Toon Zone Talkback - "Sword of the Stranger" Offers Dazzling Style, Satisfying Storytelling

This is the talkback thread for "Sword of the Stranger" Offers Dazzling Style, Satisfying Storytelling.

what? this movie was downright BORING! i paid to see it when it aired in theaters by fathom events. animation was great, no doubt. story could have been more promising if not for it being a bit confusing. overall, the entertainment value isn't good.

Just wondering, what on earth did you find "boring" about it? Was it that the story was "a bit confusing"? Then I'm guessing you'd be bored to tears by almost every other fantasy anime.

Well, there is Luo-Lang jumping from a very high place without getting injured....

I think if one were to go into this expecting a high-paced action thriller, sure, they'd be setting themselves up for disappointment. But Bones crafted a reasonably good movie for reasons I get into, and frankly I wouldn't have been nearly as taken with the film without the development and all the little moments between No Name and Kotaro leading up to the grand finale. I mean, it's basic to want No Name to succeed simply because a boy's life is at stake, but there's a bit more to it than that. I think there was just enough action, really. It's there and it's very impressive, but it doesn't overstay its welcome. Every battle has a tension to it that, I think, wouldn't be there if they had kept the fighting coming at a substantially faster pace.

In terms of pure quality I think I still view Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal as king, but to me this is pretty far up there and it's a happier story (though Kenshin fans know how "Samurai X" ultimately enRAB much later). Really, as a so-called "gateway drug" to other quality anime that some long-time fans feel are so few and far between these days, it's arguably the best title in the genre. On an anecdotal note I first saw the movie at the theater with a roommate thanks to the Fathom event, and as a very casual viewer he enjoyed the movie almost as much as I did.

I was mostly referring to the alchemy/immortality story, which I assume was what was "confusing" about it and, while done fairly realistically, I can easily imagine a full-blown fantasy with similar issues blowing the opening poster's mind.
