This is the talkback thread for the pre-release discussion of the new animated series, GI JOE: Renegades. The show is due this fall on October 10 on The Hub network.

ENI has a good report from the panel on what the series will feature.

First season is reported to be 26 episodes with a two part pilot to start.

This will be an origin story for the GI JOE team who are on the run from Cobra Industries who are publicly a "benevolent" organization. So it kind of turns the GI JOE mythos on its head a bit.
 
Let's not forget some coverage closer to home :).

Larry Hama's doing something similar with the new IDW G.I. Joe title that's picking up where his Marvel Comics run left off, and that was previewed at Free Comic Book Day this year. Unlike the show, I think Hama's not pussy-footing around and is calling Cobra a new Private Military Company, like Blackwater or Executive Outcomes but deeply, genuinely, unquestionably evil.

I'm so-so on most of the character designs, but they're workable. I'm just glad they didn't go with the all-black bodysuit look of the live-action movie. I actually like Lady Jaye's new look a lot, though, and I'm kind of happy to see Tunnel Rat getting front-line status, too.

I like that direction a lot from Hama actually. Nostalgia for 80's properties has been huge in the previous decade, but now we are getting this perfect storm of new GI JOE, Transformers, Thundercats, Voltron, and Ninja Turtles almost all at the same time. Now all we need is a new He-Man cartoon greenlit.

I can only assume Adler is playing Cobra Commander which works. My guess is that Clancy Brown would play Destro.

Messner is a somewhat odd choice for this, but dude has to work. I wonder who he will be playing. The dude is also freaking insane based off an interview I read with him once.

I hope Lee Majors is playing General Colton or General Flagg.
 
Wow I had no idea that was him in Resolute. I hope he plays the character much the same way. I know its a separate series, but the animation style does look somewhat similar to Resolute which I like. I know the new show can't really be violent, but I have it will at least have a heavier tone like say Wolverine and The X-men.
 
I'm bumping this thread up in case anyone wants to add anything to the idea that we have a new GI JOE series premiering in 2 weeks. And yet there is virtually no promotion out there for it.

Avengers is premiering on Disney XD after this series in October. And yet we are seeing tons of material out there for the new Avengers show. Hasbro is barely even lifting a finger.

Its the same for Transformers Prime. Since Comic Con there has been almost nothing.
 
Patience is virtue. I'm excited for both G.I. JOE and Transformers as well as The Hub in general, and from the looks of it, it's coming up nicely.
 
I honestly have to say, from what I am reading, I think G.I. Joe Resolute was better in every way to this new series.

The action was solid, the art was solid, the story line was solid.

I really want THAT series to be green lit.
 
What exactly are we being patient for though? I assume Hasbro and The Hub want people to watch these shows, so I mean . . . getting the word out would be a start. I've seen no ads, TV spots, promos, or commercials anywhere.

I've seen stickers on toys to tell people to go to the Hub website which is pretty meager in and of itself.

They should not be relying on the hardcore fanbase to carry the show. Otherwise it is going to tank and not get passed a first season.
 
Either way, I'm hoping the show will have some kind of resolution instead of prolonging the whole "villian-with-good-publicity-hunts-renegade heroes" bit (preferrably the resolution where the villains are exposed for who they really are, and the Joes finally clear their names). I know that this is a more serious story than before, but while I don't know about anyone else, I don't want to be constantly reminded of that. In other words, I'm hoping this show will focus on the story and not the drama. Also, in order for the story to have a resolution of any kind it also needs to have progression, which can't happen if, say, said progression is put on the back burner in order to do more episodic stories that focus on the Joes trying to do good even though they're constantly hunted, etc. Also, I want an actual resolution, and not one of those fake ones where it looks like there will be one, but then something happens that causes the story to go back to the status quo, all in order to present the posibility of another season (which can also be done by doing a cliffhanger ending, which I also hope won't happen).

While I'm not against the idea of additional seasons, I'm against the idea of making them simply because they want to keep the show going. I'm hoping that if more seasons are made, that there is some actual planning behind them, and that they continue to focus on the story and not on the drama, as I said.

At any rate, it will be premiering soon, so we'll know for sure one way or the other.
 
I'm very confused about this Hub network. Is its own channel? LIke is it going to be Hasbro cartoons 24/7 the way CN used to be with cartoons? Or is this more like Toonami where it is just a few hours of stuff? Also, what station is this going to air on? Or rather, should I be more worried about Comcast even carrying it?

With those questions out of the way, I cannot say I am excited for this or Transformers. The designs are just so bad to the point that there is nothing GI Joe about this. Oh, and the fact that they are using robots for the majority of the Cobra soldiers just screams Sigma Six all over agian. Unless Renegades is similar to Resolute in tones and story telling, and where they aren't afraid to kill someone, then this show is going to blow.
 
It will be replacing DIscovery Kids, although some of its shows will be making the transition (e.g., Kenny the Shark). Also, not every show is going to be based on Hasbro creations. There will be other shows, too, including reruns of shows such as Fraggle Rock. They even plan to show classic sitcoms. In any case, yes, it will be a full 24/7 network. Also, If you get DISC-K, then you'll get this network when it launches on 10/10/10 at 9 AM (EDT).

Back on topic, I think G.I. Joe Renegades should be judged on its own merits (that is, without trying to compare it to previous versions). That said though, my previous position on it stands.
 
Cobra a "publically benevolent" organization? Has this idea ever been used before in a G.I.Joe cartoon? Because if not, then it's nice to see they're at least trying something new. Actually, it kind of reminds me of how the Shredder was a public buisnessmen and philanthropist in the 2003 TMNT cartoon.

Stiil, I'm not so sure I'm getting this whole "renegades" thing. It sounds like an animated version of the A.Team - and while the latter was pretty much a full-blown cartoon done in a live action format, I'm not sure using the concept for a G.I.Joe show is the best idea. Then again, perahaps this will end up being for the best, providing that the overall quality is high and the show long-lasting. :)

Also, LOL at that casting list. As if Kevin Michael Richardson was best known for the small role he had in The Batman - not that I didn't like the show, but why on earth did they choose that out of all the other shows he's voice-acted for?
 
It's actually the premise of Hama's current story arc in Real American Hero, where Cobra is contracted by the United States for urban defense after the Joe team has been disbanded.

I want my Joe comic animated. :crying:
 
I think the problem with Resolute is they decided to start by the end. Showing a final battle between Joes and Cobra. But this is big event that didn't fit in the 1 hour time they had. So a lot of stuff was shoed in and the result was not quite as spectacular as we thought it would be.

If instead they showed a standard origin story for both Joes and/or Cobra, I think it would have more chance to become a series.

Of course there's the factor of the violence, and Resolute being PG-13 and all. They need a cartoon to sell to children. Bullets, and people getting killed by swords don't work in that scenario.
