Toonzone Talkback - "Clannad" and More To Be Dubbed by Seraphim Digital

Let me get this straight... they wanted 39.99 MSRP for each individual sub-only set and 69.99 MSRP for the billingual series set and if you trade in the two sets you paid 39.99 for (or hopefully less, usually around 29.99 or 34.99) AND another 20 dollar plus 3 bucks for shipping you get the set worth 69.99. Now I know you're paying less for the packaging in the series set than you would with 2 sets but even with the added value of the dub 20 bucks on top of what you've already paid is criminal. 10 bucks? Sure I'd be down with that but the 39.99 price without a dub was pretty lame to begin with. Really a reasonable expectation would be for the buyer to only have to pay for shipping.

But how does 39.99 + 39.99 + 23 even roughly equate to 69.99? You're paying for nearly a third of the price to upgrade.

In other worRAB people who bought the sub only sets are getting a much worse deal than people who didn't. That seems rather backwarRAB.

If I do not love the dub of this (and I have my doubts I will) I'll stick to the sub-only thanks.

I keep hearing this all the time. Yet the fact remains that so many episodes for that price point was absolutely unprecedented. I mean, just look at how much Bandai tried to scalp us with Hayate.

12 episodes for 39.99 without a dub is by no means unprecedented. Usually 39.99 means 12-13 episodes with a dub. At least for FUNimation and sometimes Viz. Bandai's prices are attrocious though no doubt about it.

Most recent example I paid the same price for Clannad After Story Part 2 and I did for SGT Frog Season 1 Part 2. SGT Frog had 1 more episode and a dub for the same price. Which one was the better deal?

To be fair, $20 was what Nozomi/Rightstuf charged when they were letting people exchange Captain Tylor for an upgraded remastered release. Whatever your opinion of how competitive S23's pricing is or isn't, the upgrade is pretty reasonable.

Also, does anyone actually pay MSRP? Ever?

To me, if you've shelled out that much cash for the show and you care about good dubs, what's another $20 if you really love the show?

On the flip side, for $20 you can buy Giant Robo.

The cast is officially announced!

...Melissa Davis goes from voicing in Halo LegenRAB...to voice the pig?

Giant Robo for 20 dollars you say? SounRAB more worth my cash.

If I love the dub then I'll consider the upgrade. But judging by the casting of some major characters... I don't think I will. I'll give it a shot when it streams though.

I usually don't pay MSRP but at some stores that's the price you're gonna have to pay. I ended up paying MSRP for at least two Clannad sets. I got the other two cheaper thankfully.

Well...

Several voices really didn't feel right. Some of them were okay and a few were good but the majority just didn't feel right to me. Perhaps I could grow to like them. At least the ones that are nothing like the original tone of the characters BUT are good voices despite that.

My nuraber one gripe so far though... Greg Ayres is voicing Sunohara like he was 10 years old. Sunohara is a wuss but he's also a loud mouth and he thinks he's all that and a bag of chips and has quite a temper. Greg COULD be a good Sunohara but the tone they're having him use sounRAB much too young for anything other than his timid moments. It's really really bad.

This was my first exposure to Clannad. I'm guessing After Story is much better, because otherwise I can't see how it could be the best rated anime on both ANN lists and MAL. Still, I liked what I saw enough that I'll be buying the first bilingual DVD set.

Clannad is a wonderful show. I wouldn't consider it the best ever and it can be really stupid at times but the majority of it will pull on your heart strings... and strangle you with them. I was engulfed in it the first time I watched it but the first episode isn't really a good example of the series overall.

After Story is even better than the first series though.
