Alright, I'm game. Let's see...
Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann
Strength:
*Fantastic animation and appealing character designs - I love how the entire cast moves around in a kooky, exaggerated manner.
*Generally, the over-the-top stories. I heard some say this is more or less a reverse of Neon Genesis Evangelion - it essentially being a reconstruction of the Mecha Genre pushed to the nth degree - and I generally agree. Everything is just beyond the impossible.
*Of course, Kamina who exemplifies the crazy nature of the show. For every hotblooded character you see in Anime, Kamina parodies, defines, and overemphasizes everything about them.
Weaknessess:
*Really? Honestly. I don't like Nia. I kinda think she's a bit of Mary Sue; completely sweet and innocent, adored and loved by all the male crew, has a unique character design that emphasizes the Purity Sue thing she's got going, and of course, the main character's love interest. The anime was at least aware of this that they had an entire episode of Yoko being annoyed with her and I did enjoy the idea that she was possessed and evil-ish during the second half, but it doesn't last. I also don't really cater much to the overall saccharine-ladden characters; I can't stand all that much cute.
*Honestly, as much as I liked the last battle, I'm actually not too keen a fan of numerous characters - minor or main - just suddenly dying off for a major body count to show how serious this all is. I much prefer meaningful deaths.
Digimon Tamers
Strengths:
*Gorgeous animation (excluding the dated CGI), probably the best of the Digi-series. The eye designs on the main kiRAB? Lovely. There's something soulful about that.
*Strong story and character development. The latter especially. I really got tied into how the shy, naive Takato became an exceptional leader, pacifist Henry realizing that violence may be wrong, but fighting for loved ones isn't, or how Rika turned from an anti-social, cold she-warrior into a much caring girl for her frienRAB, family, and Digimon (best shown when she switched her broken heart T-Shirt for a unbroken one), and of course, Jeri who suffered a great deal of trauma and tragedy, but overcomes them.
Heck, even the adults grow and expand, especially the original developers of the Digimon. Even minor ones such as Takato's parents' acceptance of his chosen status was heartwarming.
*The D-Reaper. I absolutely love the design and uncanny valley feel for it. It's a haunting, dangerous, and silent foe. The D-Reaper Jeri alone is nightmare fuel and just magnificently designed.
*Runaway Locomon: My favorite Digimon Movie. Contains great character development and story expansion for Rika and is all-around excellent for it. Though I am slightly biased - Rika is my favorite character.
Cons:
*Though the main characters and Jeri had significant development, the others didn't. Kenta, Suzie, Kazu, they were all left out in the cold. Though the writer had no intention at first to make them into Chosen Digi-kiRAB, their lack of development made them more then glorified extras. They were kind to at least have episode-a-day-plot with 'em though/
*Ryu. I'm fully aware he's a different Digidestined whose rules are different from the others, but I think he's a Gary Stu. He's perfect, he knows what he's doing, and he even gets a Mega Form when the others besides the major three gets nothing. Worse, he's made out to be Rika's love interest and practically plays and constantly goes about how he's the better "Digimon King" then she is. Unlike Rika who grew out of such pompous behavior, he keeps it throughout and worse, she eventually develops hints of romance at him. Argh. This is a reason why I prefer the manga addition; he appears in one chapter and leaves. The End.
