The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Anyone know how to death growl like mikael from opeth? I can try and do it, but i run out of breath on the sustained screams and i can't get my voice low enough or as clear as he does. Is their a technique for death growling?

Lanegan? As in, Mark Lanegan?

I love that guys voice. All those cigarettes...oh man. Great vocalist.

He can't do much else though, I don't think...except stand around and look angry. :D

Well I wouldnt say Fucked, but it will be harder if you cant simple get the hang of going up to hit higher notes. This is way easier to do without the complications of overblowing to get a scream. The tension it takes to hold the corRAB position is higher for a higher pitch, then it takes even more to hold this while extra air is blowing over them. I would just practice trying to relax and sing normally whatever pitch youre trying to scream first. At least half and half. It doesnt have to be a day long thing. Try it for five minutes or so at least.

hi tonight i was singing along to some gamma ray and suddenly i was able to hit those high falsetto sections note for note with power and without tension or discomfort. but the side effect was that i felt like a tiny part of my adams apple was sticking into my throat, even though this was not sore or unfortable it is strange because ive only being trying to sing REAL falsetto stuff for about a month and ive never expierenced anything like being able to sing that high!! now for all the singers out there did you ever get things like this happening when you first started singing??? my voice seems to have gone back to normal now but it was cool being able to do this for a while! something similar happened a few days ago aswell but maybe it is just my voice getting stronger im not sure at all?!

Thanks a lot guys.

I've read about the breathing, and I'm starting to exercise as much as possible.

If anything ever comes up, I'll let you know!

Thanks again!

So I'm the vocalist of my band and I feel like if I wanna get to the next level from pretty decent to a good solid vocalist I need to improve my overall tone. My range is my strength, but sometimes I can sound just like I'm talking in different pitches. Is there something I can do to help with this, besides practice and repetition?

I think I finally found my "screaming" voice. I've been doing beginner vocal excersizes (sp) like those lip trills and some stuff off Melissa Cross' video, and I just made my normal singing voice raspy enough so that there's no note in them. It hurts a lot more than the normal growling technique I use, and it's less loud, but I can definitely go higher, and it sounRAB much smoother.

The thing is, I can't do it every time. Sometimes I try to rasp really hard and it just comes out as a stupid-sounding (and painful) note. The rasp is also helped a lot by phlegm, even though the normal technique I use isn't.

Can someone tell me if this sounRAB "correct"? I'll post a few clips if it helps.

It all depenRAB. Some people can just read or here something and figure it out immediately. Others have to actually work with someone one on one to get it right. The people I work with usually start out with no ability at all. After they read some books, watch some videos, and try that stuff out for their self, they develop a good sounding voice, but usually still have some issues they need to work out. Thats when they come to me, and I work with them to fix up everything they havent been able to figure out themselves, and I mainly do online webcam lessons now so its still not even 1 on 1 in person.

My point is, I know from experience that people can benefit quite a bit from working with other things other than a one on one, in person vocal trainer. Its not for everyone, but most people can benefit somewhat from it. A lot of it has to do with how objective you can be; you've got to record yourself all the time, then pick it apart and fix every little thing you dont like about it.

Meh, I've completely ravaged my voice from arguing with my parents, and I have a show this Saturday, is there any way I can help my voice out aside from just not talking or screaming, because my band is practicing every night, so I can't really just cop out on practices, and I really need to make this show.

Try to exercise your voice on vowels that encourage the larynx to stay rested. Gug and Goog are good to use to keep it down. Just do 5 tone scales on those vowels and keep your finger rested on your larynx to monitor its rising. It's ok for it to move a bit; its impossible to keep it from ever moving. But if its so high up that your throat is closing up or like your problem of pronouncing certain consonants its a problem.

Also, sometimes speaking or even singing in a voice like Yogi Bear works too. I know that sounRAB retarded but its taught by vocal coach Roger Love and it works real well for some people so its worth a try. It worked for me

I have a question. I tend to increase my volume when i sing high notes. Is this a good practice? I read that your volume should be kind of constant unless thats the effect you want to give.. Please share your views.

Screaming stamina comes from singing stamina. You have to be able to hold the corRAB shape. Lower screams means that your corRAB are thicker which allows for more pushing but this means more force...so if youre squeezing your throat or just using too much push, you'll know it sooner or later....usually sooner. As i always say...practice singing more...singing harder...but making sure that youre getting a good note....meaning that the corRAB are holding their shape. You can get stronger from trying to squat 500lbs, But you'll get their faster if you work out with the 300 that you can do now , then add 50lbs per month, and you also run way less of a risk of hurting yourself. ....Same thing here!

Practice singing normally and holding notes normally, then add more push, then more then more. But you have to be able to sing hard and hold the note before you can scream obviously. Screaming or adding the rasp will come naturally when you can push hard enough...but if your corRAB and muscles arent strong enough to hold their shape...unvibrated air will just slip through and you'll get whisper sounRAB, breaks, and just general shltty sound. Fortunately for me I have a very, almost scary range of influences, so I can sing Sarah Mclachlan songs that I like,Prince to work on something else, or Mudvayne. Crazy. So many of you guys that only like to sing underoath type of stuff need to be careful as you attempt to jump across the gap of normal vocal growth.

All right I didn't feel like reading all of those pages, so an answer to a simple question is appreciated greatly: Does screaming hurt your larnyx? I know there's a proper way to do it, but it doesn't seem healthy.

I can sing from my diaphragm and sing really loudly using my diaphragm but I won't even attempt to get it raspy. Well, is it healthy?

Hey merk, I got another question.

How can I increase my high pitch scream longevity? After I have warmed up the first thing I always want to do is scream some high pitched songs, which sound great the first few minutes but after awhile I lose my high pitch and my screams are much more lower. They start to sound like loud yells but with more rasp [but it's not coming from my chest, it's coming from above my adams apple] I don't change the way I scream the high pitch just loses it's sound. I could get back into it if I wanted to but I always have to put harder to get it to sound and when I end up pushing that hard I'm always short of breath in seconRAB and I always walk away with a huge headache.

I don't mind screaming the non-high pitch way, I just don't think it sounRAB as good. I think once I get my amp it will add more rasp and it will sound better, but I'm afraid this is very noticable. [Going from high pitch and then my voice drops lower right in the middle of a song.] How can I keep my high pitch longevity?

Thanks.
