"TMNT" Talkback (Spoilers)

saw it last night. loved it.

i loved the focus on the theme of brotherhood and family. everyone knows the turtles as an ass-kickin ninjas and crimefighters... however, it's always been overlooked that at the same time, these guys are a family. Their master is also their father. Not only do these guys have to work together as a team, they have to put up with each other. That was definitely a nice touch.

the villains were pretty weak, but they served their purpose. Karai's speech at the end definitely opened up things for a sequel (and an appearance by an old acquaintance). considering my love of the comics, i knew who karai was already, but i'll just leave it at that...

the animation was awesome. the turtles themselves looked great. despite the grumblings about them being "too short" or "too scrawny", they looked fine to me. they moved elegantly, and conveyed emotions in all the right ways. after 14 years, it was great seeing these guys back in action on the big-screen.

obviously, i gotta give props to the crew for giving focus to the Leo/Raph rivalry. their relationship was an integral part of the original comics, and i was happy to see it revitalized on-screen (other than the new cartoon, which also does a good job at that). true, mike and don were basically supporting players, but they had awesome moments too. Mikey's jokes were actually funny ("I have nightmares about... birthday parties.") and Don had an excellent intro scene and served his 'intellectual' role very well.

overall, it was a strong comeback for the Turtles. While it doesnt look like they'll recapture their massive popularity from the '90s, the TMNT will always be a formidable force to be reckoned with. Bring on the sequel.

to quote Michelangelo from the first live-action film:
"Major-league butt-kicking is back in town."

Excellent movie. I'd be willing to watch this in the theatre again and buy the DVD. A lot of young, college-aged adults watched when I watched. And there were a few groups of all-lady college-aged adults, which surprised me. I figured chicks didn't watch TMNT back in the day and they'd rather wait for a My Little Pony CGI movie or something to come out than to watch this because TMNT is infested with Boy Cooties.

This movie looked fantastic. I'm surprised by how far texturing and lighting have come in CG cartoons. I liked the character designs. I thought Casey was too skinny and his jaw was too pointy, but it wasn't bad.

The plot felt like it came straight out of a weak Saturday morning cartoon storyline, a la Jackie Chan Adventures. I wasn't expecting much anyway. And anything could be better than TMNT III's. The action and characterization of Leo and Raph and the well-executed themes made up for it a hundredfold.

They totally should've explained April's change in career path, since everybody around me was all "I thought she was a reporter."

Somehow, I have a feeling Winters was named "Winters" just so Mikey could make the pun about fall.

You are so lucky. I really, really want to see that, and hostmovie.com said it was coming to my area, but it lied.

Yes, how much I enjoy something and how good I think that it is are two separate entities.

And where's Sketch? I thought that his post would be the first.

There's not a lot more I can say about this movie that hasn't been posted in this thread.

Patrick Stewart's performance was very good, as usual. But, you know...
At the end of TMNT, Winters disappears into... 'soul dust'. The same thing happened to Professor X in X3, though that wasn't really the 'end' of him (or the film). Typecasting? Maybe, maybe not. But still...
Anyway, I liked TMNT, and I'd definitely pay to see it again. The DVD is already a must-buy for me, and I hope we get a sequel soon.

What time are you guys seeing it that has all adults?

I'd love to see the reactions of an audience that's my age....I'm guessing Friday night next weekend would be a good time? :)

I'm also REALLY surprised that there where alot of college aged women there. Then again, allot more women are fans of He-Man than I originally thought, so why not? If you're older brother likes a franchise, chances are pretty good the younger kids will get sucked in too.

This movie won for the line "You look like a big metal turtle". But in general, I loved it, and I'll definately see this at least once more in theatres. If they were to make a sequal or something to continue this, I would be very, VERY happy. I just don't know if they could ever find a splinter for the role (I can honestly say that was the best Splinter voice IMO).

Oh yes. Of that I'm quite aware. In fact, I was just discussing that in the Pan's Labyrinth talkback (which was actually prompted by my response to one of your posts). That's how I always approach any judgment I make, with an attempt to separate objectivity and subjectivity.

But since critics, generally, are discussing the quality of the movie, there's no real reason to say screw the critics when giving a 2.5 star rating that matches what the critics are saying overall. The critics might or might not have enjoyed the movie, but they seem to agree with TF that its low quality.

Just got back from the movie. I can say it was a great and excellent movie, Raph vs. Leo fight scene pretty much stole the show to me. The entire cast did a great job on the movie. The scene I love the most was entire segment with Casey, April, and Karai going after the 13th monster. I hope they do make a sequal this movie, since they kinda hinted something might gonna happen soon.

Just got back and I only have moments to post before I go to work so I'll go a bit more indepth at a later time.

The movie was solid. The turtles were just as they should be. The human's designs did suffer a bit but April with her hair down was hot stuff. *thumbs up*

The plot was a bit iffy but it's nice to see something original. The foot clan are pretty worthless in this movie and the monster don't add much.

The family conflict is apparent all around and Leo VS Raph was truely a spectacle to be seen.

By the end of the movie everything felt a bit rushed though. I'd rate it higher than the 2nd and 3rd TMNT movies without a doubt (who wouldn't). Though I'm not too sure I can say I like it better than the first live action movie.

I recommend it to any turtle fan but don't expect the amazing cause you might be dissapointed. But if you're going to a turtles film to see the turtles you'll be pleased to know they are good or perhaps even better than ever and the animation of them roaming the streets is a sight you MUST SEE on the big screen.

Last night at 9:30 it was mostly adults and college type kids. And I immediately recognized Jeff Matsuda's designs as soon as they started showing humans. So that's how they look in 3D.

What I meant by "Screw the critics" was "Don't let the critics panning this film stop you from watching it." And you're right, it makes me look hypocritical to rate it objectively, but it's what I've been doing when I review any film so the contradiction didn't occur to me. I'll give it a star rating that reflects enjoyability instead.

TMNT - ****
(* = Kicking and Screaming, ***** = Snakes on a Plane)

The movie looked great...hell, it looked utterly fantastic. I'm glad they didn't botch the CGI in this, and just went for a darkly-cartoony feel. Perfect look, perfect atmosphere...and for the most part, pretty well written.

For the most part. The first hour or so was a very well done re-introduction into the Turtles mythos. Though the ending fell into a "clusterf**k" conclusion. (sorry for the gutter talk!) Personally I would have loved to just see Shedder again, but I understand the decision not to. Problem is, the Max Winters/13 Monsters/Stone Generals thing fell horribly flat, and we didn't have enough/any time to enjoy a damn thing about their plot. The Foot were underused, which is a crime in and of itself, and The 13 Monsters were hardly even there...why have them if you wern't going to show them in your movie for more than 30-60 seconds at a time? Basic rule of monster-movie making...show the damn monsters!!

Aside from the antagonist's story arch, the movie was a joy ride. I still think everything would have felt less clustered if they cut out Max Winters altogether, and had the foot kidnap Leo after the Leo-Raph incident...which would have lead to a less "Huh? What? Who hit who, now? How'd they get there?" ending, and more of a Turtles re-united vs. Foot Clan...cleaning house, understandable, and still enjoyable ending.

I'm really happy this movie was #1 this past weekend as well. Hopefully it'll get the Gatchaman and Astroboy flick's in the fast lane.

I thought the movie was great.Better than the previous ones IMO (don't ask why). The action was great and the dialogue was better than I expected.I don't think it is a kids movie but it is more of a family movie as it does appeal to adults as well.Patrick Stewart and the Late Mako gave excellent performances in the movie.I gave it 3.5 stars.

While the character designs for humans (particularly April) were absurdly laughable, I LOVED this movie.

I had a lot of fun seeing it, and it brings back fond memories of the turtles. :D

i'm probably wrong but i heard this film was done on a thrifty budget (less than $50M) so turning a profit shouldn't be too challenging

btw, what trailers did you guys see?

i saw:

1. fred clause
2. harry potter
3. fantastic four 2
4. a bee movie

no spidey, no transformers, no simpsons trailers though
maybe next month when i see athf

TMNT is #1 huh, time for some gloating. I called that it would knocked 300 out of the position.

You underestimated one thing, the nostalgia factor. The kids of Turtlemania have grown up and went to see this movie because they remember it from their childhood. That something you've must have forgetten while you were thought of that.
