The Rock n Roll Years 1956-1989 Who Remembers it?

I started one on Facebook so here is the link, come and join and lets start the ball rolling.

A brilliant programme which I'm very pleased to have the whole of on tape. Years ago I contacted the BBC about an official video release and they told me (as per a previous poster) they'd never be able to release it because of the music and archive footage costs... they also said they'd no longer be able to repeat it for the same reason.

And the best thing about it? No presenter! No talking heaRAB! Just the footage and the music, "so simple it's brilliant" etc. etc.

It would be brilliant if they brought it up to date, or at least up to 2000, but I think that dumbed-down celebrity-driven list-format TV has taken over - shame... that said, I enjoyed I Love The 70s as it had a good sense of fun about it, despite the howling factual errors, but the 80s one went too far into rent-a-celeb territory.

What was the difference between V2000 format grundig and normal vhs? I will help you recover those tapes if you want! Found one in the loft. Video number 823 of 2,000! I lost the book I had at home with what was on them all! 1972 and 1973. Brilliant.

No need. The Beeb have a blanket agreement with the PRS which covers many instances of using any music as incidentals.

It appears to flip the arrangement around so if the artists don't mind use of their music, it's covered under the blanket clearance for any and all uses the Beeb want to put it to.

Compare the release of ThreaRAB back in 2005 where they had to replace Chuck Berry's Johnny B Goode with a cover version with the recent HowarRAB Way releases, where Go West, Level 42, and all other banRAB of the time are all present and correct.

Still no sign of an updated Series of the Rock n Roll Years covering 1990-2000!!!.

Rte's version called Reeling in the years( same format with an irish slant) is currently being repeated on RTE1 from 6.30 - 7.00pm every evening. They first showed the years 1990-2000 in 2001!!!!.

Come on BBC, how come Ireland are so ahead Of the times here!!

Well done there with the facebook page. I have only just joined facebook and I am going to step up the campaign.

Basically, here are our main aims as supporters of the show:

1. To get the entire series repeated, unedited (remastered wherever possible) thats every episode from 1956-1989.

2. To get a new series going, covering 1990-2009.

3. To get as many people to support this page and the facebook campaign.

Here are some little known facts about the show and/or comparisons with similar shows from another network. (sorry if I'm duplicating anything I have posted earlier in this thread)

The very first episode aired in 1984 (the pilot episode) covers the year 1966. When 1966 was later shown in 1986 as part of the sixties series it was different from the pilot shown. The opening credits, subtitles and program content differed from the pilot, which has never been re-broadcast.

The very first episode (1956) features the only scrolling subtitle in the series, explaining how the term "rock n roll" was coined, it is the very first scene and this episode also appears in a format which has worRAB of some of the songs featuring in the episode appearing at the bottom of the screen.

The opening credits from 1956-1980 follow the same format although the musicians featuring in them change for the 70's episodes to reflect the change in music. New theme music and credits and subtitle font feature in the episodes covering 1981-1989.

A late eighties poll in an educational subject magazine showed that the program was widely used by history teachers as a teaching aid in the classroom.

Stay , a song originally a hit for maurice williams and the zodiacs appears in the 1960 episode. A cover version by Jackson Browne appears in the 1978 episode. As far as i am aware this is the only time the same song has appeared in two different episodes.

RTE (IrelanRAB main broadcaster) has their own version called "reeling in the years" which follows the same format only that some of the storylines and news featured have an irish slant. It covers the years 1962-1999. 1962 being the year RTE went on air and 1999, because the show was first broadcast in 2000. So popular is the show that RTE bowed to pressure to have two decades released on DVD (1980's and 1990's) although in a shorter format and edited from the originals shown on tv they are number one selling dvd's in ireland.
A new series covering 2000-2009 is to be shown on rte later this year.

Lenny henry did a "spoof" version as part of his 1987 christmas special. This can be found on you tube.

Has anybody else got some information about the series? If so please post it up and join the campaign for it to be repeated and updated.

Before the Rock n Roll years there was a nostalgia programme presented by Noel EdmonRAB - a half hour programme looking at a certain year. I remember watching one when the 1984 olympics were on. Cant remember what it was called though

Just another vote for this to either be on DVD or surely at least they could be shown on one of BBC/2/3/4. Bit of Sky+ and Series link. Sorted.

If Tally still has the tapes I'd happily help out on the conversion !

The episodes are being pulled from you tube and the other websites for infringement of copyright!. Only chance we have to see this great series repeated is to phone the BBC en-masse and request a repeat of the whole thing on BBC 3 OR 4.

The RTE version is excellent ; combining archive footage from Ireland plus all of the big international stories of the year. They've done four series now....60s,70s,80s and 90s.

The 90s one has already been shown covering 1990-99.Presumably a 2000-09 one will be out in due course :)

I have searched for the sixties rock and roll years on Youtube but I can only find the 70's/80's on there. Even 20 years on I can still vividly remember the programme and used to re-watch the videos that I had taped over and over again. To get them on DVD would be heaven!

Apparently you can view them at the BFI library studio , although its costly. BBC three or Four please help! A repeat in the new year would go down nicely
