Toon Zone Talkback - "Family Guy Volume Seven": Who Says Seven is a Lucky Number?

I agree. The whole point of having a cast is that each character brings something unique to the mix. The post cancellation episodes pretty much threw out any previously established characterisation other than Chris being awkward and dumb. The characters now are all basically the same.

This is the same problem a lot of people have with the modern incarnation of Homer Simpson as well.

This is why, to me, the last good episode of the series was the Stewie Kills Lois/Lois Kills Stewie double episode. They did kind of hint that they were done with the evil Stewie at the end of this episode though, which is just plain stupid.

Apparently one of next season's episodes involves Lois stealing one of Meg's boyfriends. .

How come Lois suddenly is cheating on Peter all the time now?

The Bill Clinton episode, this upcoming episode. That really enrages me.

I think my problem with the later seasons is that they've decided to shove their political messages down our throats, and that we just need to be the great liberal thinkers like Brian.

Lois isn't a choir girl, and Peter isn't a choir boy. In fact, they've been pushing the whole "Lois is really a skank" thing for quite some time. Look at the DVD movie.

Peter's proven to be quite the pervert and also molested a teenage girl.

Lois was always shown to be a skank back in her youth, not as a mother, I really think by having her cheat on Peter with other men, especially one that is dating her teenage daughter isn't appropriate for her character.

Some of the DVD exclusive stuff is edited for time instead of censorship reasons.

I also like the commentaries. I like to listen to them because it shows the crew can have fun and not be all serious. I get kind of sick of "Well, we animated this particular scene using bla bla bla" and "This was edited because bla bla bla"

I'd rather hear "This was such a kick-ass scene to make" and "Screw FOX for editing this out" but maybe thats just me.

She's going easy on him, believe me. If I had tto be married to THAT, I'd have snothered him in his sleep.

Not that she's such a great prize herself lately.

Basically, what turns me off of the show is that it almost feels like they're going out of their way to make the characters as unlikeable as possible. 22 minutes of reprehensible people being total jerks to each other is not my idea of entertainment. I can't think of any redeeming character traits for any of the Griffin family members.* And yeah, I know that this show isn't character-driven and it currently hinges on non-linear plots and random humor with no rhyme or reason, and that's exactly the way the writers want it to be. But those are all the reasons why I don't like it, and it's why I'm not inclined to watch it. It's the polar opposite of everything I like best in animation. There used to be a point where I could still see some good in it, but not anymore.

*Except Meg. She still has my sympathy, and I guess she always will. You get the sense that she wasn't always meant to be this crazy and desperate and whiny - the other characters made her that way through years of abuse. She could be a better character if she could just get away from Quahog...which is yet another reason why I still think she should be getting the spin-off instead of Cleveland.

I don't watch this show because I'm not into mean-spirited humor, which this show is full of. I don't know about you but when I watch a show I want to LIKE the characters. I'd rather not spend 25 minutes with a bunch of jerks. It's clear the writers have no respect for these characters at all.

My main problem with the commentaries is that the FG Crew never teach me anything new about the show, in the commentaries I have heard they were just laughing and cussing, i mean just compare them with the simpsons commentaries.

About the edited stuff I admit I was a bit too harsh but since the episodes on volume 7 are so awful, I really can't imagine the edited stuff being funny.

The only FG commentary I really remember is one where they actually stop the recording because one of the other writers comments that he feels Seth dominates the production. Seth takes offense to it and there's a very obvious cut before the commentary continues.

But Peter told us that "it's just a cartoon," so it's apparently okay for the writers to do anything they want with the characters. Yeah...that's basically the sad story of the show now. "Family Guy: We'll do whatever we feel like doing."

Toon Zone Talkback - "Family Guy Volume Seven": Who Says Seven is a Lucky Number?

I'm not one of those "Family Guy sucks now!" people, and I'm not going to get on a soapbox about how much better the pre-cancellation episodes were, because they also had their share of faults. I'll just sum up and say that the show's not doing it for me anymore.

Some of the jokes and cutaways work, but the misses outweigh the hits for me. Plus, the cast has all but lost their personalities; they generally run the gamut from being unlikeable jerks to being highly annoying. It doesn't help matters how the characters randomly leap in and out of character faster than Scott Bakula.

In the case of Lois, while I can understand how the writers didn't want Lois to become a bland housewife and everyone's straight woman, but mutating her into an ?ber-skank wasn't the way to go, IMO. Brian, who used to be my favorite character, is now a whiny, liberal, love-starved soapbox. I liked him a lot more when he was just a snide observer.

I'm not going to prattle on about how I would do things or how I think Seth and crew should be handling the show and the characters, for the simple fact that I'm not Seth MacFarlane and my take on the FG cast wouldn't be his, even if I thought the show was great. This could very well (and likely is) the direction that they want to take the show in, and it's clear that FG isn't going back to its' pre-cancellation format anytime soon.

For those who are satisfied with the present Family Guy, I say enjoy; I won't be a hater and rain on their parade. But it's not for me anymore.

But as I implied before, cutaways aren't the only type of joke in the show. Just because there's one cutaway per minute on average doesn't mean there is only one JOKE per minute.

And there have been a few episodes of FG which have gotten me to laugh multiple times per minute. That's how it should be. To have only one attempt at a gag per minute (no matter how successful or unsuccessful it is) would be an atrocious amount.

uh i dont think the "joke a minute" phrase litterally means a joke every 60 seconds. i think people are just commenting on the overuse of cutaways these days.

I was in the "Family Guy's gone downhill it sucks" camp before, but I've noticed that I don't enjoy watching the pre-cancellation episodes either anymore. It got to the point where I stopped watching it regularly and then altogether about a year ago, and I don't miss it and I haven't had any desire to get back into it.

The show just wore on me, I think. It relies on shock humor and little else - it always has - and just the way it's so often flat-out loud and obnoxious and seemingly trying to irritate rather than entertain gets to me. Like the gag with Peter holding his knee, that's a perfect example. I think the way everyone used to imitate that joke in high school really made me hate it even more, though that's not the show's fault of course.

Like I found the show kind of funny at first but then I started thinking like, okay, I've got the point. Shock value doesn't hold up for very long. To me, the show has the longevity of an open bag of crackers. I can't keep rewatching episodes like I can with other series, and the new ones are the same old crap that annoys me like the rest.

That's why I always thought this show just works better as being a short-run series with limited episodes. Because it's just played. The characters each have their shtick that they revolve around, and they've shown us pretty much everything there is to show with those shticks.

Not that I think the newer episodes are worse - well, some of them are - but it's just I think the show has done its thing and it's time to pack up now before it annoys me even more.

I have a question about volume 7.The Bale cutaway was cut in the unedited version on dvd, but what about the televised version of the episode?

You are right it only aired once, but what I meant to ask was if the Bale cutaway is in televised version of the episode in the dvd.
You can see the televised version in the special features of the episode.
