The Virtues and Flaws of Anime You Enjoy or Dislike

haha....I love how 1 persons openion can make others so mad for no reason...there cartoons people...sheesh...It's not like I killed a guy, I also like how people will call me Ignorant just because of my Openion....Again, I don't really care what others think about my openion..so everyone please..get back on topic. sheesh.

You dont understand, this thread is about the flaws and virtues of the anime, and your bringing in merchandise as a reason you think One Piece has a horrible female cast, which absolutely nothing to do with the anime.

You have a point...But still One Piece really has sold out its female cast, again like I said, Bleach as well has horrible female characters, Orihime, Rangiku...but there's enough non-fanservice ones to balance it out.

but yea, One piece uses all of its female cast in a fanservicy way, Nico Robin & Boa Hancock are obviously made for fanservice & Nami who started out as a decent heroine has also become fanservice fodder, not to mention the MAGIC increase in her bust size (without a time skip mind you) Yea bleach has Fanservice gals, But they started out that way, & again, there's enough non-Fanservice gals to balance it out.

So yea...when your main female cast are made of have become Fanservice characters...thats a pretty weak female cast.

But I digrese...Back on topic.

Street Fighter II V

Pros
Adaption of a great series
Good fight scenes

Cons
- not a very good adaption (Movies are better)
-sub-par dub
- kind of boring at times

The problem i have with this is that i dont think being in fanservice makes a character a bad character, all the characters you speak of have personalities and are strong (not just phisically) (except Orihime, she isnt strong inany way whatsoever) and stuff that actually has to do with "character", how big their breasts are or how many sexy scenes they are in has absolutely nothing to do with that.

The way you say this its like if Kubo suddenly made Rukias boobs bigger and there was a beach episode with her then apparently that would make her a bad character to you, ignoring all the stuff that makes her a good, strong character, like the stuff that actually makes up her character (her strong will & personality and all that kind of stuff).

I dont agree with that.

To each his own my friend...But, personally Aside from Nami I don't think any of the current gals of the crew have strong personalities. but again in the end its differance in openion.

and you bet I would be P.O.d if Kubo gave Rukia big knockers...that would tottally mess up her fighting style! lol!

& I don't think a character having big boobs makes them a bad character (although it does make them easier to use for fanservice.) I think when the characters a made soley for fanservice it makes them a bad
character.

but again, its a moot point, so lets drop it, my openion like everyone elses in the end is insignifigant, it does nothing to help or harm a series...se yea, lets just drop it.

I guess if you have enough useless characters, it balances out the ones that are fanservice. That about right?

There's some strong bias if you can seriously argue a cast that includes a cat-woman that loves to be nude, a Shinigami that shows her cleavage in both her uniform and school uniform and a loli-into-more-cleavage-transform girl is more fanservicy a show with 2 main females at best.

Also, weak characterization for Bleach. Don't forget that.

Gaogaigar Pros:
-Great animation, especially its FINAL
-The dub was pretty good, with a Venture Brother as Gai
-A lot of vets on the japanese side of the sub made it more enjoyable for old-time Super fans
-Even the recycled FINAL Fusion was shifted every episode to not make it boring
-Mike Sounder breaks awesome every time
-The attacks and strategies are great. Nothing really repeated enough
-Second half of the show is amazing

Cons:
-It's 50 episodes of a toy commercial, so it does drag after a while
-Not for everyone. Come for the fun, leave the brain, pump up your heart
-The episodes focusing on the kiRAB are meh compared to the rest.

taekmkm.....I'm not gonna argue with you, we both have are own openions, I respect yout right to your openions, you should respect my right to mine.....also, arn't most openions Bias anyway...I mean it may be one persons openion that say, George Lopez is the best comedian of all time, the person next to him may think George lopez is the worst, and that Dan cook is the best.

Point being, there's no Right or wrong when it comes to openions, diffrent people see things diffrent ways its as simple as that, so what if I'm not a Rabbid One Piece Fan boy..I'm not a rabbid Bleach fan either....I just think its more enjoyable then one piece...thats my openion. I don't really care if you or anyone else disagree's .

I'll review my current favorite anime. (Has been for a while)

Code Geass/R2

General Opinion: Amazing.

Pros:

1. Characters: The characters are the best part of the show. The main four are very well developed, and most of the side cast is great, too. Favorites include: C.C., Lelouch, Kallen, Suzaku, Anya, Cornelia, Euphemia, ETC.

2. Animation- very nice.

3. Story- Don't want to get into it. But I like it.

4. Voices are diverse and very fitting.

Cons:

1. Rushes a bit in Season 2. But I still love r2.

2. Some of the side cast isn't developed much.

3. The mecha got a little over the top.

Bleach
My general opinion: A terrible show in every sense

Pros:
*....well, it's colorful
*Uh, some of the opening songs are decent

Cons:
*The cast. Nothing but a bunch of boring Final Fantasy rejects and Mary Sues. Heck Ichigo even looks like Cloud Strife trying to dress up like Goku. That's how pathetic is show truly is.
*Weak story. Seriously it's so boring. The story drags on just like DBZ did at times, though at least DBZ made up for it with awesome fights and likable characters. Bleach fails at these.
*The background music. While some of the opening songs are decent, the bgm is some of the most generic sounding music I've heard.
*The fighting. Most of it is mediocre at best. They're not terrible (surprisingly) but I've seen much better in other, and better, anime series.

Fist of the North Star
My general opinion: I'd have to be already dead not to like it.

Pros:
*Awesome music and openers & enders. The music is perfect in FotNS. It knows when to be intense and when to be calm. The opening songs make you get ready for action, while the ending songs make you weep at their sad tone.
*Kenshiro. Sure Ken is almost always emotionless in his facial expression, but he's still very likable. He's got a good heart and only kills people he thinks really deserves it. Not too mention it's awesome when he makes characters heaRAB explode.
*Raoh. Even though Raoh is usually cruel and evil, he's not without his morals. Like when he was facing Fudoh and told his men to kill him if he showed signs of weakness, but when his men chose to kill Fudoh instead, he was very angry and killed some of his own men, with the others fleeing. That is what I call a proud warrior.
*The fights. Though the earliest fights usually revolve around Ken killing a bunch of bandits with only a few punches and kicks, the fights later get more intense. It's always a thrill to see Kenshiro "ATATATATATATATATA" his way, causing the villains lirabs to explode into blood and gore.

Cons:
*The animation. This is typical for a lot of anime series, especially old ones, but animation isn't one of the series' strong points (except for in the movie).
*Bat and Lin. I know they're used for a light purpose in a relatively gloomy setting, but I don't care a lot for them. Doesn't help that when Lin yells out for Ken that I want to plug my ears.
*Pppppacing. Like almost all anime being adapted directly from comics that are still in production, pacing in FotNS can get very slow. Though watching Ken hitting his enemies multiple times can be fun, it can also get tiresome when he's doing it on the same enemy for five minutes.

Naruto
My general opinion: Don't like it

Pros:
*It has an interesting premise. As IGN pointed out it's kind of like Harry Potter with ninjas, or at least spell casters calling themselves ninjas.
*It was good that the beginning of the story. Basically something of an underdog story of a boy who proves himself.
*The opening songs. Some of them are awesome, especially the first one R.O.C.K.S., with it's cheesy, hard rock feel.
*It's colorful.

Cons:
*Boring or annoying characters.
*Plagiarism. I'm not kidding, this show has copied from other material. The prime example being a part in the fight with Naruto and Neji, which was directly taken from the Cowboy Bebop movie when Spike fights Vincent. Coincidence? I think not. Though whether they got permission from the owners of the material I am not sure, it's still no excuse for unoriginality.
*The character design. I never liked it personally. It just feels bland and plain.
*Worthless characters. Here's more DBZ Syndrome, as some characters eventually become absolutely pointless for the show. Especially a lot of the female characters.
*Filler. It seems to suffer from this frequently, which has turned off many fans of the show. I stopped watching it before I could really see any of it, but from what I hear the filler is crap.

One Piece
My general opinion: The best cartoon series from Japan that's still airing today.

Pros:
*The story. While simple, the whole idea of pirates looking for a treasure that will make them king is quite intriguing. Pirates haven't been done enough in anime and that's what makes it great.
*The cast and characters. The main characters are all interesting and are always doing something. They each have their own distinctive personality. They likely will never become useless like Chaozu and Yamucha became in DBZ.
*It's very colorful. Enough said.
*The cartoony art style. This one's a bit of a mixed bag for some, with one half loving the art style and the other half hating it. I am the former. It's very distinctive and original from other anime which is a big kudos from me.
*The music. OP's orchestra may be the best I've heard in any anime series. I might even go as far as saying that I love it more than Fist of the North Star's and the Dragon Ball series'.
*The fights. Oh yeah, of coarse. The fight with Luffy and Arlong is one of the most epic battles in an anime series.

Cons:
*...But I suppose it's not without it's cons. Being adapted directly from a comic book it does occasionally have slow pacing and filler. Sometimes the filler is good, while other times it's bad.

While I could spend three pages deconstruction a certain someone's ill-conceived notions, I'll go ahead and do this with a show I love, a show I'm meh about, and a show I despise.

One Piece-

Pro's-

The CHARACTERS- Male or female, they're all unique, interesting, with strengths as well as weaknesses. No one-note characters here.
The plot- rather than beat on a lot of shounen cliches, the plot is multifaceted, sprawling, and epic. (But this may be a case of Your Mileage May Vary, check the cons)
The action- Always interesting, no power up fests.

Cons-

The plot- If you don't like long shows, this is not for you. This show is LONG. Like, really long.
Character designs- These can be very off-putting due to their uniqueness. Again, your mileage may vary. I like them a lot, but it's really easy to see how someone wouldn't.

Overall-

The best shounen on TV right now, and the best there's been in a while...

Speed Grapher-

Pros-

Plot- Never stanRAB still for a minute
Action- Very unique
Music- Equally good

Cons-

Characters- Pretty much all jerks and a Mary Sue getting kidnapped.
Content- Not for the squeamish

Overall- A decent, if ultimately forgettable show more about the shock value than the actual story.

Moribito-

Pros-

The animation. It looks beautiful. It really does. It's a testament to what can be done with animation when time and care is put into it.

Cons-

But nothing happens in it! The plot is a meandering trainwreck.
The characters are completely unlikeable.

Overall- Junk. Avoid.

Baccano

General opinion: One of the best surprises I had the pleasure of watching

Pros
*Since it's a 12 episode series (with 3 OVA's) it has a very quick pace. Only stopping to breathe to explain the portion of the plot we're still missing
*Every character has some quirk that makes them a joy to watch even if you hate them. Ladd Russo and the Issac/Miria duo for one
*For that matter, Issac and Miria. They are awesome
*One of the few shows that I think works much, much better dubbed. Especially since it's done by FUNi. The accents work exceptionally well with the time period with the most impressive Brooklyn accent that lays in Firo I've ever heard. Also, again, Issac and Miria.
*The three (or is it only three!!?) years jumping back and forth to set up questions and then explain them in time (or were they explained already!!??) is one of my favorite types of storytelling. When done right, like in here, it creates a rich, mysterious atmosphere that you just want to learn more of.
*OP song kicks ass.

Cons

*The skipping, multi-layered storyline will not work for everyone. You really need to figure out some of the things that go on in it for yourself as it's explained. It won't just dump the whole thing on your lap.
*This isn't a problem for me, but it is very, very, violent. Lots of blood. Lots of explosions. Lots of violence. Basically if you can't get through episode 1, you better stop.
*Assuming you don't fall in love with Zach and Miria, you'll probably end up hating them and seeing them as annoying.
*The ending is a great, conclusive one but at the same time leaves you wanting more. Probably since the novels are still ongoing (luckily we've got Durarara!! to fill the gap)

Alright, I'll try my hand at this for a few shows that I like:

Hunter X Hunter

General Opinion: One of the best shounen series ever made, although its not as good as some of the classics due to certain flaws that can make it feel boring to watch at times.

Pros:Very interesting and competent main cast of characters.Nice art-style and very fluid animation for the action scenes that still happens to be FAR better than the treatment that most other shounen series get with their stiff animation (with the exception of only their really important fights/action scenes). The BGM/OST is good stuff and has a unique feel to it, rather than just being generic sounding music. The concept of Nen as a form of "energy/magic" in the HXH world is explored in great depth and really makes its use in corabat very interesting to see, unlike how other shounen just have some generic form of energy, like Ki, Chakra, Spirit Energy, etc.The story is carefully written most of the time, and it avoiRAB using too many predictable cliches, and there isn't even any hesitation to kill off some of the more minor characters and make the heroes lose in many situations. The series strikes a perfect balance between its serious, dramatic, and dark situations and its more friendly and light-hearted situations. Most of the villains are really well through-out, and are usually in a more "grey" area rather than just being simple "black" characters that serve to contrast generic "white" hero characters in a very "black and white" cast of characters (also, a lot of the "good" characters can also be more in the "grey" area than in the "white" one).Gon and Killua are probably my favorite pair of "best-frienRAB who have vastly different backgrounRAB" out of any shounen series that I have seen, and out of any anime series that I have ever seen, in general. It never goes easy on ANY characters, and especially not Gon, the main characters of the series, who ALWAYS has to go through many harRABhips as he grows through this series, while he rarely ever gets things to go completely his way.Cons:A lot of the supporting cast can often times feel very dull. For every good character that is introduced into the series, I feel that I see at least 2 or 3 more bland, boring, and just plain uninteresting characters that I just don't feel add any enjoyment to the story at all, and at times some can also feel pointless. Some arcs can feel really dragged out at times, and the pacing in the series is, overall, not very consistent, as at certain times it will have an exciting and fast pace to it, whereas at other times it will slow down to a very dull-pace for quite a while. Some of the fights don't get as much care and attention put into them as others, and therefore end up being generic shounen-style action that feels really tedious to watch.Certain plot points can feel downright confusing which occasionally makes the story for this series seem very unorganized.I'll write some pros and cons for some more shows later on (and I still plan to write about Yu Yu Hakusho, Hellsing Ultimate, Black Lagoon, Full Metal Panic!, Monster, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, and MAYBE One Piece, if I feel up to it).

Dragonball Z

General Opinion - Anytime for 1998 to about 2001 I would've said this was the best, but after watching so many other anime in the same genre, I just feel like it's "meh-ish" these days. I tried watching a couple of episodes of Kai a few times but I just couldn't get into it.

Positives

Fights - Vegeta vs Goku round 1 and Cell vs Goku will always be some of my favorite fights to go down in the series.

Music - I'm talking about the dub here. Bruce Faulconer pieces were nice especially when it came to transformations. I've always liked hearing Vegeta's theme play when he turns into a SSJ for the first time. Goku turning SSJ for the first time was also pretty epic with that theme playing in the background.

Artwork - I like Akira's artwork, I just hate it when the animation makes them look hideous.

Negatives

Characters - In my earlier days of watching DBZ I would've said that the only characters I can't stand were Krillin, Hercule, and Goten, but nowdays the only character(s) that I actually like are Future Trunks and Vegeta (oh how I hate he was done in movie 8... No matter who it is Vegeta will never punk out like that). I used to like Goku over everyone else, but over time I've grown sick and tired of the "reckless" nature trait. And then most of my frustration with Goku comes from the Cell fight. It really pissed me off to see him give Cell a sensu bean. As honorable as that may seem I just can't stand that stupidity. Krillin.... (I friggin hate him) I'll just leave it at that with him.

Pacing - Unlike most people, I actually enjoy the long powerups and transformations. I also enjoyed the long 5 "minute" fight between Goku and Frieza. My issue is the smaller stuff. Like Naruto, I can't stand long staredowns. A lot of scenes that just weren't needed at all getting in the way of my fights too.

Dialog - Oh dear God, from what I can remeraber with the Buu saga (mainly when Vegito came into it) that a lot of the conversations didn't sound right at all. Most of it made no sense.

Animation - Like other shonen series, it's way too inconsistent. Nowdays, it's not that big of a turnoff as it used to be for me, but if the characters look too hideous I'd probably drop it.

Thank you for being Mature enough to respect others openions, because I repesct yours beat. (all though calling mine Ill-concived is somewhat rude to say...but whatever.)

Make the fight more fun... If that's really true then that only makes me even more pissed off at him.

You really don't want to know my reason for hating Krillin, but if you insist, I don't care for characters who're there just for comic relief. And then his reliance on Goku irks me to no end. (He's a lot more tolerable in the abridged series though )

It's a discussion, dude. That's what the board's here are for. Discussing things. If we just leave every thread off with a one word response, then this place would be very boring.

I for one am enjoying this thread and the discussion it's brought forth.

This is my nuraber one problem with HXH, the way supporting characters are used and randomly tossed off makes the world seem weaker than it probably could, since the characters in it just don't get as developed as they should be. Some characters that have potential seem to get ignored more than they should, while other get way more exposure than they feel like they deserve.

Alright, I'm game. Let's see...

Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann

Strength:
*Fantastic animation and appealing character designs - I love how the entire cast moves around in a kooky, exaggerated manner.

*Generally, the over-the-top stories. I heard some say this is more or less a reverse of Neon Genesis Evangelion - it essentially being a reconstruction of the Mecha Genre pushed to the nth degree - and I generally agree. Everything is just beyond the impossible.

*Of course, Kamina who exemplifies the crazy nature of the show. For every hotblooded character you see in Anime, Kamina parodies, defines, and overemphasizes everything about them.

Weaknessess:

*Really? Honestly. I don't like Nia. I kinda think she's a bit of Mary Sue; completely sweet and innocent, adored and loved by all the male crew, has a unique character design that emphasizes the Purity Sue thing she's got going, and of course, the main character's love interest. The anime was at least aware of this that they had an entire episode of Yoko being annoyed with her and I did enjoy the idea that she was possessed and evil-ish during the second half, but it doesn't last. I also don't really cater much to the overall saccharine-ladden characters; I can't stand all that much cute.

*Honestly, as much as I liked the last battle, I'm actually not too keen a fan of numerous characters - minor or main - just suddenly dying off for a major body count to show how serious this all is. I much prefer meaningful deaths.

Digimon Tamers

Strengths:

*Gorgeous animation (excluding the dated CGI), probably the best of the Digi-series. The eye designs on the main kiRAB? Lovely. There's something soulful about that.

*Strong story and character development. The latter especially. I really got tied into how the shy, naive Takato became an exceptional leader, pacifist Henry realizing that violence may be wrong, but fighting for loved ones isn't, or how Rika turned from an anti-social, cold she-warrior into a much caring girl for her frienRAB, family, and Digimon (best shown when she switched her broken heart T-Shirt for a unbroken one), and of course, Jeri who suffered a great deal of trauma and tragedy, but overcomes them.

Heck, even the adults grow and expand, especially the original developers of the Digimon. Even minor ones such as Takato's parents' acceptance of his chosen status was heartwarming.

*The D-Reaper. I absolutely love the design and uncanny valley feel for it. It's a haunting, dangerous, and silent foe. The D-Reaper Jeri alone is nightmare fuel and just magnificently designed.

*Runaway Locomon: My favorite Digimon Movie. Contains great character development and story expansion for Rika and is all-around excellent for it. Though I am slightly biased - Rika is my favorite character.

Cons:

*Though the main characters and Jeri had significant development, the others didn't. Kenta, Suzie, Kazu, they were all left out in the cold. Though the writer had no intention at first to make them into Chosen Digi-kiRAB, their lack of development made them more then glorified extras. They were kind to at least have episode-a-day-plot with 'em though/

*Ryu. I'm fully aware he's a different Digidestined whose rules are different from the others, but I think he's a Gary Stu. He's perfect, he knows what he's doing, and he even gets a Mega Form when the others besides the major three gets nothing. Worse, he's made out to be Rika's love interest and practically plays and constantly goes about how he's the better "Digimon King" then she is. Unlike Rika who grew out of such pompous behavior, he keeps it throughout and worse, she eventually develops hints of romance at him. Argh. This is a reason why I prefer the manga addition; he appears in one chapter and leaves. The End.
