"The Simpsons Movie" Talkback (Spoilers)

I hate to say it, but to a degree, i was dissapointed. I really expected a better movie, but what can i do

3/4 stars

Loved Spider Pig, and Super Secret Guest Apperance and Super Secret Grim Reaper Call..

I hated the intro, even the theme song was shrtened for the movie.., plus they rushed into it to begin with

OH ,and they had traielrs for the Chipmunks and Horton, both of which i have no intrest(Besides Steve Carrel in Horton), and frankly i'm disgusted by the Chipmunks.

The theatre was packed when I saw it last night. And yes I got to see The Dark Knight teaser with it as well. I have to say I was really surprised with the movie. It was better than I thought it'd be. My better half (he's also a Simpsons fan) really liked it as well. There were alot of gags throughout and it was definately worth it to stay through the credits. It's going to be odd going back to the show after seeing The Simpsons so well animated in this movie. And I'm so glad to hear it doing really well.

I got back a few hours ago, and I loved it. There were a couple of iffy plot moments, but I'm not complaining. I'm just glad it was as funny and enjoyable as it was. It made me forget all about the last few years of the show, which is no easy task. Pretty much everything I didn't like about the recent episodes was fixed in the movie.:D

I particularly liked a couple of little touches like the regular version of the theme song playing when Homer had his epiphany, and the little bits where the animation would go off-model and look like the first couple of seasons-- there were a few spots where it was a bit looser, and I really liked that (I prefer the older animation style, it had a lot more character).

Hopefully Season 19 will keep a few of the movie's improvements.

Bah. It was okay. Nothing really at all special, mindblowing or whatever. But seriously... Bah.
Don't bet on it. I saw it earlier when I was abroad in the UK, so I know.

Meh,

The movie to me felt like a 1, maybe 1.5 hour special on Fox.

The animation was great but the story wasn't too terribly entertaining.

The Spider Pig part would have had *MUCH MORE* impact if they wouldn't have over played it in commercials. That scene alone had the potential to be the saving grace of the movie --- again, if it wasn't over played going into it.

Agreed. If that scene was the funniest thing they could come up with to show to draw people in, they failed. MISERABLY. That's the kind of humor that ruined the Scooby Doo movies for me.

I thought the movie was hilarious, especially Homer's opening statement about it being a ripoff. But where are they going to go with a sequel? As of this movie, I now believe the Simpsons have now officially gone EVERYWHERE outside of the United States.

Aieee, it's not fair! This was my list:

The Bourne Thirdsequel
Daddy Day Camp
Those Creepy Chipmunks
Stardust
Rush Hour 3
Something with The Rock from Walt Disney (again? Has he no self-worth?)
Horton Hears a Who

Why do these things vary? Can anyone who's worked for a theater tell me?

^It all has to do with what trailers are sent with what movie. "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and "Horton Hears a Who!" will be seen with the Simpsons Movie throughout its entire run (yes, even if it's still in theaters in October), because those two came with the movie. Theaters are also sent "trailer packs", which is either three-to-four trailers from various distributors, which comes from the theater chain's corporate HQ. They usually are packaged as "PG-13 Comedy"; "Action"; "R-rated Horror", "Children's" and such. I saw the Simpsons Movie twice, the first time I got (along with Chipmunks and Horton) "Game Plan" (bad Rock flick), "Daddy Day Camp", "Stardust". This, I assumed, was the "Family" pack. No Dark Knight. The second time I got "Mr. Bean's Holiday", "Rush Hour 3", "Bourne". I assumed this was "PG-13 Comedy". Still, no Dark Knight. Why? Because Dark Knight was given to SELECT theaters. In other words, the Regal corporate that regulates our area never got the print. I think AMC got first dibs on those Dark Knight trailers. It's obvious WB wanted to get the word out, but not cause it to a point where Fox makes a gigantic amount of money on Batman fans seeing the Simpsons Movie out of intrest for the trailer. It's online, anyways...

I didn't even get Stardust. I got Mr. Bean instead of the Rock one, too. We got all those other ones, though.

I think we got the Golden Compass, though. So that's something.

But man, what crappy trailers. I wanted Dark Knight and Walk Hard, dammit. Bourne and Compass were the only half decent ones.

If you notice, Julie Kavner was using more of her actual voice in that scene with the recorded message than the cariacture of Marge. It was pretty heart wrenching to be honest.

I was not expecting clever dialogues and stories worthy of the earlier seasons, but what I did get was pretty durn good. A big, bold epic story that starts off with Springfield isolated from everyone on Earth to having it almost blown up is exciting enough (and possibly hard to top for future Simpsons episodes), but the writers did a bold, tremendous job giving side plots for each of the Simpsons family.

Bart seeks solence in Ned Flanders (who, thankfully was into his more early season self then the strict bible thumper they made him in recent ones) for a proper father, Lisa finds love (her personality also more like her earlier seasons with her protesting nature not as forceful as the show usually makes--her punching Bart in the face garnered a "YEAH!" out of me)--though I felt this wasn't emphasized well enough, Maggie...doesn't do much, but even she gets her moments, and Homer and Marge, while going through yet another marital issue dealie, felt real and honest--seeing the tear-jerking Marge's video was absolutely heartfelt (even better with Julie apparently having really choked up when she recorded this). Not to mention even some of the secondary characters had their motions (who didn't cheer when Martin finally got his justice?), but no Sideshow Bob? Blasphemy! New characters Russ Cargill was absolutely hilarious, but medicine lady, despite moving Homer's character, was a pointless addition.

Some jokes and gags fall flat, but others made me laugh and that says a lot of the many cartoons on theaters which can't even attempt humor even if they tried. I also loved that the story generally flowed pretty well and how certain elements later played a vital part (the motorcycle, wedding tape, sinkhole, etc). And the animation is gorgeous with minor irks here and there.

In short, it's not perfect, but it's great and that's good enough for me.
8/10

There were three parts of this movie that I thought were amazing:

1. The video from Marge, great Julie Kavner performance.
2. The unbelievably creepy Spider-Pig song dream sequence.
3. The gag with the family who looks just like the picture of the Simpsons Bart changed.

I thought it was pretty good, over-all, but expected better after the great reviews.

Also really missed Mr. Burns...his only moment in the film was given away entirely in the trailer.

Yes, very (not really). But don't worry, you can rent seasons of the Simpsons on DVD! I reccomend using Netflix. But what season to start with? The first season introduces the characters and their relationships, but its humor is weak when compared to later seasons, plus the characters' personalities were still being developed, and they act somewhat differently than they would in later seasons. Season 2 is where the animation, humor, and characters really start to blossom, but it is a titch more emotional than later seasons (which can be good or bad, depending on your point of view). Season 3 is where the feel, tone, and type of humor of the show really becomes what it is for the rest of the series. Seasons 3-8 are all very good (season 2 too). Season 9 isn't bad, but season 10 is somewhat lackluster (haven't seen most of season 10 in a while, so I'm going by somewhat vague memories).

Saw it today and thought it was pretty dang entertaining. Some of the jokes may of fallen flat, but there were far more hits then misses. Also liked the amount of times they poked fun at the government, Hollywood and themselves( yes we advertise tv during movies now). Overall I would give it a 4/5.

To jump into The Simpsons, get season 5 first. Then get 4 & 3 second. If you don't like it by then, then it's not for you.

By "get", I mean rent or buy. Whatever's cool with you.

The Simpsons is on syndication in most cities like 3 or 4 times a day, sometimes more. How could you not have seen an episode in 15+ years? Hell, I dislike Friends and I've seen at least 5 full episodes accidentally.
