The return of My Pet Monster?

Recently, an ad aired for the My Pet Monster plush doll sans the orange handcuffs. Does this mean a comeback?

If anyone remembers, My Pet Monster was a short-lived cartoon series that aired in 1986-87 about a boy and his sister that keeps the said monster and hides his existence from the world.

I remember watching this on video as a toddler.

Interesting comeback choice, if it's true. I don't remember much about the cartoon, but I certainly had my own "Pet Monster" when I was little. My grandma thought it was the ugliest thing and couldn't understand why I loved it so much. :D

It was a toy first. I had one but it creeped me out too much and had to get rid of it. I also remember seeing some of a bad straight-to-video movie based on the toy too.

The cartoon, at least the episodes I saw on VHS a few years ago, didn't live up to the nostalgia. BTW, Canada's getting a full series release for those who live up north. I'm sure it can be imported as well.

No handcuffs? But that was the coolest part! I mean, that was their main selling point. He could break his handcuffs. What the hell is the point of My Pet Monster if he doesn't have handcuffs he can break?

I not only had My Pet Monster, I also had the spinoffs My Pet Football Monster and My Pet Dog Monster.

Wait a minute. You were scared of a stuffed animal?

Between that, the post Child Play's My Buddy dolls, and the Cabbage Patch Kid that chowed down on that little girl, it was a bad time to own a doll back then.

I had a cousin who used to have one in his room. Every time I'd go visit, it would freak me out for some reason.

EDIT: looking at that X-entertainment link, I'm almost certain that I saw that live-action video of it before somewhere, too. I have a strange feeling that's what caused my fear of that doll. For some reason, "purple slime" keeps coming to mind when I look at those pictures...

My little brother loved his. He lost the handcuffs but it's still around somewhere in our house, I think. I remember there being a cartoon and I have a very vague memory of watching the live action movie.

I was one of those "overactive imagination" kids. I could dream up something and then be convinced it was real, or at least possible. So, I kept imagining it coming to life or something. I also had a picture of Mickey Mouse on my wall that I swore that the eyes on it would move during the night. :o

I think I might remember seeing the live action movie a long, long time ago.
Way off topic but I had a poster of the seven dwarfs that I thought it did the same thing.

The live action video seemed like a pilot to a never produced version of the series before they decided to make a cartoon version instead. It had all the ingredients of an ongoing series, including introducing what would have been the main villain at the end of the episode. I was always hoping there would be a sequel or something, but there never was.

Didn't the old one have a voice chip? I thought he says stuff when he snaps his chains apart.

Every 2-3 years I see a shipment of my pet monster plushies in stores like Big Lots for some reason. It's like there are countless defunct toy factories across the country blindly throwing out 80s toys right before they die.
