The Road to Corrie (BBC4)

Only problem with that programme was that I put it on for a bit of background while I did some work, But I ended up spending the whole time sat watching it and doing no work.
 
I only watch the soaps sporadically, but am always interested to see how older shows came into being.

This was brilliant as an insight into the beginnings of Corrie. It was also one of the best one off dramas I've seen all year.

Jessie Wallace as most people agree did steal the show, but not to the detriment of the other fine actors who appeared.

I'd like to think that they chose "Coronation" over "Jubilee"
due to the latter being a celebration of length of time a monarch has been power, the former being the beginning of a new monarchy.
 
Was a nice touch to have Lynda Baron's Violet Carson repeating Ena's "no eclairs" line for emphasis... If I remember rightly there's a story that as much as eight or nine years later there was a scene in an episode where Ena was shown eating (or possibly buying) an eclair, when it had been inferred in episode one that she didn't like them, and an eagle-eyed viewer wrote in to point out the continuity error :)

I had thought this was a fairly well-known anecdote in Corrie fandom although I can't actually find a reference to it on Google right now. I'm sure I read it in one of the various tie-in books.
 
I thought it was a great piece of drama. All who were acting in it was excellent and a few surprised me at how good they were. I watched this yesterday and the time few over and I have today just watched it again to put it onto disc for my mother in law missed it and the time just few over again.

Like everyone else on here I wished it was a bit longer, but I think they did it on purpose as the saying goes "less is more". I hope they do get some awards for the drama.

I liked who at the end of the credits were they put up the original photos of the people who were involved against the actors and actress names.

BBC 4 didn't have any voice over at the end so got to hear the end tune on the end credits.
 
Throughly enjoyed this. I thought Jessie Wallace was marvellous as Elsie Tanner. Linda Barron was great as Ena Sharples.
I was only seven when Coronation Street was first shown and remember watching it with my Mum. This all brought back some great memories. Well done BBC 4 for this most enjoyable drama. Only criticism it was over too quickly and left me wanting more.
 
WOW! loved this last night!!! Im only 19 so dont know that much about the start of corrie, but it entertained me all the way through and was one of the best TV dramas iv seen for years!!
 
I was thinking the same thing earlier - is it just a sign of the times that the old people don't play such a role anymore, or is it that the programme makers are trying to glam it up to compete with the likes of Hollyoaks?

In the original cast most of the characters were middle aged or old. The young were in the minority. Ken Barlow, Dennis and Linda Tanner and Lucille Hewitt are the only ones I can remember from the original cast.
 
Tony Warren based the characters on people he knew from his own childhood, i.e the 1940's, when many men were away fighting and the women led hard lives trying to keep going on the home fromt. Even when it started in 1960 Corrie was a bit of a throwback to an already vanishing age

Having said that, even in the 1960's every street had its Ena Sharples - trouble was, round our way, it was my mum! :eek:

Loved this drama - even the Shadows hits were exact to the time frame :D
 
I thought that Ena auditioned with her hairnet on because she'd just had her hair done and didn't want to ruin it? Then they decided to keep it? Or did I dream this?
