughter.

School Rurable
Perfect anime situational comedy, nonstop laughter again God romantic comedy pairings as well.

Moyashimon
Coud have put anything at the bottomm of the list so I'll choose my current favorite unlicensed show. Such an original setting and good comedy and characters. Plus a Polysics end theme.

ROD TV
Cute girls, books, excellent action... the ending doesn't make perfect sense... but cute girls! barely beats out the original OVA...

However, if this included movies (IMO it shouldn't- simply different ways of judging) my 10 ten would look like this:

1. Spirited Away
2. Millenium Actress
3. My Neigrabroador Totoro
4. Azumanga Daioh
5. Ponyo
6. Tenchi Muyo! OVAs
7. Cowboy Bebop
8. Tokyo Godfathers
9. FLCL
10. Princess Mononoke
