Here's a tip to remember as I've been in the 'been there done that' situation. When you get a stuck wheel nut on the older single side bikes, don't go at it with an impact, long pipe on the spanner etc.
Take an oxy acetylene torch and heat the inside of the axle to about 120 degrees as you rotate the wheel on the stand. The heating will expand and lengthen the axle therefore relieving some of the clamping force. Stick the torch in there to heat the center span of the axle. Mine still required a fairly good grunt on the spanner to loosen it and I grease the hell out of the nut and forcing cone. 120 degrees won't melt the grease in the bearings or damage the seals.
