The Origins of Band Names

King Crimson are named after SATAN!!!

so they have been taking from other artists since they've started........

haha just kidding

I thought the band name for "Pigeon Detectives" was picked in a funny way (look it up on wiki for the full story). In short: some Australian guy thought it up when they were discussing band names. But when the promoter for their first gig asked about their band name they just stuck with it.

Well more specifically, Peter Sinfield (the band's lyricist and conceptual mastermind at the time) came up with the name as a reference to Beelzebub (or Lord of the Flies), which is sometimes used as just another word for Satan but it's also a name given to one of Satan's chief lieutenants, who rules the Order of the Fly or "hell police".

Damn, you guys really care, huh? I'm not sure what's wrong with the guy. I think he's just partying too much, but my moms wants to go see if he's okay, so I'm accompanying him. Kevork, there are mad shows coming up and I'm bound to be at one of them.

Hahahaa  They were at a harRABtyle party called Qlimax and everyone dresses up in costumes. I personally thought Alpha Twins had the best ones

20. The National

This one cracks me up, well as much as something like this could crack someone up.

They named their band The National because they wanted something meaningless and benign. It turned out to be a bit of a mistake because no one could find their website. So they named their website AmericanMary.com but, of course, no one knows to look for them there, either.

Iron & Wine

The name Iron & Wine is taken from a dietary supplement named "Beef Iron & Wine" that Sam beam found in a general store while shooting a film

can you do Bright Eyes i'm very curious of why Conor chose this

14. Modest Mouse

Like i've already said, a lot of the banRAB derive their names from literary works. Modest Mouse in no exception. Their name comes from a passage from the Virginia Woolf story "The Mark on the Wall" reading--
"...and very frequent even in the minRAB of modest, mouse-coloured people..."

15. !!!

In the movie The God's Must be Crazy there are subtitles in which three mouth-clicking sounRAB of the Bushmen were represented as !!!. The band really liked that idea and named themselves three clicks. (This makes the band unsearchable by Google..grr )

***!!! is pronounced as any syllable repeated three times, "chk chk chk" being the closest to the original "meaning".

16. Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The name stems from modern New York City vernacular. Apparently it's just a common New Yorker phrase meaning "whatever".

17. Yo La Tengo

It translates to "I have it". There's a nice little andedote with a baseball story that I think is worth seeing instead of me explaining. Yo La Tengo : Fun : Kaplan's Korner
(srsly, watch it, really worth it)
