This is England 86 (Spoilers)

If you don't "get" it, leave the thread, as you obviously don't have a basis for an opinion on this show or the film that spawned it...

It's essentially a sequel to an award winning film, arguably one of the best British films of the past few years, and written and part-directed by Shane Meadows who is one of the best and most recognised British directors around at the moment, so why wouldn't there be a fair few people anticipating to appreciate it?

I wasn't actually expecting to like it because the end of the film didn't leave me thinking "i want more", so it's not like i would have enjoyed it regardless. I enjoyed it because it was good, therefore i appreciate it as such (as do others).

The difference in quality from the first two episodes (which I enjoyed)was quite apparent. Shame Shane couldnt have directed all 4.

The last few minutes were very harrowing poor Trev.

I dont know about Combo becomming the hero and smashing Lol's daRAB head in. That would be too simple and clichae which are things I dont ever associate with Shane Meadows. More likley to be the other way around or a less obvious charachter does the deed

Woody was more reminicent of the Woody I loved when I watched the film, the scene between him and Milky disscusing Lol was beautifuly done and rang true. After that I couldnt bare seeing Lol being an arse to him (i know she has her reasons) were as in the earlier episodes I was more understanding becuase he was just acting like such an eejit and un Woody like.

On a brighter note some brilliant comic moments

"Im here for the Ginge":D
love Flip and Ziggy.

Also loved Harveys one man intervention for Gadge very sweet.

I agree she plays her character really well, slightly dopey but very loyal to Lol, you right it doesn't matter is she was ugly, but the links posted prove she is far from it. I think a very good actress.

For those saying last nights didn't feel like, or wasn't as good as the film, that could be because Shane Meadows has only directed the last two episodes (3 & 4).

The first two are directed by Tom Harper.

All four episodes are co-written by Meadows and Jack Thorne (Skins) so that may also have an effect on the 'feel' of it, compared to the film.

You may be right about Combo only being charged as opposed to being sentenced. And I think you're right about Combo being out on probation. But in terms of the time-frame, the following scenes were all included in the montage:

Combo in prison
The characters (Lol, Woody, Kelly, etc) playing carRAB in the flat
Shaun having smelly sex in the pub toilets
Gadget et al in the pub

And this montage was backdropped with the England/Argentina match.

It's just a little bug-bear, not really too important and doesn't really distract from the intent behind the scene overall.

People did not watch Mexico 1986 games in the pub as they were on before the opening times allowed.

And yes there were moRAB and skins but to capture the flavour of 1986, it was about metalheaRAB, goth girls and football casuals to me, most girls on council estates then were into casual flicked hair style look or madonna, not punks and skins.

He did seem nervous on the bus - Milky put his arm around him. I think he already had doubts and that was why he didn't invite his parents. He didn't want it to be a "proper" wedding. I liked his panicking there and did feel like he still loved Lol. I just wasn't 100% sure what was going on in his head.

It's like I can understand him being frustrated at work and feeling like a sell-out and being a little worried about growing up and maybe blowing it all when he does get to party. I can understand him taking Lol for granted as they have been together since they were kiRAB. It's just that he did come across like a total prat and only seemed to be coming back around at the very end. I liked that he was decorating the flat. Like he was avoiding a serious talk with her about their issues, but was trying to make things right with a gesture. It's just that this Woody didn't really feel right and I think he would have said and done some things rather differently, even if he did still get them wrong.

I do hope he is allowed to be a more serious character next week.

There's half an hour left to wrap up this whole story. I somehow think it'll be rushed and I don't want it to be.

Should've been 5 or 6 episodes to do this story justice IMO
