Toon Zone Talkback - Anime at Best Buy in 2009: A New Strategy

Any specifics on what you guys found? I have a Big Lots across the street from my school; maybe I'll try to hit that up this week if there's anything I'm interested in.

The only thing I got when I went was

-Full Metal Alchemist: The movie (5$)
-Robotech: The shadow chronicles movie (5$)

There were some volumes, but no complete sets or anything along the lines of it. Still, there were some volumes that sell for 15-25$ at best buy at big lots for 3-6$.

Mostly single volumes and movies, but hey three or four bucks is a good deal.

One Piece movie, Afro Samurai, a couple DBZ Movies, as well as volumes for shows like case closed, Gundam, beck, and FMA. Hopefully the case closed DVRAB will still be there when I stop by.

I'm lucky that I live in the country because there's plenty of box sets and singles.

I got YYH S1 for $12 and they did have 2 and 3. I'm gonna try to summon enough funRAB to get the other two.

I scored the whole of Gurren Lagann for 45 bucks. The full set of the first two discs and the subtitled sets for the other two. Also got the whole of Le'Chevalier D'Eon, some Claymore and soem Speed Grapher. They had a bunch of Black Lagoon to, but that was more money than I felt like spending.

Oh, and just because, Beating Angel Dokuro-chan.

My Big Lots didn't have anything of the sort.

I did go back to BB and grabbed the Gurren Lagaan box ($24), the 3rd YYH set ($12.50), and ADV's 5cm movie ($11).

For anyone who has been to Big Lots lately, can we all get a full list of what anime we can expect to find after going through whatever's left at Best Buy?

My Best Buy list pretty much contains:

Gurren Lagann Set 01 2-Disc Regular Edition

Negima!? Part 1

Big O II: Anime LegenRAB Collection

One Piece: Season 1: Second Voyage

Any other titles someone can recommend for me? I'm very picky with what anime I like to watch even for the first time.

Thanks. I wanted to dispose of the fansubs I have from Gurren Lagann for quite some time now and have been saving my cash for the dubbed/subtitled sets. I still wished that the Best Buys near me at the Inner Harbor and Golden Ring had gotten Set 02 along with an early shipment of Set 03 since its Limited Edition comes with the long awaited English version of Gurren Lagann Manga Volume 1.

With Negima!?, I checked out the review that was posted on this forum and feel like it's kinda a win-lose or a lose-lose situation. The show has more action than the original anime incarnation of the manga yet some its fans feel like both animated versions aren't very good. I don't know what to do with this series.

There weren't a lot of One Piece titles so Season 1: Second Voyage was the next best thing.

I would add Case Closed seasons 2 and 3 on the list as well but here's a question. Should I get Case Closed since I don't like the fact that, like the original FMA Season 1 and 2 box sets, all of the episodes are shown in full screen?

As for Shakugan no Shana, I'm not sure if that would be good even though I've seen the first two episodes and browsed at the manga volumes.

School Rurable was pretty good last year at its screening at Otakon so maybe I should try out First Semester: Part 1 to start.

I haven't seen a lot of the Studio Ghibli films in both of the stores so they're out. Can someone tell me more about these "Shinkai" films?

Yu Yu Hakusho might be a blind buy but it depenRAB on how I feel once i get back to those stores again.

Haruhi Suzumiya is too overrated. I've seen on Youtube and have no plans of adding her and her many boxsets in my anime collection no time soon.

Cowboy Bebop Remix would be another good choice since getting that and Big O II would bring back a lot of the Adult Swim memories I never had since the shows aired too late for me when they first came on TV.

I wished Escaflowne was still at Best Buy because I haven't seen the series since Fox KiRAB broadcasted the original dubbed version.

Now should I add Pokemon, any seasons, to my list since Best Buy is trying to rid their stores of the films and TV show. There was even a double pack of Pokemon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew along with Pokemon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea $9.99 from its original price of $19.99.

And I'm still waiting to see if anyone has the full list of what I can expect to see in terms of anime at Big Lots.

So I got Shin-chan for a low price. I looked for the Desert Punk, Shana, Galaxy Angel AA, and Fate/Stay Night collections, but my BB didn't have any of them. Obviously people know about the sale and are buying them before the 21st. So if you want something on sale, don't delay, because you never know when the items might vanish from shelves forever.

It's a pretender. It pretenRAB to be Negima!, but isn't.

That's not going to ever change. You could always have the tv stretch the image to fill the screen.

My endorsement isn't good enough? If anything it has a good soundtrack.

The Place Promised in our Early Days.
[Voices of a Distant Star]
5 Centimeters Per Second.

Sci-fi with sad romantic themes.

Buy 5 centimeters if you see it, that will be rare.

Standard Shonen fighter, like a mix of the better parts of DBZ and BLeach.

Nothing particularly out of the ordinary at Big Lots. See forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-bargains-1/ which keeps an up to date list of all things that show up, and This Thread which ussually lists any anime that has shown up in the past.

let me make this simple about Yu-Yu Hakusho from my point of view.

Its in my top 3 anime's ever created.

Its the best shonen ever created in my opinion.

Yeah,I'd definately get Yu Yu Hakusho (if I didn't already have the whole series)....One of my favorite anime series ever, and easily one of the best shonen (I like Fullmetal Alchemist and Inuyasha just a bit more)....

Picked up the LE Gurren Lagann Box and Code Geass vol 1 and 2 (disks 1-4).

I'll go back to see if they Dokuro-chan, that was hysterical!

Managed to swipe the very last Yu Yu box set -- the Sensui arc (S3). The day before, it was a plethora of all of the sets, excluding S4. Didn't see that all.

I'm just glad that I decided to get in on the deal(s). I just have to get S2/S4 from the other BB which is not on the list, damn it. -_-

($25 isn't that bad though.)

Best Buy sucked for me. I mean here's the story:

So I managed to get Gurren Lagann Set 01 Regular Edition from BB but it was a wild goose chase since it was sold out at the Inner Harbor and Golden Ring locations so I was faithful that White Marsh had it full price I might add and I was managed to get back the extra $15 and some change for it when I returned to Golden Ring location.

I hope if annother sale like this comes up again, no one grabs my GL from me. Seriously last Sat. was when I saw this set with like two copies at Golden Ring before it was sold out.

Another case of sad news: There was only one copy of The Big O II at the GR location and I didn't pick it up since I need to survive on that extra cash until I get paid week after next and by then the sale will be over.

'Sigh'. I wished that ALL of the Best Buys had this sale but knowing most of us that would only make us go online or to, dare I say it, the dreaded F.Y.E. and their "High Prices of DOOM" to buy our anime. In that case, I'm happy that Best Buy isn't getting dry in the anime market.

Now where's my money? I need to get Gurren Lagann Set 03 Regular Edition. Why am I'm buying it? There's no need to get the soundtracks since I heard them already or should I say I already have both CRAB at home. Plus I pre-ordered my copy of manga volume 1 at my local B&N so why spend extra money on another box set?

I wonder if Best Buy will be getting more anime next week or is this it? With the anime still left in the stores affected by the 50% off sale, I wonder if those stores will be picking up any new anime to fill up the shelves to give people like me more choices into what to buy as the sale closes in on its final days?

I also wanted to get Elemental Gelade but that was sold out in the locations above so when I went to White Marsh, as expensive it was, I put it back and didn't even bother trying to do the price match junk like I did for GL.

Oh, woe is this fellow otaku in training, since 1999 of course.

Some best buys that are having the 50% Sale are still restocking select anime titles, I know for a fact that the store near me that is having the sale recently added Berserk:remastered and clannad part 2.
