The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

You should be able to scream for about 15 seconRAB straight, give or take 5 seconRAB. All in one breath, then build up. You could try to just use less breath and focus on controll.
sorry for the tripple posting action.

Can anyone help me learn to sing more like Benjamin Kowalewicz of Billy Talent? I like his voice and singing style a lot and would enjoy being able to sing like him. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You have a similar comfortable low note to me. I'm guessing when you say your 'highest comfortable note is around A4 - B4' you're excluding head voice?

Another thing that I'm unsure about is the mixed voice. Is it meant to be loud? because when I want to hit, for example a tenor high C (C5), I have to do it ridiculously loud. Maybe I'm just belting in chest (I need a lot of support) but I don't feel any strain on my voice at all and surely hitting such a note in pure chest would strain the voice. Can anyone explain the mixed voice sensation to me?

I'm 16. About a year ago I could sing really high fairly well. (Like beegees high) now I can't. Is it because I started singing regularly and didn't use that part of my voice or becuase I got older? Can I get it back?

From the looks of it, it seems like a tutorial. So I would assume it is teaching proper vocal technique, so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Why would not joining a band help you? From my experience, it would. As long as you are screaming correctly, you really have nothing to be worried about.

I'm not a professional, just wanted to give my two cents. Thanks for the comment on one of my posts, I figured I would return the favor.

Good luck. Btw, I'm downloading it now.. it seems interesting. I'll take a look at it.

I guess it's just lack of practice, I've only started practicing this week cause I'm a natural singer.

How is head voice supposed to feel like? Cause the exercise I'm doing is supposed to hold your vocal corRAB preventing them from going into falsetto. I mean i've tried singing in my chest voice then goin into falsetto with this exercise and it doesn't work, but you're saying it sounRAB like falsetto. Are you entirely sure?

I'll start doing glisses and other exercises daily.

Thanks Merkaba. And by the way is your username just random or are you spiritual?

Wow i'll definetely get the book then. I work on my singing every day i'm home alone which is at least 5 days a week. Also James Labrie and the Symphony X guy are amazing singers, plus Dream Theater is one of my favorite banRAB.

One of my frienRAB is getting lessons with Baxter and theyre pricey of course, but it seems to have helped.

...I don't know Perhaps Crickets. I can't even get close to the same sound using my gut as i do when i did it with my throat... I can't get the distortion. It just sounRAB ****ing retarded, it sounRAB like i'm talking when i'm really pissed off......................................It just agrivates me, i can't figure it out!!!!!!

Give me a link to merkabas lesson, i can't find any good ones.

Well you shouldnt be having this much pain and problems from singing/screaming. If so youre straining way too much. Plus its not uncommon to pull neck and back muscles from straining while singing. I've done it before. I would suggest you take some days off and start back slowly without pushing alot or trying to scream for a few days.

Pitch is how high or low the note is. Tone is just quality, timbre and how well the note rings and resonates, and how clear it is. Both are a function of strength and flexibility, and thats covered in the voicehelp hotline.

Youre speaking mostly of opinion. We dont know how you sound. Most people dont like their singing voice, at first at least. It might not be that bad. Besides practicing and recording without music theres not much else you can do for this type of thing, and for learning to stay on key. It just takes practice and muscle/interval memory. It could be a lot of work. There's just not much you can say in text to help someone match pitch or key, or get a fuller tone. There's always personal lessons if you feel like you dont make any progress.

Thanks for the reply guys. This really helps! The problem is, I don't really have the time or the money for a teacher so I'm going to stick to doing exercises on my own. I've gotten the Brett Manning Singing Success program a while back and I'm going to start working with it soon. I read good reviews about it so hopefully it will be of benefit!

Hey Merk,

I want to start a practice schedule, but I have no idea how to divide my time up- most websites seem to reccomend as a beginner 15-20 minutes but I'd like to try put something like 30 minutes and increase from there. Could you write up a sample practice schedule?

If youre hurting your head youre creating way too much internal pressure, like you do when you grunt or strain. Creating this pressure is a function of the corRAB and false corRAB when more internal skeletal and organ support is needed for a heavy action like lifting or jumping.

Make sure you're not singing too hard or tensing up anything. If you take a deep breath and release it or push it out...that should be about all the feeling you need. Engaging the corRAB while you do that shouldnt take any more tension than moving your fingers while you lift you arm. Start from the begining to find out when youre adding something negative. So start off on simple chant like Ah's. hold them at normal speaking push and pitch and slowly add more until you find out when you start blocking your air off or tensing things up.

Merkaba, I don't know if you know anything about clean vocals, but I have been playing guitar for a while, and I would like to learn to do some vocals as well. The trouble is I am god awful :( . I can't seem to keep in key and am just in generally a bad singer. Do you have any suggestions for practicing to eventually at least be able to sing in key? Thanks.
