The**OFFICIAL**Voice/Singing Help Thread

Here's just a small concern, Is it normal to have a really weak voice in the morning, then later it becomes strong? Or do I have a vocal node or something.

And Merkaba, how do you warm down? Ive heard of warm ups and what to do, but warming down just completely flew over my book of knowledge.

DUDE, Jaime Vendera is the guy who can shatter a glass with his voice. I might be going to Mark Baxter this summer.
Is Jaime's dvd/book or w/e it is a good buy? What kinRAB of things do they go over?

Heya...

I just started vocal lessons (from a cd) and I have a question in mind. I was doing some exercises last night and I noticed that my voice breaks at the top of my chest voice - start of head voice area but then continues at the top of my head voice. So I can sing high tenor but not low tenor? Is that even normal?

Here's a link to my high tenor notes on an exercise:

I'm sure this is not falsetto, cause it doesn't feel like it at all. So my question is, can your voice break then connect somewhere higher?

Thanks

i have a problem staying on key without music.
i could sing sex pistols/iggy pop/janis joplin/even jello biafra/ voices like that, but when i try to sing normally (especially depeche mode i noticed) i can't seem to get on key.
i also have a really horrible sounding singing voice. i can change it though (to sound kind of like sex pistols/iggy pop/janis joplin) but when i try to sing regular, it sounRAB stupid. not even bad, just stupid. i have this weird low kid sounding voice going on. :upset:

Go back in time and become James Hetfield.
Really...what would you expect someone to say? He just uses a typical raspy voice, and seldom uses falsetto. Other than that, its just his makeup.

If youre that bad why are you the singer for a band?
When you say range from G to C....what G to what C?
If your vocals are higher or lower than the music, then youre just off key which can come from being too tense and squeezing your throat up and down as you try to go up and down in pitch, which is a no-no. Many times smaller people have lighter and higher voices. So you should be sure that youre relaxing and using your own voice and not trying to sing like anyone else, at least until you know how to use your own voice. Not that you are....but that is a very common problem.
If you need to use a lozenge then youre singing incorrectly of course...and that lozenge is only a temporary fix. Be sure that youre not trying to sing too hard. And no diaphragm size doesnt matter at all.
Read my Voicehelp Hotline if you havent.

First off, you haven't got nodes so don't worry about it. When I first started I thought I had them everytime my voice would sound a little rough or hurt a little bit, but by now ive realized how hard it really is to do that kind of damage, and it would be a long road leading up to actually developing a node; your voice would be messed up at all times, you'd slowly start losing the middle part of your voice and your falsetto, etc. So dont worry about it.

SounRAB like your drinking plenty of water so thats no issue. Heres the thing; you may be doing a warm up and you may be doing it with 100% perfect technique, but you still could be straining your voice. Since you've been going at it without any real resting, I think your just overworking your vocal muscles.

The discovery of your mix/middle voice could very well be that you found the coordination, but it could also be that your corRAB starting to get a little strained and swollen and you were able to produce that sound. It sounRAB weird, but the day or 2 before your voice gives out on you from pushing it too much will be when you sound your best...everything will sound amazing and you'll be able to sing up higher in a fuller tone than ever before.

The reason why is the swelling. Your corRAB get to a point where you can push them and thanks to the swelling, you'll be able to take chest ( or what you might had thought was middle ) up higher than ever before. This can go on for a day or two, and then your voice just kind of dies on you. After this, your voice will be deepened due to all the swelling, and you wont have access to any head voice notes, and if you still have a falsetto it will be breathy as hell.

So, heres the only way I can determine if you really found middle or not without hearing an audio file. You were able to sing in your mid and high mid range in a full voice tone; how was your falsetto? Were you singing notes usually only usable in a loud falsetto tone in a full voice? Was your falsetto more breathy or harder to bring up than normal? What about your lower chest notes...was anything different about them?

Either way, its overuse, so take a few days off from singing songs...keep doing light warm ups for 15 minutes a day until everything feels normal. if you truly discovered middle as opposed to just pushing on swollen beat up corRAB, try to get that feeling back and use less breath pressure to produce it.

My first post.....
MMMmmm?
I joined cause I just finished reading alot of Merkabas posts.
Great Stuff, thanks!

Now my question, which I dont think has been talked about?

Im a 35yr old dude with a 2 1/2+ octave range, and can nail any song by Journey/Steve Perry..... Like Steve Perry my voice is pure without much overdrive.
But I of course dont wish to be a Steve Perry clone.
When performing any other artists songs that has anykind of rasp involved.
I end up burning out my throat early, and cant hit my higher register notes performing (what should be easy for me) Journey tunes for the rest of the night.

Ive been trying to narrow down the culprit to my problem.
My breathing technique I believe is good.
But it seems my Larynx is rising way too high when I go for higher register notes.
And Ive been trying all kinRAB of things to train it to stay in a lower, or more neutral position.

Any new ideas would be greatly appreciated.

FYI, Im currently reading all Merkabas posts on how implement rasp into the voice without damage.......I'll post my progress when i make some.

Yeah he sounRAB good... I know how to do it, but can't explain it since I have no experience whatsoever in teaching people vocals. But yeah, you should provide a song for an example....or a particular verse from a song and I'll try my best to help you out..

Gah, k, I'm a noob, go easy.

Yeah, been using screaming vocals for only a couple of weeks (using a 'sighing' technique) and have practiced almost everyday. And have been able to do some pretty low growls. Except last couple of days I haven't been able to practice, and now when I try to today my scream is very weak and I can't hit any deep growls. And I'm just tiring out. Which is really starting to piss me off. When before I could do it for over an hour without being any bit tired and hit them low. Problem probably lies with being properly warmed up.. but I can't seem to get it going at all. >.< Anyone know any good (or ****ing awesome..) ways to warm up the vox? Or links to exercises? That or could it have something to do with me used to using **** at the back of the throat to push those deep growls out? And now I have a lack of? :p (Going for a Johnny Truant style growl btw.)

I don't know. Practice?
Well, voice lessons suck so lets take that option off.
If you play the piano or know how to read sheet music, you'll probably be a better singer.
So all I can say now is Practice.

uhm yeah

so when I sing with harsh vocals I notice that my voice is very low

when I'm mixing for studio purposes, am I supposed to mix it higher than instruments to achieve a nice envolving sound?

and

when I do it live, should I crank up the mics when doing harsh vocals, or vocals in general? (At least 1.5 times the dB of instruments)

right?

Practice in terms with chord isolation. again back to merks guide ITF/ITT

scale. kinda as a siren hitting each note. low to high high to low

Once you get the proper tech down, you'll stop thinking about what you're doing. that's part of the problem. the more you think about anything. the more you **** it up. same with guitar

Find your own range/voice.
