Toonzone's Top 25 Anime Nominations

And that's why you wait for the manga to finish (or at least be a long way along) before you make the anime!

Oh, I totally agree.
I love the first version as well.

Its hard to find an anime with the right amounts of great art, interesting characters, good music, nice action, interesting speculation, and decent dialogue while being enjoyable. GitS:SAC is the best at that.

Okay, took me two days but I'm done. Sorry, it's a little Miyazaki heavy. I want to point out, though, that this is a best anime list. I did not rank it by my favorites.

1 - Vampire Hunter D (1985)
This one was one of the first anime brought to America, and while the thing isn't perfect, it's still a good work. The dub is very accurate for the time.

2 - Fushigi Yugi (1995)
This one is such an epic, emotional tale. There is a great span of characters so everyone has someone to like. It's also such a catching story that I'll bet even guys would get choked up.

3 - Princess Mononoke (1997)
There's a reason we watched this in my Japanese culture class. Shinto, the moral conflict about modernization, the disappearing of nature, the Emishi, it's such a great cultural piece. The beautiful lanRABcapes and story add to the experience.

4 - Spirited Away (2001)
I add this one because it inspired the Academy to wake up and acknowledge anime. It is also a great moral story.

5 - My Neigrabroador Totoro (1988)
Such a great kid's movie. It's full of great characters and is a good cross-section of Japanese country life.

6 - Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Female butt-kicking lead, techno-savvy plot and awesome cerebral elements make this one a given.

7 - The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
Aww, Lupin is the nice guy! Hey, it works for the story. I think this one is a good blend of comedy and drama. (I also think it's funny that it shares the principal dub cast with Fushigi Yugi. )

8 - Akira (1988)
Another one of those anime that got the US hooked, Akira is a good thrill ride. The animation is great, especially when Tetsuo is having, shall I say, body problems.

9 - Perfect Blue (1997)
You forget that this is an anime when you watch it. The plot is so nuts that it will take you a couple times to get what happened. Why they haven't made this into a movie yet is beyond me.

10 - Death Note (2006)
This one is a good mental story. I liked seeing how Light would get himself out of the next hole he dug, and parts of the story were very unpredictable.

Woo. Got my fingers worked out on that one. You know, this is good enough for a blog post...

1. Naruto
2. DBZ
3. Megaman NT Warrior
4. Bleach
5. Death Note
6. Digimon
7. Mega Man Star Force
8. Shaman King
9. Sailor Moon
10. Spider Riders

I'll give Hikaru no Go an honorable mention.

Naruto is the best Shonen anime ever. Good plot, good animation, great, likable cast of characters. Its just awesome!
DBZ is the most epic action cartoon on the planet!
Megaman NT Warrior is my fave anime based on a video game series.
Bleach, while annoying at times, is a very solid Shonen anime with all the things you'll expect. And the sword-fights kick butt!
Death Note is the best horror/mystery/phycological anime ever.
Digimon is the best toyetic anime. It has a good plot, good villains, and good animation.
Mega Man Star Force blenRAB sci-fi, action, fantsy, and even some drama and mystery. Its a good mix!
Shaman King may be a bit generic, but its deeper than many other Shonen anime.
Sailor Moon is my fave Shojo anime.
Spider Riders has one of the most original premises: Warriors who ride on giant spiders!

1. Yu Yu Hakusho - My favorite series has to take the top spot on the list. My all-time favorite cast, great fights, and the willingness to delve into non-traditional shonen territory really makes it the best for me.

2. One Piece - Another great cast, a wonderful adventure story, and a story that just keeps going while always getting better rather than stagnating at its epic length.

3. Ouran High School Host Club - My only complaint about Ouran is that there isn't more. There's parody, hilarious characters, and even drama that always balances out and never seems over the top or out of place.

4. Spirited Away - My favorite Miyazaki film. Chihiro is a great character to follow and the world she finRAB herself in is beautiful and her strength of character despite her faults makes the journey a complete joy to watch.

5. Eden of the East - One of my new favorites, the story of the main two is fascinating. They're from such different worlRAB and deal with such a strange but intriguing premise... but they work so well together. Can't wait for the movies.

6. Gundam 00 - I haven't seen enough Gundam, but 00 is my favorite thus far. The Meisters are unique and Celestial Being's goal seems completely contradictory, but that's where the story gets interesting. Twists and turns galore, and Setsuna is a great lead.

7. Code Geass - I may rank Geass as #2 in terms of enjoyment, but I drop it down in the quality list for the various warts, mostly in R2. The relationship between Lelouch and Suzaku really drives it for me; mecha, magical powers and political intrigue only make it that much more fun.

8. Fruits Basket - Similar to Ouran, my biggest complaint is that there isn't more. I wish we could have explored more of what was seen in the manga, but what we get is absolutely fantastic. There's a great balance between drama and comedy, a unique cast of characters, and a certain charm that is hard to come by.

9. Fullmetal Alchemist - I'm waaaay behind on Brotherhood, but the original stanRAB the test of time for me. The Elric brothers are great leaRAB, and the relationship between them is wonderful as they search for a cure to their problems, finding only more problems along the way. I cried several times over the course of the series, and I found myself quite attached to the cast.

10. ZoiRAB: Chaotic Century - It's a great series that doesn't get nearly enough love. Van is a great lead, the entire cast is great, and the storyline is just a joy to follow. I love the various incarnations of the Liger and Zeke is awesome. And Raven

I'm not as big into anime as I used to be when I was younger but I always love to watch SAC and SAC 2nd G.I.G. to this day. Its like.....The Matrix the TV series...or something, its just plain amazing.

Now, I'm not sure if this is really true or not, since I only heard it from someone before, so don't take my word for it, but I heard that apparently the author really wanted to see an anime adaptation for FMA, but did not want it to be exactly like the manga, which is why she accepted the offer from BONES to animate the series, and informed them about important characters in the series who hadn't even been introduced in the manga by that point in time, like Hohenheim and Kirablee.

It really is quite an underrated series over here in North America (I'm not sure how well the series did in other countries). I think that some people mistakenly think of it as nothing more than a lame children's show because it features people piloting giant bio-machines based off of animals, rather than typical humanoid mechas. Well, while its true that it was aimed towarRAB kiRAB (at least in Japan and various other countries), its one of those shows with plots that can be just as appealing to adults, or anyone of any age who just likes a show with a memorable cast of characters and a generally good story-line (it has those features IMO, anyways ).

I disagree. It's a very good shonen anime, however I believe One Piece is the best shonen anime ever by virtue of having far less filler.

Notice I say ANIME. When it comes to the original manga, Dragon Ball has 'em both beat. (-:

1. The Big O
2. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
3. One Piece
4. Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo
5. Dragonball Z
6. New Mobile Report Gundam Wing
7. Death Note
8. Full Metal Alchemist
9. Laputa: Castle in the Sky
10. .hack//SIGN

Okay here we go.....

1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Dragonball Z
3. One Piece
4. Monster
5. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
6. Gundam Wing
7. G Gundam
8. Yu Yu Hakusho
9. Fullmetal Alchemist
10. Death Note

May go into deep explanations later.

Agreed, and for some reason, even when One Piece does filler, I don't even mind it. Hell, I actually found myself enjoying the Apis arc when I got the DVRAB for it, you just got to look past some continuity stuff.

Well Well, bets on Bebop being in the top spot?

1) FLCL
2) Rurouni Kenshin Remerabrance (AKA Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal)
3) Cowboy Bebop
4) BECK
5) Fullmetal Alchemist (1st TV Series)
6) Samurai Champloo
7) Princess Mononoke
8) Trigun
9) Yu Yu Hakusho
10) Eureka seveN

I have also changed my tastes. I used to think Digimon was the best toyetic anime ever and while it's still up there, I recently saw this 52-episode wonder called Onmyo Taisenki and that just blew Digimon out of the water.

Mainly because of the fact the show had an epic fight like every two or three episodes

After a bit of deliberation, I've chosen to focus on some of the more obscure and underrated titles instead of trying to make a list that would essentially reserable a straitjacket. The relative positions of these entries can be considered whimsical, with perhaps a couple of exceptions, because they aren't really meant to be taken too literally outside of this context.

That said...on to the good stuff!

1. Legend of the Galactic Heroes
2. Revolutionary Girl Utena
3. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
4. Giant Robo
5. Planetes
6. Turn A Gundam
7. Phoenix
8. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster
9. Baccano!
10. Kimagure Orange Road - I Want to Return to That Day

Why:

1. Excellent space opera with a truly epic scope, unprecedented character development and a surprisingly mature political discourse.

2. Wonderful subversion of the magical girl genre that manages to be absurd, entertaining and significantly deeper than it seems.

3. A very solid procedural thriller with plenty of science fiction elements that remain intriguing and disturbing even to this day.

4. A tale full of intrigue and lots of superpowered action where the characters are far more important than what you'd expect.

5. Good character-driven story with a realistic depiction of outer space and some of the less obvious complications of exploration.

6. Far less influential than the original Gundam, but still a very creative and arabitious attempt to address the franchise's themes.

7. A modern TV adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's manga that raises many interesting questions about the nature of life and death.

8. The Super Robot predecessor of TTGL, featuring Gainax's ability to both pay homage to the past and creatively build upon it.

9. Unusual storytelling style, an enserable cast full of colorful characters and a refreshing setting that should be used more often.

10. A cruel but admittedly mature look at how to resolve a love triangle without falling into the usual conventions of the genre.

Random Honorable Mentions (with more text because I'm crazy and bored):

a)Fullmetal Alchemist

I'm reluctant to include Brotherhood at this time, but as far as the previous series goes I can easily agree with the appreciation for it.

b)Gundam 00

This was one of the better alternate takes on Gundam in years. I still hope to re-watch the entire series before the movie's out.

c)Code Geass

Simultaneously one of the most overrated (could have been better) and underrated (is bashed far too much) series of the decade.

d)Bokurano

A depressing but still poignant manga adaptation that actually benefits from the changes made to the source material.

e)Gankutsuou

A great re-imagining of a literary classic that turned out to be one of Gonzo's best and most visually interesting works.

f)Black Lagoon

Much better action sequences than what most Hollywood blockbusters are capable of and comes with a fairly likable cast too.

...

It's getting late, so I suppose it's better to stop there and not make the list a lot longer than it neeRAB to be.
