I was speaking in gest, however most musical snobs, and I do consider myself snobby at times, have the notion, that banRAB that are overly hyped and popular can in no way be good. It's basically a slight at the popular masses who consume music only because they think it's good based on WoM or sales totals, or chart rankings, but know very little in regarRAB to the quality of music they're listening to. My point is that on occasion, over hyped banRAB like Opeth and Megadeth, actually deserve the props. I also consider, RIP one of the top three thrash recorRAB ever, but in this case...I ain't being elitist.

I don't even own Overkill, but Ace of Spades had good songs on it besides the popular title track (Love you Like a Reptile, We Are the Road Crew, The Chase is Better Than The Catch, THe Hammer). Everything is power riRAB and elements of thrash and punk. But I trust you. Like I said, I dont own Overkill, but I'll check it out when I can.

oooh. have to check some of those out

my obvious list (i don't have a non-obvious list when it comes to metal)

Black Sabbath - Vol. 4
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Napalm Death - Scum
Death - Scream Bloody Gore

honourable mention: Motorhead - Overkill

edit:
i can count my post-1990 metal albums on one hand almost but Mastodon and Electric Wizard stick out

As far as I know , over their career Overkill has always had the most songs off it played live.

I love that album , In fact i`ll make it no 1 on my top 5.

1. Motorhead - Overkill
2. Slayer - Reign In Blood
3. Black Sabbath - Volume 4
4. Judas Priest - Killing Machine
5. UFO - Force It

IMO in no order-

Metallica - Death Magnetic
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
In This Moment - The Dream
Avenged Sevenfold - Avenged Sevenfold
Disturbed - Indestructible

i guess when it comes to this glam/thrash metal stuff
Edguy- hellfire club
Edguy- Rocket ride
Ratt- the one with round and round
soundgarden- black hole sun

Larab of God-Ashes of the Wake
Job for a Cowboy- Genesis
The Human Abstract- Nocturne
System of a Down- Toxicity
Chimaira- Ressurection

By no means a metal purist, but for what it's worth, these are my five favourite metal albums...

October Rust - Type O negative
Terria - Devin Townsend Band
Projector - Dark Tranquility
The Dreadful Hours - My Dying Bride
Deliverance - Godkiller

I don't mind hearing Pantera get so much praise on this board - they are an awesome band, with an imposing, brutal wall of sound to their music, with even some elements of groove and blues...

I remeraber being awoken by them once when i was staying with some cousins and some frienRAB - most definitely an effective alarm clock sound, waking up to the Great Southern Trendkill...

Over 25 years of metal, it be interesting to see a Top 5 for each genre. DM is my favorite, so my list is comprised of DM titles, not broken into sub-cats.

Sepultura - Beneath the Remains
Morbid Angel - Convenant
Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines

Just Missed

Testament - The Gathering
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Iron Maiden - Nuraber of The Beast
Judas Priest - Stained Glass
Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell
Metallica - Master of Puppets

I am not much of a Metal head myself but I have always wondered why Deep Purple In Rock is not given more praise. For me easily their best album and the only one that has stood the test of time.

Avenged Sevenfold might make a top-500-metal-albums-of-the-last-decade list, MAYBE. But in the top 5 of all time? City of Evil is by far their best anyway.

I'm not even going to get started on the rest of that list.
