Too many adverts!

X Factor is 2.5 hrs long next Saturday. They'll squeeze as many as possible into that no doubt, so one to record and play catchup from half hour in.

Has anyone tried to read the end-credits on anything lately?

As soon as they start to roll they are pushed over to one side of the screen to make way for a trailer. This makes them impossible to read on an average size set. Also, the programme that has just that moment finished might have ended on an emotional climax, instantly killed by a loud mouthed announcer eagerly promoting some forthcoming drivle with an alrmingly energetic, yet almost certainly faked, enthusiasm. Grrrrrr....

Even worse, ads for later programmes which are displayed during programmes themselves, often near the end at a critical phase.

These idiots are doing everything they can to drive away viewers.

Advertisers are very aware of the Sky+ generation who are skipping their wares. I've heard talk of more product placement instead of adverts, but if that happened I suspect it would be as well as 25 mins of ads in an hours telly.

Many years ago Sigue Sigue Sputnik released an album that had adverts inbetween songs. Tony James said it would pave the way for all albums to be free, as the advertising would pay for the production, of course that one wasn't free, as it was just a trial.

The product placement in Bond movies is very jarring, and I could see it being much worse in an ITV drama. "Yes Sir, I can use this latest iPad to cross-reference the murder location with known offenders. There are a whole range of crime solving apps now available from Apple, and very reasonably priced too." "Ok, lets get back to HQ in the Ford Kuga 1.6 DCi, we can do it in 20 minutes with minimal fuel costs and low carbon emissions"

For me to watch a commercial channel, a programme has to be excellent in order to stomach the ads. On Ch4, I watch Dispatches and Shameless and on Five, Neighbours. I have totally given up on the ITV network.

I watch TV with a PVR and jump all ads. Must save me several hundred hours of ad viewing per year.

It's really only when I channel surf that I see a lot of ad breaks. Randomly went through 5 channels the other day and they were all on ad breaks!

Isn't that an average though, so they can not show adverts in the early hours of the morning and then go over the 12 minutes in the prime time slots but keeping to an average of 12 minutes per hour over a 24 hour period.

UK tv is very restrained when it comes to adverts compared to many other countries.

America generally shows a lot more adverts, 7 breaks an hour is pretty normal there.

Then you have Spain where advert breaks of 15 minutes long are fairly common.

Greek tv also seems to show far more adverts than what we get here.

The only adverts I can take are the ones with just music like the Nikon advert (Radical Face - Home) - it made a certain artist extremely popular. Adverts are a big source for old and new music as well nowadays like the John Lewis adverts with the covers of different songs. Nonetheless adverts like Go compare, cillit bang, vanish etc are just awful!

No, that is the absolute maximum - the average is limited to 8 minutes per hour in the peak viewing times.
The full rules are here and the key points are:
  • In the periods 6pm

I always Sky+ advert channels - actually I sky + everything nowadays....just got back from the states - our ad breaks are nothing compared to theirs

Absolutely they do! I really noticed this when I recently tried to watch a film on TrueMovies. Each commercial break I found myself almost blasted out of my seat, so I did the only thing I could, I turned off the sound: silent adverts are much less intrusive. However, a couple of times I missed some of the film when it eventually resumed. One just can't win, it seems.

I don't think I'll bother with that channel again.
