Toon Zone Talkback - Nick Acquires Rights for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"

Its a shame to see a franchise as popular as TMNT treated in such a manner.

I can only hope Viacom gives the 2k3 series proper DVD sets and makes this new show as high quality as possible.

TMNT has had only one bad show, "The Next Mutation" and that was easy enough to sweep under the carpet as if it never happened, but I don't think I can stomach watching the TMNT franchise being handled poorly.

Every TMNT show deserves to go on for 150-200 eps, and I hope the same here.
 
Seems like Volume 4 has been coming up at a turtle's pace anyway. So not much has changed in that regard but this coming era in which TMNT is no longer helmed by the folks and Mirage leaves a lot of questions to be answered. But for now TMNT can take a little break.
 
I thought that Nick's shows were basically aimed at little kids to begin with.

Anyway, this seriously surprised me. I thought that TMNT would get another series, but I didn't think this soon. I actually see more good things about this situation than bad. For starters, this deal probably helps out 4Kids quite a bit. Since they wouldn't have been able to make a new season/series, they wouldn't be able to make much from the series and the toy sales have been kind of poor lately. Plus, they may still be unable to make a new series when the movie comes out. Considering that their series was never a big hit, the money they got from this deal seems like it would be helpful.

I think that Nick will do a good job with the series. Sure, outside of Avatar, they haven't had that many successful action shows. Nick is better at handling comedy shows. Still, they could make it work on either Nick or Nicktoons. Based on how they handled Avatar, which wasn't perfect but still really awesome, I'm sure that they'll be able to do a good job with this series.

Since Nick will get rerun rights to the 2K3 series, there's also a good chance that they'll re-release that series as well.

The only bad news I do see is with the comics. I've never read the comics myself, but if that is stopping, then I do feel bad for the people who have and enjoyed the comics.

Still, this is shocking, yet awesome, news. I would be up to see another TMNT series and I'm sure that it will be fun.
 
Yep. Even without Volume 4, we were still getting roughly 12-15 TMNT comics every year. We still got 12 issues of Tales of the TMNT, plus a few specials, released every year.

So its not like Volume 4 was the only thing on the comic side of stuff.

But its the end of an era. I just hope TMNT isn't treated like kiddie fair and I would like something similar in tone to the 2k3 series or B:TAS.
 
TMNT has been thought of as a kids' thing for some time now, and even at it's most intense, the 2K3 series has never reached Batman:TAS levels of dark, and I doubt that it will be any darker on Nickelodeon.
 
I'm not following you. How is TMNT being treated poorly? Nick will be airing the reruns of the 2003 series. Most of the 1987 syndicated series is available on DVD, and a new TMNT series will be airing either next year or the following year. How exactly is that "shoddy treatment"?

Dude, there are worse things in life than your favorite show not getting to 200 episodes. You should be thankful for the episodes that we've gotten and be grateful for the opportunity to see them again on Nick.

Ah well, even if Nick does screw up the Turtles there'll always be the 2003 series to remember fondly.
 
Is anyone else worried about the CG aspect of the show? Unless they can make the show look as good as the 4th movie was, I really worry for what the show is going to look like.
 
And by default it never will be. TMNT was created as a spoof of the Frank Miller comics of the early `80s. His work on Daredevil and Ronin in particular. So, at its core, TMNT, has always been tongue n cheeck. Which is why I don't understand why people complain when the franchise has been more light-hearted. It has always been to a certain degree.

It isn't the same with, say, Batman since he was a serious character from the getgo. The character's entire creation was based on DC Comics wanting to repeat the success of Superman. Bob Kane and Bill Finger purposely made Batman the complete opposite. If they had success they didn't want it by being a Superman clone. So, Batman, at its core, has always been a dark and serious character.
 
Look at how amazing The Clone Wars on CN looks. By the time the series premiers 2012 it'll be 4 years old, and technology changes a lot in that time. So yeah you can argue Lucas has the money to make the tv show cg on par with cg movies, but this premiered in 2008, I'm sure it'll look really good.

I think people are thinking the cg will look similar to the pilot but come on, how many years was that, each year cg gets better. Also I was pretty sure the next tv show was going to be cg, it always seemed like Laird was pushing for it, we have two different test footage for a cg show before 2k3 came out and he always mentioned cg a lot. So even without selling I think the next TMNT would have been CG.
 
Like I mentioned TNM gets a bad rap from the fandom and while it has its flaws its not that bad, I personally enjoyed it. It has enough interesting things going for it. If it had been written a little bit better it'd be considered a gem in the fandom. A little too much slapstick but it can be overlooked. I wrote a review a while ago after I got done watching the show here.



Nah, the villains were actually pretty good actually.

Dragonlord and his army The Rank were pretty interesting villains, Vammi was an ancient vampire linked to Venus. Bonesteel was a crazy bounty hunter. Silver was a gangster gorilla and Dr. Quease was basically Baxter Stockman except not evil he did things for science without regard for anything else.

With the exception of Vammi they all had a few comical episodes were they weren't shown as huge threats but they also had episodes were they're portrayed much better and made great/interesting villains in the show.

So yeah they could easily be written to fit the 87 or 2k3 cartoons and pretty much any adaptation of the turtles. I'd love to see them again.




Exactly, when Laird controlled the company it would have never happened but now that he is gone out of the equation its possible.

And theres no legal limbo, AFAIK mirage owned the characters from TNM just not the show.
 
That's an interesting comparison to be sure.

I was rather hoping TMNT 2003 would air on XD but I suppose Nicktoons Network is just as good and maybe we could even see it on Nick proper between now and the time the new series will launch.

But I'm very worried TMNT will go a few seasons (or less) and then Nick will lose interest and then what? They don't sell back properties. TMNT wont be owned by Mirage anymore...

My other concern is since this ends the Mirage comics... Serious gritty Ninja Turtles could very well die with it. Sure Nick might allow the new series to be a bit edgy but we wont have the Mirage comics anymore and I doubt they're going to publish the indie comic or allow anyone else to. This could very well mean TMNT is leaving the comic pages forever outside of children's magazines and that is a truely sad thing to me and probably most TMNT fans.

Laird I suppose is getting on in age and probably able to live comfortably now without the aid of TMNT revenue. Even so, no creator control could be a very bad thing for his and Eastman's baby.

Not that it's neccessarily a bad thing but it's pretty much assured that TMNT will never be the same again.

Turtles Forever not only ends 2K3 and gives homage to the 80s cartoon and the Mirage comics but its the end of the creator's involvement in the franchise. It'll be a whole new ball game now and the possiblity of a cross-over of the previous TMNT series and incarnations may never be again.
 
Worried, no. Curious, yes.

There have been CGI animated TV series before, and many of them have been rendered pretty well-- Reboot, Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Trippin' the Rift, Bratz-- and those shows all debuted years ago. Think of how much CG animation has improved since that time. It would be nice if the new series were able to maintain the kind of CG that we got for TMNT, but that may be too much, but if we at least get something resembling that, that's good enough for me.
