Toon Zone Talkback - Groening on "Simpsons Movie" Sequel

Does Simpsons really need 20 seasons and 2 movies?

I'm not instantly saying "OH, THE MOVIE'S GONNA SUCK" but man. The Simpsons gets more than any other cartoon will ever get a chance for.

If this was Japan, they would've made made a movie years ago.
And then they'd make one every year.

Hopefully this movie will focus more on Bart, Lisa, and other kids.

I agree that the marriage plot of them breaking up due to some mistake homer made is getting rather old rather fast.
One of my favorite episodes was where Bart pulled a huge prank by joining together blowhorns sending a giant shockwave or sound around town..

They could focus it on something like that and the consequences that happen afterword..Or the most obvious choice, do a team up of SideShow Bob and Mr.Burns ;)..

Given the ridiculous amount of money the first one made this isn't surprising at all.

I usually like the episodes where Homer gets a crazy job (like the astronaut one, Spring Shield one, garbage commissioner, and so on) and that could probably carry into a movie pretty well.

When the sequel comes out does that mean the end of the of the series? I think my brother said that he read somewhere that it will end after two movies.

I don't know, after 400 episodes, a movie, and several video games, it's going to be hard to find a plot that hasn't been done to death.

Homer getting a new job, Homer & Marge seperating are the two ideas I DON'T want in a Simpsons movie, unless the 'Homer gets a new job' involves the return of Scorpio.

I mean, in the first movie, we got Homer flipping people off, Bart's penis, and Marge using the G-D word. How do you top those and still keep the movie clean enough for it's audience?

The actors ARE signed for 3 movies, so after the first came out this isn't a surprise.

I just hope they save the last one for the end of the show.

Same here. It's enough that the series has been going on forever, do we really need a bunch of Simpsons movies also?

Movie 3 should rightfully be the series finale, which is what I thought the 1st one was going to be.

Given how insanely popular the 1st movie was, it comes as no surprise to hear that there's going to be a sequel, but really, after hundreds of episodes and 1 movie, what else can they do? They've already done a "save the town/world" storyline last time. Marge and Homer break up? We've seen that also. Homer gets a wacky job? Yup, that too. Homer develops an attachment to an animal? been there, seen that.

I figured Matt would get the go ahead to do a sequel. And you know, maybe the sequel should have Homer get yet another wacky job. Maybe as The President?

We've seen Homer get a wacky job a few times before, but The Simpsons' having been on for over a decade definitely puts a limit on the number of situations that they can do without repeating themselves.

It's not like the movies are done fast, Matt likes to take his own time to prepare things. I hope is as good as the first one... or maybe this time it can revolve around Homer and a New job. I love the Jobs episodes

Hopefully it'll be funnier than the first one. Don't get me wrong I thought the first movie was good plot and emotion wise, but I honestly didn't laugh once.

But don't we have enough of those for episodes in the show itself?
Any who I figure since the first one focoused on Homer maybe the second one can focouse on Bart like what they did with the 90's episodes. Maybe give Homer some sort of a connection to Barts story. Have Sideshow Bob be the main villain or some thing that would be kind of cool. Yah, I though Matt said no sequal after the first movie but whatever.

I'm thoroughly surprised a sequel to TSM and also a cinematic Family Guy flick is greenlit. I mean, even though it has definitely made over 2x its prod. budget, I honestly thought the 1st one was a domestic box office disappointment, as it was the only flick with a $70mil.+ debut weekend to never have crossed $200mil. in North America.

Generally when signing on actors for movies or TV shows, they sign them on for more seasons or movies than necessarily intended "just in case."

It's more about leaving the option of a sequel open rather than actually planning to have two sequels.

The $75 million production budget indicates that they weren't expecting a huge blockbuster in the first place.

It made $526 million worldwide, how in the hell can you call that a disappointment.

I know they didn't expect a huge profit from TSM, but I never said it was a disappointment internationally, now did I? It's only a box office disappointment domestically, because it didn't manage to cross $200mil. domestically despite raking in $70mil.+ on its debut weekend. I mean, if a movie earns over $70mil. on its debut weekend, you'd usually expect a domestic total gross of $200mil.+!
