The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

my throat basically feels swollen, it hurts when i swallow, and it doesn't feel clear like i need to cough something up. Right now i barely talk, but when i do it is very soft and quiet, though i know i could be loud if i want. you think it is going to affect my vocals?

Well I cant tell ya what head voice feels like except that its true voice...its lighter, naturally...and has a ring to it from the resonance of the higher pitches. There is a buzz in true voice from the corRAB and the full vibration of them opening and closing in the wave pattern, as opposed to a falsetto, which is open and more or less cutting the air like a knife. As I said, sometimes you cant really tell. It would be better if you did a gliss. Start at a lower note and rise straight up to your ceiling in one continuous slide. Then on a seperate breath, start at your ceiling and slide down. You want to be able to do it smoothly with no interruptions whatsoever. If you have any, youre not transitioning well and there are some tension based technique issues. There will have to be a release, you cant just go up or down over the registers without having to adjust your cord's position. You should feel for this.

And I guess you never saw my Metaphysics, etc thread in the pit before it got accidentally erased last week by a mod when he accidentally erased the whole freaking front page of the pit's forum. I'm very spiritual, and do Merkaba Everyday.

man i talk really quiet and my voice is strong as fuck..... well maybe not as fuck but it's strong. so i dont think the volume of your normal speaking voice determines how strong your voice is.

Make sure your breathing is set up good. That you are shaping your vowels right, that your keeping your soft palette up and your mouth open as much as possible while keeping the vowel right.

Download/buy some singing courses in tone. Tone lessons have to be from a teacher thats with you, or if you can get a dvd on it, it will help. Or search google.

Me and a friend are trying to start singing, but we are having trouble figuring out how to sing from the "gut", or diaphragm instead of the throat. So, how do we sing from the "gut", and how will we know when we are doing it right?
Also, will singing from the gut make it easier to control pitch, and will it extend range any, compared to singing from the throat (which we know is not proper) Thanks.

EDIT: Also, my friend wants to know if there is any specific way to do Nile/Necrophagist vocals.

I dont have the time to get personal....its nothing personal. I just do have enough time to make it in here. Most people post a short clip on soundclick or Yousendit. I prefer those two. And I'm on dialup. If you do, post a sample of you plain voice singing as well. Screaming is a matter of throat positioning, not cord positioning. The corRAB will only open or close. Thats it. You can either help them or hinder them do that...but thats about it.

Hey guys, I have a problem.

Last sunday was the warped tour, so I was able to sing along with my favorite banRAB (Coheed and Circa Survive). However, when cheering them on, I'd do the high pitch scream "Hell Yeah!"

Now, I'm sure I learned my lesson but my voice can no longer sustain notes between my chest and head voice. Also, my vocal chorRAB hurt for like 3 days after and now I'm noticing my voice is feeling a bit more strained. I can hit the higher notes but as I've mentioned, sustaining them is much harder now and my feels as if it got deeper but not much. It's just that the mixed register seems to be harder to access and my voice my squeek/crack in the first attempt. I'm 18 1/2 years old and my family's genes make sure we're done by the age of 17.

Ive read most of the vioce help hotline but im having trouble getting my head around alot of it. Im finding it hard to tell if i am singing from my gut or if im just pushing out my stomach alot. Also with rasp, am i i suppost to position my throat or keep it still.

Frank Sinatra?:smoke: He sings up to a Ab4.
John Mayer?
Jack Johnson?
Ray Charles?

I don't exactly know what your highest note is. How many notes can you hit from middle C (C4)?

hmm okay. I can pretty much scream by using the same amount of air as i talk (maybe a little bit more.), but my voice feels a little bit deeper today. Sorda like I have a cold. May just be post nasal drip, but im thinking its from screaming lamb of god styled stuff. Is this normal for your voice to change a little bit, especially since I just started. Could it be just from the extra air?

lol while im singing, i hear my voice in my own head and it sounRAB high to me. but when i listen back again it sounRAB like that!

I can't seem to do loud inhales, maybe I'm doing it wrong :(

Also, I'm still having the trouble of finding my head voice... I remember singing a couple of pretty high notes before, migh have been C6 or below, without any strain and the notes were loud. Was that head or falsetto? If I could do it again I would post a recording...

Ah, maybe I shouldn't worry. I will get a response today if it's possible for me to switch to a school where I can focus on music. So there I will probably get some singing lessons. They have one on one lessons there with instrument or/and singing. So I'm kind crossing my fingers right now :)

Hi,

I have a question about head voice. When I go into head voice i feel a lot of resonance around my nose area. The problem with this is it is giving me a very nasal sound. So I trying to lower my larynx more to give a deeper sound. But sometimes this just becomes deep and nasaly or i drop out of head voice sometimes.
Any input?

Thanks

is there anyway to keep your voice from cracking? i think i could sing 10x better if i could sing without cracking when i switch from higher to lower keys.

Most of my advice is to practice singing cleanly, like opera style and that if you can't sing it you cant scream it. I've said that countless numbers of time and repeated how Its all the same. If you cant walk you cant run. But the technique is all the same really. Getting proper air support behind the corRAB and knowing if you should be in head voice or chest is all there is left.

And a drawing I dont think will help much because its hard to visualize the airflow, and I doubt if anyone on this board actually really knows the setup. Just sing the wrong answer buzzer sound at different pitches. If you start to lose the rasp, go back to singing that pitch cleanly until you can isolate the corRAB enough to keep them in vibration while adding the rasp slowly.
