The toplessness debate?

I'm sure this has been done a million times, so if that bothers you then move on to the next question.

Not long ago I asked a question in the law and ethics section about whether or not it was illegal to sunbathe topless in your own backyard. A couple of people were horrified that a woman would do such a thing. I grew up in a country where it was very popular to be topless at the beach or public pools. No one thought anything of it. Now I live in the US and I had no idea how offensive people find female breasts.

It can't be just about the breasts themselves because I see men walking around topless all the time. Some of them have bigger ones than me!

Without going into the pruney, wrinkly, skin cancer debate, can you tell me what the deal is here?
Why is it not fair? That doesn't make any sense.

religion will be the bullsh---t reason people will give for that
but the real reason is we are a culture of profit for the wealthy-
female breasts cause sexual thoughts in men - sexual thoughts distract men from doing their work and making greedy people more rich

In your backyard , you generally have to be out of sight of your neighbors etc or out of sight from public eye. There are many nude beaches, rivers, lakes and places in general where it is totally legal to be nude outdoors with other people all the time. Love it myself

Going topless shows that you have no respect for others.

People say "If you don't like it, don't look" I'd agree with that but when you're out in public you'll be seen without someones consent, they have to see your nude body before they can avoid the sight of you.

Who cares what you do in your own house or your own yard but just have some respect for other people in public.

It's just because people are not used in seeing women like that. Today, there are already public beaches allowing topless sunbathing for girls

There is no good / logical reason for it, imo. Men show their nipples freely, yet a woman can show almost all her breast, but not her nipple - so there is a clear double standard here.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't go around topless myself, and it would be a bit weird to see topless women out on the street - but it is a cultural double standard nonetheless :-)

I agree with u.. men are found topless and no one cares, but with women people raise objections.
Maybe it's because seeing the breasts sexually attracts men, so they are advised not to be topless?

I don't think people take offense to women walking around topless, but in America, women's breasts are just another private part that people shouldn't be able to see. Now, it's not a private as the downstairs parts, but still. That's just our society, it's inappropriate.

If yiou want topless go to the French Riviera.

Personally, theres nothing wrong with topless, or bottomless, for that matter, but our society has always been up tight about it.

Americans are prudes when it comes to sex. Its so odd because we're such an oversexed society, and yet, at the same time, we're such prudes about it too. Personally, I see nothing wrong with a woman going topless in a setting where men can go topless (beach, pools, ocean boardwalk, back yard). And, personally, I have gone topless at beaches and when I have my own yard I will go topless in the backyard. American really needs to get over its aversion of breasts and the idea that they're "dirty" and "perverted." Or that seeing them will somehow traumatize children. Because this mindset then leads into the breast feeding mentality as well--a lot of Americans have problems with women publicly breast feeding because they think the breast is dirty and should be hidden. Its all totally ridiculous and childish, imo.

Cool question!
I'm married now, 8 years ago when I met my boyfriend, we went on holiday to spain and he suggested that seeing as other women were doing it that i should sunbathe topless! I was a little bit taken aback, although i have quite nice perky ones, they are quite small and not a big deal. I've done it eversince if others are doing it - safety in numbers!
Technically I believe women's chesticles are considered to be external genitalia and men's aren't so unitl that changes we still have to put up with the double standard BS.

A lot of americans are more prudish than people in other countries. Its totally normal to get your breasts out in the garden or the beach here.

people should be able to be naked on a naked beach or in their garden.
topless should be allowd anywhere

Cause its not fair for hot ladies with big jugs to walk around with them freely. Its distracting and looks pretty delicious. Glad I'm not a male and living where you lived or I'd be in a shitton of trouble and would get heels to the face.

Those are for sex only. You grab em from behind while ya ride.
