The Usual Suspects

Lots of people have told me to rent a copy of this film as I haven't seen it. Is it really as good as all my frienRAB are making out, or is it just overrated tripe like American Beauty?
 
Don't worry - this is a classic thriller and none of that american beauty sh*te. Certainly worth a rent if you've never seen it before - just make sure that you aren't droping off to sleep at the same time cause you'll need to follow the story very carefully :)
 
Always thought it was really overrated myself. It is quite good, and worth renting, just not the classic that everybody and their dog seems to say it is IMO.
 
I agree. It's just a great big shaggy dog story, really. Yes, I could watch it seventeen million times and try to figure out precisely what happened - but why bother? What actually happened just isn't very interesting. For neo-noir thrillers, I prefer Christopher Nolan's first film, Following, shot for about five grand with mates when he was just out of university. The twists might not be as shocking as in The Usual Suspects, but they stand up better to repeated viewings. :)
 
A really nice film, the best part was the criminal lineup, sheer genius :D

This film is sh*te. An earlier poster talks about you can watch over and over trying to work out the clues, well you can't because you never get to see the clues. You are in affect conned yourself into believing that you could have worked it out.
 
This film is a cheat. It's no better than those old serials you used to get at matinees with the cliff hanging ending which used to change at the start of the episode the next week!
 
Yeah go on and then when you've watched it and know the ending watch it again and see if you can actually see the clues. You quickly find that you can't, so it's not possible to work the ending out from the film. Conclusion - the films a cheat. The guys who made this should seriously have watched a few Agatha Christie films to see how it should be done.
 
Of course there are clues. There aren't physical clues like "foot prints" and "bits of cloth" but there are narrative and acting clues.

I don't want to go into it as it'll mess up the film for those who haven't seen it. So please don't try to go into details for this reason.

I don't take any pleasure from working out how a films going to end, in fact it spoils it for me. I worked out '6th sense' and 'the others' and so the endings didn't have as much impact for me.
When 'the usual suspects' got to the money shot I hadn't seen it coming so it had the 'wow' factor.
 
It only has the "wow" factor because you've been cheated. I didn't rate 6th Sense either because it was too obvious for a seasoned viewer of these type of films to suss out.
 
you are not "cheated" by the usual suspects-you are never supposed to see the clues at the end!-that isnt the point-you have to re-watch it to see clues in the performances-its more subtle than a standard "whodunnit"
