Toon Zone Talkback - No "Simpsons" Movie Sequel Yet, "Several Years" Left for Series

Last night?s Zombie Simpsons "Oh Brother..." was watched by a mere 7.11 million people. That?s the second lowest number all year and brings the Season 21 average down to a mere 8.23 million viewers. Adding insult to injury, an all new Cleveland Show came in at 7.68 million, which narrows Zombie Simpsons? lead in their utterly meaningless contest to 5-3.
This was also the last new Zombie Simpsons before the big 20th anniversary show in January, that one will have massive promotional hype, Spurlock?s special, and the release of the Season 20 DVDs to promote it. However, right now Season 21 is more than 400,000 viewers, on average, behind Season 20 through the same time and number of episodes last year. Even a massive number for the anniversary show probably won?t be enough to keep Season 21 from being the lowest rated season ever. Huzzah.
 
You're looking at the wrong number. The 3.2 demo was fine (lower than usual, but it is close to Christmas) and the demo is what ad revenue is based off of. Total viewers mean nothing in that regard, that 7.11 million means nothing.

The Simpsons has pulled 4.0s in the demo this season (the 3.2 is lowest of the season but still decent) and it's the third-highest rated show on Fox: http://tvbythenumbers.com/category/renewcancel-fox-shows. Fox being the network leading the big four this season thus far. Compare it to the rest of the shows on TV rather than past seasons.

Erosion each year is happening to all of broadcast TV, and its erosion is pretty minimal compared to the big picture. Desperate Housewives was down 39% partway through the season for God's sake.

The Simpsons brings in *plenty* of ad revenue for first-run episodes.
 
This is my prediction for the future of The Simpsons:

It finally ends when a major cast member dies. The final episode is structured around this character getting laryngitis and then everybody reminiscing about past episodes.

Fox officially hires a replacement VA for whenever they need The Simpsons to speak again, like for a commercial or something. As the other cast members die, they do the same for them.

A decade after The Simpsons ends, Fox premieres "THE NEW SIMPSONS!" which is the exact same thing with the exact same jokes, only with new VAs and a new batch of writers. A decrepit Groening gives the show "his blessing" but is not involved. It only lasts two seasons.

Later, Fox announces a live-action Simpsons movie. It gets mixed reviews but barely makes its own budget back, which means a sequel. A third movie is released directly to whatever replaces Blu-Ray.

Eventually, The Simpsons repeats are taken off the last cable channel showing them, and the only way to see the Golden Age is to buy season sets.
