The Restaurant 2009

Hello all,

so nice to be back for the new series - the highs and lows of last year were great (gas leaks, rude customers, mango whizz, train cooking, picinics at Henley) fingers crossed for this series.

The cock(tail) twins, look like fine entertainment, as do bodger and badger - than man and wife who look identical are weird.

Wonder if we will get any contestants on here this year....it all got a bit hairy last year

I don't think I'd blame them for not being fully committed, I doubt the contract with Raymond gave them much scope to be able to run it as they would want.

They were a nice couple and hope they do well in their next venture without Raymond and crew peering over their shoulder.

Absolutely, I thought the same. She was going on and on about how worried she was about him. If it was that bad he should have gone to lie down or gone to the dr after preparing the food and she should have gone to do the deli task alone and on time ... that's what I would have done.

Yes, the only really acceptable outcome would be for the judges to choose to go into business with Chris alone. When Raymond made his amazing observation to the couples at the end 'Chris, I think you are the best cook' ... it was like hello ... of course he is ... and really what's his competition anyway? A guy who doesn't cook and a guy who cooks TV dinners?

What ideas  Serve alcohol and provide finger food - hardly ground breaking - I can walk 5 minutes from my office and get exactly that in about 3 different places - round here we call them pubs and bars

An excellent summery and the whole post covers it all.

As for the bit quoted above: How can RB see the result as a positive but completely ignore the negative that the disaster was totally made by them?

You could give them some praise if something beyond their control happened and they came back with something, but they had to come up with something to cover up their major f'ck up! Why was that ignored or seen as better than Chris who didn't come up with a fix as he never f'cked up in the first place?

There is something very fishy going on here: It's not just a matter of opinion. How can so many obvious negative things be ignored when it's JJ and James and yet they ignore the positives in everyone else.

What are they trying to say? Chris should have messed up his dish so that he could fix it rather than just cook it correctly in the first place? - Only that is f'cking mental nonsense!

There isn't an argument that works.

A total fix!

He only managed that by luck, because he only had minutes to cook it.

If he had more time and it was left to his judgment, my guess is he would have ruined that too.

They are not being firmly told where they are going wrong so they can rectify it either. It was far better when they were given the third degree and put into a challenge.

I just watched the final and wonder what the hell happened this series!
There was noone atall that was worthwhile investing/working with.
I bet the 2 other judges were kicking themselves into saying they'd invest too this year, the other years that might have worked!

There is no way I'd go to somewhere where the 'winners' ran a restaurant. I'm not saying Nathan and thingy were amazing, they weren't they were just run of the mill really, but they were better than the picnic boys.

Everything went wrong for them in the end episode and they won? HOW?

I think it's about time to change the way the show works. From episode one you could see that is was messed up. That mother/daughter team? That deprived someone of a place and that couple that basically gave cheap salmon with a little salad? How did they last?
I really liked them running a high street restaurant, it was much much more realistic. In fact it made me go and visit Yo Sushi!
Choose x number of groups. Give them all a resturant and let them run it for say 4-5 months. You can still give them the seasonal produce tests, the have a Spanish night, lovers night (although those are stupid) but have them actually running a business. How can they possible know they are capable if they are only open for 2-3 days a week for a few weeks? Make them actually run a restaurant, see how much money they make or lose, don't make them do the stupid tasks like doing banquets and things like cookery classes and presentations. They would NOT be doing those things if they were running a restaurant so stop testing them on it. Get them actually running a restaurant and seeing what that actually entails. That would be much more realistic and harder on them whilst also testing them in many ways and over many services.

Very poor series this year.
